The Venice Film Festival is happening right now, and that means that many of the best and brightest people in the universe have something to say.
George Clooney was there talking about how we&#8217;re experiencing difficult times in the United States. He said:
<blockquote>We&#8217;ve had some other difficult times, but this is one of them. There&#8217;s a great word, kakistocracy, which is a country run by the least qualified people. I think maybe we have a kakistocracy right now, but we&#8217;ll get through it, and we will have an election in November that should be a check and balance. And then in 2028, with any luck, we&#8217;ll have some restoration.</blockquote>
He says that American politics is a joke, but don&#8217;t worry, we&#8217;ll get through it.
Thank you, George Clooney. I was truly worried. I need your guidance. I need George Clooney, who&#8217;s very, very wealthy, to tell me that it&#8217;s actually the rich people who are somehow betraying us.
I&#8217;m always bewildered by this particular argument, because most of the people I know who are rich were not rich at some point in their lives, and they&#8217;ve been the same people the whole time.

This is the kind of class-based distinction people want to make in America, but it really applies more to old Europe.
There was a time when I made a lot less money. I&#8217;m the same person; nothing changed. I just have more money now.
But to George Clooney, people with the most money are the ones who are telling us to fear one another.
This is so tiresome. You are a man with tons of money telling us we need to fear one another. Do you own a mirror? You&#8217;re very rich. You can afford a mirror.
“We&#8217;re living through a moment in time where people in charge of the people with the most money are telling us to fear one another, fear one another,” he declared. “But we know better than that, don&#8217;t we? Because history does teach us a lesson. It teaches us something. The first people that authoritarians try to shut down are not politicians. They&#8217;re journalists who ask questions. They&#8217;re the artists who refuse simple answers that the filmmakers, writers, actors and musicians &#8230;”
Oh, it&#8217;s the artists who bring us together. That&#8217;s who brings us together, with films that label half the American population horrible and film festivals that refuse to acknowledge the existence of other worldviews.
Ryan Reynolds is getting overtly political because he happens to be in Venice. He said:
<blockquote>What&#8217;s interesting about when you get far enough away from a time period that&#8217;s quite distinct, I think there&#8217;s always a lovely feeling associated with it. It&#8217;s almost like you pave over all the trauma with, like, puppy dogs and ice cream. And the &#8217;80s was a brutal, brutal time for people. It was a f*cking mess. And like, you know, people forget that that was like that was a tremendous strife, socio-political tensions everywhere. 
You know, we&#8217;re still like, pretty fresh off, like a Cuban missile crisis, which is only like, what, 15, 20 years before. So, you know, it&#8217;s a tumultuous period. But you look back at it now and you&#8217;re like, “Oh yeah, Top Gun cocaine.” Like. No, it was like really scary.</blockquote>
The 1980s? You don&#8217;t remember them properly. Sure, the 1980s were great, but you just don’t remember. Ryan Reynolds remembers it really well, and he&#8217;ll tell you all about it.
Maggie Gyllenhaal, who is on the board of the Venice Film Festival, said one of the great tragedies of filmmaking right now is that it&#8217;s very hard for women to get their films financed.
Let&#8217;s be abundantly clear. It is very difficult for anyone to get a film financed because film is expensive.
May we point out that Maggie Gyllenhaal has had films financed that are some of the worst films in human history? What was Maggie Gyllenhaal’s latest film?
Hmmm&#8230; Her last film, &#8220;The Bride,&#8221; is one of the worst movies ever made. Ever.
It had a huge cast with Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley and a budget of $80-$90 million.
It made $24 million at the box office.
Lady, I&#8217;m pretty sure if it&#8217;s hard for you to get financed, it&#8217;s because you financed a project to the tune of $80-$90 million that made $24 million at the box office.
That budget is just for the film. That does not include what&#8217;s called P&amp;A, meaning the print and advertising campaign, which is usually as much as the budget. So that movie probably cost at least $150 million and made $24 million at the box office.
And then she&#8217;s asking, “Why won&#8217;t anyone fund me?”
I don&#8217;t know, but perhaps it’s because somebody could find a better way to flush $120 million down the toilet.
Speaking of women who complain about not getting role offers, Elliot Page is now complaining, which I think is contradictory. Elliot Page, a woman cosplaying as a man, says “he” has not received any role offers since &#8220;The Odyssey.&#8221;
There&#8217;s a reason for that. Page was not very good in &#8220;The Odyssey.&#8221; Elliot Page was supposed to be playing a young man who dies in a war, and it didn&#8217;t work because Elliot Page looks like a 110-pound woman.
I have been informed that it&#8217;s very hard for women to get jobs. But Hollywood has told me that Elliot Page is a man.
I don&#8217;t get it. Where&#8217;s the sexism working in favor of Elliot Page? Where is it? I&#8217;m confused.

