President Donald Trump urged Congress on Wednesday to pass legislation capping credit card interest rates at 10% for the next year, a proposal that has drawn criticism from Republican lawmakers.
Trump pressed Congress to take action on credit card interest rates during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Last week, the president pressured banks and credit card companies to lower interest rates for one year, but he didn&#8217;t address how he would force them to comply. A deadline had been set for Jan. 20, but institutions have yet to follow Trump&#8217;s directive.
&#8220;The profit margin for credit card companies now exceeds 50%, and they charge Americans interest rates of 28%, 30%, 31%, 32%. Whatever happened to usury?&#8221; Trump <a href="https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/2013983796039647649">said</a> on Wednesday. &#8220;So, to help our citizens recover from the Biden disaster all caused by this horrible president, I&#8217;m asking Congress to cap credit card interest rates at 10% for one year.&#8221;
&#8220;And this will help millions of Americans save for a home,&#8221; he added.
Leftist Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who has pushed for capping credit card interest rates, said last week that Trump <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/14/warren-trump-credit-card-interest-rate-affordability.html">called her</a> to discuss the issue. Warren said that she told Trump &#8220;he had not lifted a finger to try to get something through on credit card interest rate caps.”
Democratic socialist Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Republican Josh Hawley of Missouri also support the idea. Both senators introduced a bill last year to cap credit card interest rates at 10% for five years. Leftist Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Florida Republican Anna Paulina Luna introduced a similar bill in the House, but the legislation has not made any progress in Congress.
When Trump publicly floated the idea of capping interest rates last week, Republican leaders in the Senate and House poured cold water on the proposal. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said last Tuesday, &#8220;The president is the ideas guy,” adding, “I wouldn’t get too spun up about ideas that are out of the box, that are proposed or suggested,&#8221; POLITICO <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2026/01/13/trump-credit-cards-congress-republicans-00725477">reported</a>.
&#8220;You&#8217;ve got to be very careful if you go forward in that,&#8221; Johnson continued. &#8220;In our zeal to bring down costs, you don&#8217;t want to have negative secondary effects. The problem is, if you do that, then the credit card companies, the negative secondary effect is that they would just stop lending money, and maybe they cap what people are able to borrow at a very low amount.&#8221;
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said, “That’s not something I’m out there advocating for.&#8221; Thune told NBC News that he believes Trump is getting bad advice.
&#8220;He may be getting advice on some of those issues, like, for example, the 10% cap on credit cards,” he said. “Don’t know where that came from. I don’t know. I don’t know the answer.”
Now that Trump has called on Congress to act on capping credit card interest rates, Republican leaders could find themselves in a tougher spot if they continue to publicly oppose his plan.
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, who is also in Davos, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/21/jamie-dimon-trump-credit-card-rate-cap-vermont-massachusetts.html">said</a> on Wednesday that a cap on credit card interest rates &#8220;would be an economic disaster.&#8221;
“In the worst case, you’d have a drastic reduction of the credit card business” for 80% of Americans, Dimon said, according to CNBC. He then quipped that the United States should test the idea in Warren&#8217;s and Sanders&#8217; home states of Massachusetts and Vermont, &#8220;and see what happens.&#8221; The banker added that those on &#8220;the Left&#8221; who push for price controls “will learn a real lesson, and the people crying the most won’t be the credit card companies.&#8221;
“It’ll be the restaurants, the retailers, the travel companies, the schools, the municipalities, because people miss their water payments,” Dimon said. “It would be something else to watch.”