Transgender-identifying actress Elliot Page says it has become &#8220;a little tricky&#8221; to get cast now that Hollywood sees her differently as she seeks work as a white man.  
Page discussed her career during an appearance on the &#8220;On Film&#8230; With Kevin McCarthy&#8221; podcast after playing the male Greek soldier Sinon in Christopher Nolan&#8217;s blockbuster &#8220;The Odyssey,&#8221; which was released in July. 
McCarthy suggested Page must have &#8220;a zillion calls&#8221; coming in following the film&#8217;s success.
“No, Kevin, I’m not,” Page responded. “So, let’s — if someone wants to call me …”
McCarthy sounded surprised and asked Page to confirm she really didn&#8217;t have another job lined up. 
“Not really,” Page replied. “I’d really love to do, ideally, good work. That’s what I’d love to do.”
The actress said she wasn’t “comfortable” while working on “Inception,” but that’s all different now, since she’s moved on to demanding that everyone call her a man.
“I was seen in a certain way before and it is different now,” she added. Page jokingly said, “I think that’s probably for pretty obvious reasons.”
Page then jokingly blamed her difficulties on &#8220;the Canadian thing.&#8221;
The comments on the clip were predictably brutal, and accurate.
“Let’s give Elliot the benefit of accepting his premise at face value. Cool. Elliot is a 5’1’’ slender male with an unattractive face and no special skills like comedy or martial arts,” one commenter <a href="https://x.com/failed_testing/status/2095223674206830887">wrote</a>. “The number of men with that description who get roles in Hollywood is zero. Elliot is getting precisely what any man would, and isn’t that the goal?”
“Already a mediocre actress, now a twink manlet who looks creepy as hell, yeah I wonder why it ain&#8217;t raining contracts,” another person <a href="https://x.com/ElonBuyRedditz/status/2095502113442775479">agreed</a>.
“Ellen is just going to have to deal with the fact that despite her elaborate costume, she is cross-dressing as a tiny, effeminate male and there’s just not any parts for that unless it’s somebody’s sidekick,” <a href="https://x.com/C130GuyBNA/status/2095161207997038896">echoed</a> a third. “She might take some of Kevin Hart’s parts and be the tiny cohort of the Rock… but she doesn’t have a sense of humor like he does.”
“She chose to type cast herself and she’s not a believable romantic lead, heroic figure, or even male. She looks exactly like what she is – a woman who enjoys dressing like a man.”
Page announced to the world in December 2020 that she identified as transgender, about six years after coming out as gay. In a March 2021 issue of Time magazine, Page discussed undergoing top surgery and said she was excited to continue acting while living as a man.

It’s no secret that conservatives are the David to Hollywood’s Goliath on the pop culture front.
Much of that isn’t their fault. The Heartland is mostly shut out of Hollywood, Inc. Conservative stories rarely get a close-up on screens of any size. The list of openly conservative stars remains microscopically small.
Yet conservatives may have hurt their own cause by going to war with “The Odyssey,” mostly sight unseen.
Director Christopher Nolan’s take on Homer’s epic poem drew endless online attacks from both Right-leaning YouTube creators and conservatives. It’s woke! It’s D.E.I. gone wild! The source material’s translator is a <a href="https://www.slashfilm.com/2219268/how-emily-wilson-feels-christopher-nolan-the-odyssey-adaptation/">woke feminist</a>!
A woke feminist, for what it’s worth, who had some unkind things to say about Nolan’s finished product.
Now, with the film generating rapturous responses from <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_odyssey_2026">film critics</a> and <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/movies/articles/odyssey-audience-cinemascore-even-beyond-031733557.html">audiences alike</a>, that knee-jerk response is looking worse. The film earned a whopping <a href="https://variety.com/2026/film/box-office/the-odyssey-box-office-christopher-nolan-opening-weekend-shatters-expectations-1236815861/">$264 million globally</a> in its opening weekend, and the subsequent numbers show little sign that it’s a one-weekend wonder.
Nolan isn’t your average Hollywood storyteller. He never weighs in on politics directly, lets his art speak for him, and once made a blockbuster that side-eyed the Occupy Wall Street movement – “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012).
He spent an entire Oscar campaign for 2023’s “Oppenheimer” without shouting “Free Palestine” or attacking a certain U.S. president. He’s also not a social media diva. He reportedly doesn’t own a smartphone and has his assistants <a href="https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/a/jaelaniturnerwilliams/christopher-nolan-no-smartphone-email">print out emails for him</a>. (Maybe we can all agreed that’s a bit much.)
That should have earned him some respect on the Right, the sense that this wasn’t your average Hollywood progressive weaponizing a classic against Red State USA.
No.
Social media allowed some Right-leaning souls to predict the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldGE53GwLlc">film’s financial doom</a> and slam the film sight unseen. Even Elon Musk entered the chat, pummeling the film for weeks prior to its release.
On one key front, the Right had a point.
Nolan cast trans actor Elliot Page in “The Odyssey,” but he and his team refused to explain what role Page played. That sparked rumors that the part was Achilles, known to all as a fearsome warrior.
Page is five-foot-one and slender.
No matter. That Fake News story ricocheted around the web, desperate for a fact check that took too long to arrive. It’s notable that Nolan didn’t immediately debunk the misinformation, nor did his marketing team.
The latter likely possess smartphones.
Casting Page deserved some raised eyebrows. The actor is intensely political, before and after the transition. Page’s on-screen appearance is a distraction, no matter where you stand on so-called “representation” and trans rights. Period. Good filmmakers should understand that, but like even the very best storytellers in Hollywood, Nolan isn’t perfect.
Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o co-stars as Helen of Troy, a character described as fair-skinned in the text and played by white actors in previous takes on the source material. It’s a race swap! Yes, yes, it is, but it’s a very minor point in a much larger story.
Some savaged the star for not being beautiful enough for the role, a characterization that is both subjective and silly. Plus, Nyong’o has little screen time.
Nolan spoke repeatedly of his attempt to “modernize” the epic tale for modern audiences. Nyong’o’s casting may have been part of that effort. Some other minor “Greek” roles also clashed with the time period. Was Nolan pulling a minor “Hamilton” move, where casting choices took a creative turn to say something about the culture at large?
Right-leaning podcaster Bridget Phetasy leveled the cruelest dig at the film’s conservative critics. She called their <a href="https://www.phetasy.com/p/walk-ins-welcome-400?utm_source=podcast-email&amp;publication_id=348276&amp;post_id=208139218&amp;utm_campaign=email-play-on-substack&amp;utm_content=watch_now_gif&amp;r=2rv17&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email">attacks “liberal” in nature</a>:

You had a criticism of making everything political for a decade, and now you haven’t seen the movie and you’re making it political and telling people not to go enjoy a good movie.
</blockquote>
That’s not to say some conservative arguments weren’t solid or leaned on little more than tired talking points to fit their agenda. The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh skewered “The Odyssey” while bringing up salient arguments about the casting, the impact of Page’s character and more.
He actually saw the film and gave his two cents thereafter. Agree? Disagree? He stated his case well.
Andrew Klavan mostly praised the film but found the screenplay wanting, to put it mildly.
The Critical Drinker, who isn’t overtly conservative but leans to the cultural Right, served up a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_W0z6hZlrI">nuanced take</a> that mixed criticism with praise.
Conservatives should take great care in “jumping the gun” on pop culture matters. In a way, that’s what the Left often does. Consider the L.A. Times’ <a href="https://www.hollywoodintoto.com/la-times-daily-wire-run-hide-fight-racist/">recent assault on “Run Hide Fight: Infidels,”</a> a movie that doesn’t hit Daily Wire+ until the Fall.
The newspaper read a generic synopsis of the film, set on a college campus where Islamic radicals take charge, and declared the film deeply problematic. The film could inspire violence, the paper argued, while implying it should be censored.
The worst part of this ugly culture war battle? The anger and absolutism behind the critiques. “The Odyssey” is just a movie, albeit a massive one with cultural heft. We can love or loathe it, find it inspiring or wanting.
Walsh is right, to a degree. So is The Critical Drinker and the Left-leaning mainstream critics who adored “The Odyssey.”
Conservatives should still engage in the culture wars, create art on their own terms (when feasible) and not cede Hollywood to the modern Left. The latter would be disastrous.
They also should hold their fire until they see the art in question and bring vital context to their culture war crusades. The Right is working at a distinct disadvantage here. They shouldn’t make matters worse.

After criticizing Christopher Nolan&#8217;s &#8220;The Odyssey&#8221; over its casting choices, billionaire Tesla founder Elon Musk said he would be willing to bankroll an alternative adaptation of Homer&#8217;s epic. 
Musk, who previously <a href="https://deadline.com/2026/05/elon-musk-the-odyssey-christopher-nolan-cast-lupita-nyongo-helen-1236901704/">blasted</a> Nolan for &#8220;race-swapping&#8221; characters and suggested he was chasing awards with casting decisions, said he would be willing to pony up $100 million to produce an alternative adaptation directed by Mel Gibson.
It&#8217;s unclear whether Musk was serious, but the idea quickly gained traction after an X user suggested he bankroll Gibson&#8217;s version of Homer&#8217;s classic.
“I want Elon Musk to give Mel Gibson $100 million to film an Odyssey adaptation with painstakingly historically accurate ships, armour, weapons, and casting, with all dialogue taken straight from the original poem and delivered in Homeric Greek,” the user <a href="https://x.com/martianwyrdlord/status/2079640327170728085">wrote</a> on Tuesday. 
“I’m down,” Musk replied.
The original poster was blown away by the response, and even if nothing comes of it, there are already alternative “Odyssey” projects in the works. 
Later Tuesday, Musk posted that his artificial intelligence (AI) platform, Grok, would take a stab at it.
“Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,” Musk wrote, sharing a clip of a dialogue scene posted by another X user.