Two weeks ago, Bloomberg anchor Lisa Abramowicz, discussing the sale of Nvidia H200s to China with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/will-president-trump-sell-advanced-ai-chips-to-china">asked</a>, “Is it more of a national security risk to give China some of these high-powered chips, or is it more of a national security risk to not have United States tech in China?”
Lutnick replied, saying that very question was sitting on the president’s desk. On Monday, President Trump delivered his answer.
“I have informed President Xi, of China, that the United States will allow Nvidia to ship its H200 products to approved customers in China, and other Countries, under conditions that allow for continued strong National Security,” the president announced. “President Xi responded positively! 25% will be paid to the United States of America.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for clarification on whether that 25% will be paid by foreign governments, strictly Chinese buyers, or the AI companies themselves. In August, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/morning-brief-trumps-d-c-takeover-a-china-chip-deal-border-wall-2-0">reports</a> surfaced of a separate arrangement in which Nvidia and AMD would share 15% of their profits with the United States government.
President Trump emphasized that Nvidia’s most advanced chips, Blackwell and Rubin, would not be included in H200 export authorization.
The decision drew an immediate rebuke from Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). “After his backroom meeting with Donald Trump and his company’s donation to the Trump ballroom, CEO Jensen Huang got his wish to sell the most powerful AI chip we’ve ever sold to China.”
Warren called for Huang to “testify publicly and under oath” in front of Congress.

Trump defended the move, insisting it would not compromise national security. “We will protect national security, create American jobs, and keep America’s lead in AI,” he stated.
Earlier this month, Samuel Hammond, the chief economist at the Foundation for American Innovation, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/will-president-trump-sell-advanced-ai-chips-to-china">told</a> The Daily Wire, “Permitting H200 exports to China would be a world-historic mistake. America’s current lead in AI would be radically diminished with very little to show for it.”
AI Czar David Sacks, speaking at the Salesforce Dreamforce conference, described the export policy as a complicated endeavor.
“What we ship to China is complicated,” he said, noting that current policy permits less advanced chips to be sold abroad, but that the fight in Washington is where that line is drawn. “Some people want to draw that line very, very restrictively.”
Sacks has not yet commented on the H200 decision — but earlier on Monday, he weighed in on the president’s forthcoming “One Rule” executive order. “There must be only one rulebook if we are going to continue to lead in AI,” Trump said, warning that “we are beating all countries at this point in the [AI] race, but that won’t last for long if we are going to have 50 States involved in the rules and approval process.”
Addressing concerns on the AI preemption, Sacks stated that with 50 different AI models for 50 different states, America will end up with a &#8220;regulatory morass worse than Europe.&#8221; The AI czar <a href="https://x.com/DavidSacks/status/1998125180753944985">added</a>, &#8220;If we want America to win the AI race, a confusing patchwork of regulation will not work.&#8221;
Further details on the &#8220;One Rule&#8221; executive order, as well as clarification on the H200 sale to China, are expected later this week.