The idea of competing adaptations has already begun taking shape. Days before Nolan’s blockbuster debuted, content generator Ash Koosha announced plans to release an AI-generated version of &#8220;The Odyssey&#8221; later this year.
Koosha is best known for debuting another AI-generated feature, “Dreams of Violets,” at this year&#8217;s Tribeca Film Festival.
“We very much hope that Christopher Nolan’s film, The Odyssey, is a raging success at the box office, and in some way that our version of the journey of Odysseus might further that success by bringing to theaters those who might not otherwise come out to see the film, simply because they are curious to see the ultimate in human creation and compare it to one man’s collaboration with AI,” Koosha <a href="https://www.euronews.com/culture/2026/07/15/ai-slop-version-of-the-odyssey-announced-prior-to-release-of-christopher-nolans-epic-block">said</a> of his version.
Meanwhile, “The Odyssey” has become the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/conservatives-had-concerns-about-the-odyssey-now-theyre-praising-it">biggest box-office opening of Nolan’s career</a>. 
While some conservatives initially criticized aspects of the casting before the film&#8217;s release, many have praised it despite those reservations. Others, however, continue to object to several casting choices, including the decision to cast Elliot Page, a transgender-identifying woman, as a male soldier.

As fans speculate about casting decisions for Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated summer blockbuster, “The Odyssey,” the Academy Award-winning director is keeping details under wraps other than to say it’s going to be comparable to a Marvel franchise.
Nolan appeared on Monday night’s episode of “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert to discuss some aspects of the project. He said the poet Homer, who is credited with writing “The Odyssey,” created the basis upon which all superhero films are built.
“Even comic book culture, whether you’re talking about Marvel or DC or all the rest, a lot of it comes directly from the Homeric Epics,” the director said. “The thing about Homer is, nobody knows if that was a person. Homer, in a way, is the sort of George Lucas of his time.”
He said later, “The thing about Homer, it is the Marvel of its day. It’s very directly this desire for us to feel or believe gods could walk amongst us, and I think the modern comic book is kind of our expression of that.”
Nolan also had rave reviews for Tom Holland, who plays Odysseus’ son Telemachus, calling him an “incredible talent.”

The “Oppenheimer” director is considered one of the best in the business, but fans are skeptical of a few controversial casting options. Elliot Page, a woman who identifies as a man, is in the cast and is rumored to be playing the Olympian messenger god Hermes. That role has not been confirmed, however.
Another potential casting choice causing an uproar is Lupita Nyong&#8217;o as Helen of Troy. Helen, also known as &#8220;the face that launched a thousand ships,&#8221; was traditionally blonde and considered the most beautiful woman in the world at the time. Critics are saying the decision to cast Nyong’o in that role is a mistake, but it’s only a rumor that she’ll be playing that part. 
Matt Damon portrays Odysseus, King of Ithaca, while Robert Pattinson stars as Antinous. Anne Hathaway was cast as Odysseus’ wife Penelope.
Nolan <a href="https://apnews.com/article/summer-movie-preview-2026-b09b6e9cd8c679a07b95ce5cc7512a74">told</a> the Associated Press last week that he felt a “massive amount of pressure” to adapt the story and said that he “really tried to make the best film possible.”
“Anyone taking on ‘The Odyssey’ is taking on the hopes and dreams of people for epic movies everywhere and that comes with a huge responsibility,” he told the outlet. “What I learned from [making ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy] is that what people want from a movie about a beloved story, a beloved set of characters, is they want a strong and sincere interpretation. They want to know that a filmmaker has gone to the mat for it.”
The saga hits theaters on July 17, 2026.

&#8220;<a href="https://twitter.com/TheView/status/1666482934277128192?s=20">The View</a>&#8221; co-host made the comments on Wednesday&#8217;s broadcast while speaking to Elliot Page — the actor formerly known as Ellen Page who now identifies as a man — about the star&#8217;s new memoir titled, &#8220;Pageboy.&#8221;
The two discussed GOP-led bills passed across the country to stop minors from undergoing irreversible surgeries under the guise of &#8220;gender-affirming care.&#8221;

Behar then asked Page about Republicans she claimed &#8220;are continuing to introduce hundreds of anti-trans bills&#8221; that will ban so-called &#8220;gender-affirming health care for transgender youth.&#8221;
&#8220;Why do you think the transgender community is being attacked like this?&#8221; Behar asked. &#8220;What is that about? I mean it&#8217;s not like they&#8217;re 80% of the population.&#8221;

In a memoir released Tuesday, titled &#8220;<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Pageboy-Memoir-Elliot-Page/dp/1250878357?tag=nypost-20&amp;asc_refurl=https://nypost.com/2023/06/06/elliot-page-reveals-chilling-transphobic-attack-outside-la-hotel/&amp;asc_source=web" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pageboy</a>,&#8221; the 36-year-old actor alleged that in 2022, when the star was in L.A. (on Sunset and La Cienaga), a man allegedly &#8220;threatened to assault&#8221; the &#8220;Umbrella Academy&#8221; actor, according to the <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2023-06-04/for-real-elliot-page-survival-pageboy-umbrella-academy?fbclid=PAAabljJY_1EyODzdtcVyY1yInSjCyaUnCOw6H9VnaHpXRn_3tEZ_fBtSa5w4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Los Angeles Times</a>.

If someone from 2008 awakened from a coma and immediately decided to look up their favorite actress <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ellen-page">Ellen Page</a>, that person would be left disappointed because she doesn’t exist anymore in places like IMDb and Wikipedia.
The person formerly known as Ellen Page now goes by Elliot Page and is one of Hollywood&#8217;s most prominent <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/transgender">transgender</a> men. Page has only been Elliot since December 1, 2020, but somehow in that short time, has managed to transform the past to suit a new identity.
Daily Wire podcaster Michael Knowles wrote a lengthy <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/knowles-are-the-oscars-guilty-of-deadnaming-a-2008-best-actress-nominee">op-ed</a> exploring the contradictions and confusion surrounding the change. He pointed out how the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences still has the name “Ellen Page” listed under <a href="https://www.oscars.org/oscars/ceremonies/2008">nominees</a> for Best Actress in a Leading Role for 2008, which should lead to the Oscars being canceled and deplatformed like <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jordan-peterson-id-rather-die-than-delete-truthful-tweet-for-cancel-creeps">Jordan Peterson</a>. 
There’s a chance they weren’t because the Academy bowed to Page’s wishes on another page. When searching for “Ellen Page” on <a href="https://oscars.org/">Oscars.org</a>, users encounter “Elliot Page” instead with a short explainer.
“NOTE: Nomination originally submitted under Elliot Page’s prior name. At the request of the nominee, following his December 1, 2020 announcement that he is transgender, his name has been changed accordingly with support of the Academy’s Awards and Events Committee,” it <a href="https://awardsdatabase.oscars.org/search/getresults?query=%7B%22Nominee%22%3A%22Page%22%2C%22Sort%22%3A%221-Nominee-Alpha%22%2C%22AwardShowNumberFrom%22%3A0%2C%22AwardShowNumberTo%22%3A0%2C%22Search%22%3A30%7D">says</a>. 
That’s less confusing than <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0680983/">IMDb</a>, which appears to have erased Page’s former name entirely. The short bio on the Hollywood star doesn’t contain the name “Ellen” at all, even for roles that Page performed under the former name. Page’s acting past has been erased and rewritten, which Knowles compares to the classic dystopian novel “1984.”
Page’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elliot_Page">Wikipedia</a> offers a terse “formerly Ellen Page” by way of description, but uses he/him pronouns and Elliot throughout the rest of the text. 
The practice of “deadnaming” refers to using a person’s previous name, especially for transgender individuals. Knowles points out that Page went by “Ellen” for 33 out of 35 years of life and can’t just erase that history and start over, plus shouldn’t expect the rest of the world to do so. 
Knowles points out the absurdity of the charade, especially if Page decided tomorrow to switch back to using female pronouns and going by Ellen again. After many instances of transgender people detransitioning, which The Daily Wire has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/detransitioners-flood-social-media-with-testimony-photos-the-darkest-time-in-my-life">reported on</a> before, this possibility is not too far-fetched.

Last week, Twitter<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jordan-peterson-id-rather-die-than-delete-truthful-tweet-for-cancel-creeps"> suspended</a> Jordan Peterson for calling a woman by her name. Jordan’s observation that “Ellen Page just had her breasts removed” had apparently violated Twitter’s rules against “misgendering” and “deadnaming,” two neologisms that mean the opposite of what they seem. The verb “to misgender” first appeared in 1989. It ostensibly refers to inaccurately identifying someone’s sex, but ironically it has come to mean accurately identifying the sex of people who wish it were not so. In reality, Jordan did not “misgender” Ellen Page; he simply “gendered” her. The only people “misgendering” the actress are the ones who pretend that she is a man.
The term “deadname,” which first appeared sometime in the early 2010s, follows a similar illogic. It describes a person’s name from birth until the moment in which he declared himself to be a member of the opposite sex or no sex at all and assumed a new name. Today Ellen goes by “Elliot” and has even legally changed her name. But “Ellen” isn’t Miss Page’s “deadname.” Even if one were to accept the dubious premise that men have a right to call themselves “Sally” and ladies a right to call themselves “Hank,” Ellen isn’t dead. She is very much alive and has called herself “Ellen” for 33 of her 35 years. “Ellen Page” starred in Jason Reitman’s hit film Juno, for which “Ellen Page” received an Oscar<a href="https://www.oscars.org/oscars/ceremonies/2008"> nomination</a> for Best Actress. Must Reitman recut his movie credits now that Ellen fancies herself “Elliot”? Must the Academy rescind Ellen’s nomination for Best Actress and retroactively nominate her for Best Actor? The Academy continues to list &#8220;Ellen Page&#8221; among its past nominees. Does Hollywood&#8217;s most prestigious body condone &#8220;deadnaming&#8221;?

The prevailing transgender consensus contends that Ellen has always in some way been Elliot. According to Wikipedia, for instance, “Page was born on February 21, 1987… He was assigned female at birth and used his birth name of Ellen prior to transitioning.” In other words, “he” was always a man, albeit a man whom everyone, apparently including herself, believed to be a woman. But Ellen’s supposedly eternal maleness raises new problems of sexual identity. Prior to her “transition,” Ellen entered into a “same-sex marriage” with a woman named Emma Portner. At the time, both ladies considered themselves to be lesbians. Miss Portner still does. But to affirm Page’s “gender identity” is to deny Portner’s “sexual orientation,” and vice versa. If during their relationship Ellen was a man, then Emma was not a lesbian; if Emma was a lesbian, then Ellen was not a man. One cannot simultaneously indulge the sexual ideologies of both women.
And what if someday Ellen once again acknowledges that she is in fact a woman? A growing number of people have<a href="https://www.thepublicdiscourse.com/2015/04/14688/"> regretted</a> their “transitions” and<a href="https://lacroicsz.substack.com/p/by-any-other-name?utm_source=url&amp;s=r"> returned</a> to their proper names and pronouns. Will her Wikipedia page strike virtually all references to “Elliot” and “his” accomplishments, just as it did for “Ellen”? What if Ellen changes her mind again? Does her sexual identity have any basis in objective reality, or does it hinge entirely on her own will? The answers to these questions carry implications beyond abstract theorizing. If a person’s sex has its basis in biological reality, then we can perceive that reality with our intellect and avoid falling afoul of the censors’ rules against “misgendering” in the public square. If a person’s will determines his sex, then one can never know for certain what to call anyone, and the censors might cast any of us at any moment into the social media gulag with Jordan Peterson.
The social media companies themselves are liable to fall afoul of this capricious view of sex, as ironically Twitter did when it de-platformed Jordan. After the censors suspended Jordan for mentioning “Ellen Page,” the forbidden name began to trend, which BuzzFeed<a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/juliareinstein/twitter-elliot-page-deadname-trending"> noted</a> meant that Twitter had immediately violated the very same rule for which it had punished Peterson. Twitter soon apologized and replaced “Ellen” with “Elliot” among the trending terms.
This revision did not represent a bug in the system but rather an essential feature of the transgender ideology. As one transgender scholar<a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/08989575.2019.1542845"> explains</a>, “The matter of ‘the past’ is a complicated one for transsexual and transgender people.” That is because the transgender identity requires the constant rewriting of the past according to one’s present self-definition. “It is only understandable,” the scholar insists, “if a trans person responds by insisting on the primacy of the present, by seeking to erase the past, or even by emotionally locating their ‘real self’ in the future, that elusive place where access (to transition, health care, housing, a livable wage, and so on) and social viability tend to appear more abundant.” If Ellen calls herself Elliot today, then Ellen must always have been Elliot no matter how many film credits mention Ellen. Orwell described the same process in Nineteen-Eighty-Four: “The past was alterable. The past never had been altered. Oceania was at war with Eastasia. Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia.”
This hostility toward the past helps to explain why leftists of sturdier sexuality have rallied around the movement. Statue-topplers want to erase their forebears as completely as gender identity activists hope to erase their past selves, and transgenderism offers to the activists the additional political benefit of justifying their program on the grounds of pure will without reference to reason or reality. Either Ellen Page is Ellen, or none of us can say who she is or ever was — just as our opponents who control the public square want it.

KNOWLES: Are The Oscars Guilty Of Deadnaming A 2008 Best Actress Nominee?

“A few days ago I penned an irritated tweet in response to one of the latest happenings on the increasingly heated culture war front. In response to the decision of an actress — actor — named Ellen – Elliot Page. I am employing this awkward and impossible naming style because it is now apparently mandatory and am probably doing it wrong…I’m trying to make a point,” Peterson began in his reply.
“I’ve essentially been banned from Twitter as a consequence. I say banned although technically, I’ve been suspended. But the suspension will not be lifted unless I delete the ‘hateful’ tweet in question, and I would rather die than do that.”
Next, the Canadian psychologist went over what the tweet said and what he believes the violation may have been, despite Twitter never specifying which part of the rules he violated.

Twitter’s explanation said Peterson violated the rules against “hateful conduct,” an accusation that he vehemently denies.
“I did not promote violence against or threaten anyone,” Peterson said in reply.
He went on to discuss the sin of pride and the problem of Pride month being a celebratory occasion.
“I don’t regard pride as a virtue. It has been classically regarded as a sin,” he said, explaining how celebrating or taking pride in your sexual orientation is unnecessary.
Next, Peterson posited that he was banned for deadnaming the “Juno” alum by calling Elliot “Ellen,” or by using the pronoun “her” when the star had since transitioned to using “he/him.”
“How could those I’m writing to make sense of what I was saying if it was his breasts that were removed? Were those male breasts or female breasts that were removed?” he continued, making the case for calling Page a woman to make his point in the first place.
Finally, Peterson said Page may be an adult capable of making decisions as he/she sees fit, but that as a celebrity, there is some level of responsibility to fans as well.
“Elliot has undoubtedly with his/her/their so-called courage… enticed many a poor, confused adolescent – girl, most likely – to blame her emergent pubescent self-consciousness, confusion, and discomfort on being born in the wrong body and believing that the courageous, self-affirming, and moral admirable route is hormonal treatment, sterilization, subjugation to a lifetime of expensive medical complications, and misery,” Peterson said, before pointing out that transgender surgeries and drugs are part of a $300 million industry that’s growing at a rapid pace.
In conclusion, Peterson insisted he’s not deleting the tweet. “Up yours, woke moralists,” the DailyWire+ contributor said. “I regard [being banned] under the present conditions as a badge of honor.”

A few days ago, I penned an irritated tweet in response to one of the latest happenings on the increasingly heated culture war front in response to the decision of an actress (actor) named <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/elliot-page">Ellen (Elliot) Page</a>. I am employing this awkward and impossible multiple-naming style because it is now apparently mandatory — and probably doing it wrong, nonetheless, as “you’re doing it wrong” is the whole point of what has been made mandatory — but also to make a point.

But the suspension will not be lifted unless I delete the “hateful” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/social-media">tweet</a> in question, and I would rather die than do that. And hopefully it will not come to that, although who the hell knows in these increasingly strange days?

What was it that I said that caused such a fuss? And, even more importantly, and complexly, what exactly was it that I said that resulted in the ban? Here is the tweet in question:

Let’s take this apart. First, it is clearly the case that I did not “promote violence against” or “threaten” anyone with my missive. So that leaves the arguably lesser sin of “harass.” Let’s assume that was the crime, and, further, harassment on the basis of “gender identity.” Since Twitter did not do me the favor of actually specifying my crime, we unfortunately have to guess at why this has occurred — and that’s actually a big problem in and of itself, and also indicative of the utter carelessness of the Twitter organization with regard to the propriety of its own censorial actions. I should at least know exactly what I did wrong if I am required to “acknowledge that” my “Tweet violated the Twitter Rules.”

What rules, you sons of bitches? Exactly? Precisely? Because such things matter when the accusations start flying.
So what did I say that might constitute harassment? Many things, hypothetically. Let’s begin with “Remember when pride was a sin?” Although that is merely a factual statement because under the old rules, applicable even a decade ago, pride was a sin, and had been recognized as perhaps the cardinal sin for thousands of years previously. It still might be regarded as unacceptable to the authoritarian moralists who now insist, for example, that we celebrate Pride Month (not hour or day or week, but month) and who have literally called it PRIDE MONTH instead of LGBT+ Month. I don’t regard PRIDE as a virtue; it has been classically regarded as a sin.
I don’t see sexual orientation or sexual desire of any sort as something to celebrate or to take PRIDE in, and what I said was merely a fact. It’s possible that I hurt someone’s feelings because I pointed out that PRIDE goes before, for example, a fall, but I don’t care about that, would do it again, and also consider it my duty to warn those who are about to fall into a pit that the path they are on leads suddenly down hill. But that was probably NOT the reason that I was banned from Twitter — although, as I said, I am in the position of having to guess.
Next phrase to interrogate: “And Ellen Page…” Now, why did I stop there? Because, in all likelihood, it was this seemingly innocuous phrase, including the name of a well-known actress (there, I’m in trouble again), that likely resulted in my ban. I committed the fatal crime of what has come to be known in the appalling censorial terminology of the insane activists as “dead-naming.” That’s the act of referring to someone who has “transitioned” (another hated piece of jargon and slogan) by the name, and by inference the gender (really “sex”) that everyone knew them by previously — and in the case of Ellen/Elliot, that millions of people recognized and knew. So I should have called him/her/they Elliot instead of Ellen, although, as we will discover, that would have made it impossible for me to say what I wanted to and need to say in the remaining phrases. Not that such a problem would bother those who are objecting to my speech in the first place.
The next phrase is “just had her breasts removed.” This bit suffers from a very similar problem. I employed the forbidden pronoun “her” when Elliot is now to be regarded as a “he,” or else. But there’s a conundrum here, to say the least — and not just for me, although I have been banned because of it. Was Elliot/Ellen a she or a he (or Ellen or Elliot) when she or he or they (that’s Elliot or Ellen, by the way) had his or her or their breasts removed? If he or she was a he, then why was it necessary to have the mastectomy? And how could those I am writing to make sense of what I was saying if it was “his” breasts that were removed? Were those male breasts or female breasts that were removed? If they were male breasts, then why were they removed? If they were female breasts (and had therefore become objectionable to the degree that surgery generally reserved for cancer treatment was morally obligatory) then wasn’t Elliot still Ellen and he still she?
How could I possibly have written that sentence in any sensible manner whatsoever while simultaneously making my point understandably — and not breaking Twitter’s rules against so-called hateful conduct? And Elliot Page just had his breasts removed?
Was he Elliot then? When, exactly? He was definitely Ellen at some point in the past, or so indicate all his/her/them/their film credits? Will all those have to be reshot, since they employ the hated “deadname” (that doesn’t exist, by the way, that “deadname” category, except in the censorial and addled minds of a tiny fraction of insanely narcissistic and increasingly dangerous trans activists). When precisely was it incumbent on me to switch my terminology in regard to Elliot/Ellen so that I was not engaging in hateful conduct? And how can I describe the fact that someone who was once a woman (and really still is) had her breasts cut off because she/he/her/them had fallen prey to a viciously harmful fad without using the appropriate sex-linked pronoun and the real name of the real person to whom this was really done (with her/his/their voluntary but unfortunate acquiescence)?
And so it was impossible to communicate what had happened to my audience without, apparently, running afoul of the impossible and absurd rules that now hypothetically govern morality itself in the days of the degenerated postmodern and Marxist ethos that we must still, no matter how impossible it is, abide by — or else.
And, you might object: Ellen/Elliot is an adult (thirty-something) and fully capable of making up her/his/their own mind about such things and she/he/they are welcome from the liberal and the libertarian position to go to hell in a handbasket as she/he/they see fit. And, fair enough — to some degree. But I don’t believe it is either merely picayune or inappropriate to point out that Ellen/Elliot, who is quite a good actor/actress, is also a ritual model for emulation, being a star, with all the privileges and, let us point out, the responsibilities that go along with that.
So, by acquiescing to this surgery, publicizing it and insisting upon the sanctity and moral virtue of his/her/their new expensive, dangerous, and medically-enhanced identity (and by participating in the whole identity charade), Ellen/Elliot has undoubtedly enticed many a poor, confused adolescent girl to blame her emergent pubescent self-consciousness, confusion, and discomfort on “being born in the wrong body” — and believing that the courageous, self- affirming, and morally admirable route is hormonal treatment, sterilization, subjugation to a lifetime of expensive medical complication (how delightfully profitable) and misery. And I believe, firmly, that Ellen/Elliot bears moral culpability for that.
And, finally, with regard to the final phrase “criminal physician,” I must say that I have had some post-coital (so to speak) regrets about that phrase. It is clearly the case that the surgical operation performed by the butchers who butchered Elliot/Ellen was legal. So, was it criminal or not? Were the operations undertaken by the fascist physicians who carried out the Nazi medical experiments legal? Yes, under the laws of the time. But were they criminal? I’ll leave that question up to you to answer.
And, further, perhaps it might be objected, “What about the damage done by hypothetically leaving those confused about their identity to dwell in their confusion? Aren’t we morally obliged to intervene?” And I would say, NO. Why? Well, first “do no harm” as the Hippocratic Oath (remember that?) insists. And, second, it has been a matter of historical consensus that sins of omission are less egregious than sins of commission. Thus, leaving someone with gender dysphoria — no matter how warranted (and perhaps it is, in a very tiny minority of truly unfortunate cases) — to suffer the consequences of the theoretical mismatch between soul and body is a less of a risk, ethically, personally, socially, and philosophically than the extremely active interventions that constitute so-called gender-confirming (another hated phrase) surgery.
I might also point out that the trans surgery enterprise is now a $300 million per annum growth industry (rate of expansion: 15% per year; projected increase by 2027 to $750 million per year). An expanding enterprise in a time of global uncertainty! Time to invest — both in the requisite surgical skills and, perhaps, in any industry associated with this vicious and unconscionable fad, primarily entangling (as such things so often do) the youthful and female. Isn’t that a concern, intersectionalists? Not when push comes to shove, or ideology to scalpel. Is that not a true moral hazard?
And I’m not taking down that tweet, or “acknowledging” that my tweet “violated the Twitter rules.” Up yours, woke moralists. We’ll see who cancels who. And I think, as well, that you woke folks at Twitter, working so hard to improve the world by so carelessly censoring (under the morally superior guise of “regulating hate”) have no idea what a tangled web you&#8217;ve entangled yourself in. Again. Yet again.