The Trump administration notched a victory when a Kentucky federal judge temporarily blocked the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from implementing a rule critics say puts Americans&#8217; financial data at risk.
The 1033 Rule, proposed under President Joe Biden&#8217;s CFPB Director Rohit Chopra, <a href="https://www.consumerfinance.gov/personal-financial-data-rights/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">requires</a> banks to &#8220;make available to consumers, upon request, transaction data and other information concerning a consumer financial product or service that the consumer obtained from the covered entity.&#8221;
Forcht Bank, the Kentucky Bankers Association, and the Bank Policy Institute sued to block the rule, saying it exceeded the CFPB’s authority and would force the institutions to hand over large amounts of sensitive data, creating security and liability risks. Judge Danny C. Reeves of the United States District Court for Kentucky concluded the rule could cause more harm than good.
&#8220;The public could arguably lose some benefit from the Rule not being enforced at the set compliance deadlines,&#8221; said the judge. &#8220;However, the plaintiffs also contend that enforcement of the current Rule puts consumers at risk due to security risk as to their banking information.&#8221;
The <a href="https://bpi.com/joint-statement-on-courts-decision-to-stay-section-1033-compliance-deadline/">Bank Policy Institute</a> issued a statement saying the organization was grateful for the court&#8217;s decision.
&#8220;This is a common-sense procedural step,&#8221; said the Bank Policy Institute. It &#8220;doesn’t interfere with the rulemaking process but ensures banks won’t be forced to invest time and resources preparing for a rule that is currently being rewritten.”
&#8220;This preliminary injunction marks a pivotal moment for those who value consumer privacy and limited-government issues,&#8221; a source familiar with the matter told The Daily Wire. &#8220;The Trump administration now has a unique opportunity to advance a new 1033 rule that gets the government out of the way and unleashes innovation.”
Under Vought&#8217;s leadership, the CFPB issued <a href="https://www.consumerfinance.gov/personal-financial-data-rights/">an advance notice of proposed rulemaking,</a> inviting the public to give input to form the basis of the final rule. Once input has been provided, the CFPB will share a draft of the rule.
The CFPB is now analyzing public comments and data around four key issues related to the implementation of the 1033 rule: who should be allowed to access financial data on a customer&#8217;s behalf, whether companies should be allowed to charge data sharing fees, how big are the security risks of sharing financial data, and how big are the privacy risks.
The Bank Policy Institute writes that the current rule &#8220;unlawfully mandated banks to share sensitive consumer data with third-party fintechs and aggregators; it required no oversight of third parties using bank customer data,&#8221; among other issues.
Earlier this year, Chopra was notified that he had been <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-fires-rohit-chopra-director-of-the-consumer-financial-protection-bureau/">fired by the president</a> via an email from the White House. President Trump appointed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to lead the agency in interim before handing the reins over to Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought.
Rethinking the CFPB has been a priority of the Trump administration&#8217;s since the start of his term. In February, the White House issued a statement stating that the agency &#8220;has long functioned as another woke, weaponized arm of the bureaucracy that leverages its power against certain industries and individuals disfavored by so-called elites.&#8221;
The Trump administration accused the CFPB of &#8220;supporting radical advocacy groups, threatening banks for refusing to lend to illegal immigrants, targeting a Chicago small business after it complained about the city&#8217;s rampant crime, and mining American citizens&#8217; personal financial information.&#8221;
On The Charlie Kirk Show, Vought discussed the importance of putting a stop to the agency&#8217;s ability to weaponize &#8220;the tools of financial laws against small mom and pop lenders and other small financial institutions.&#8221;

President Donald Trump took questions from reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, and when the topic turned to Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), the president quickly went off script.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) defended self-described Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani during a CNBC appearance on Monday, claiming that raising taxes on the rich was the best way to make New York City &#8220;vibrant&#8221; and &#8220;workable&#8221; again.
Warren got into a heated exchange with &#8220;Squawk on the Street&#8221; host David Faber over Mamdani, New York City&#8217;s Democratic mayoral nominee, and his plan to make things in the city more &#8220;affordable&#8221; for the working class by heaping additional taxes on the wealthy and businesses.

Warren protested, claiming that people had threatened to leave over higher taxes, but made it clear that she didn&#8217;t believe they were likely to follow through on those threats.

&#8220;And they have! And Goldman Sachs, when they create new jobs, they do it in Dallas. And Blackstone won’t build a new headquarters [in New York City]. I could go on and on,&#8221; Faber replied.

Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts tumbled on the Senate floor on Thursday after a desk she leaned on toppled under her weight.
Warren fell awkwardly backwards to sit on one of the Senate’s tiered platforms before being helped back to her feet. The fall appeared to cause quite a commotion, as over half a dozen senators rushed to help Warren after she fell.
GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was the first to reach Warren’s side. Warren appeared to give him a few pats of appreciation for his assistance. Warren appears to be unharmed.

Video of the fall quickly went viral online as users poked fun at Warren’s ungraceful display.
“This puts the Tip in Tippecanoe. (I’ll see myself out),” conservative sports commentator Clay Travis <a href="https://x.com/ClayTravis/status/1950996091861717345">posted</a>, a veiled reference to Warren’s past claims of Native American heritage.
Dave Rubin, host of “The Rubin Report,” <a href="https://x.com/RubinReport/status/1950990987846705588">posted</a> that “Warren’s Indian name was Falls On A**.”
“Looks like Senator Warren has been hitting the peace pipe,” another user <a href="https://x.com/sean_spicier/status/1950996074430185785">posted</a>.
Warren’s claims to Native American ancestry trace back decades and she has faced criticism for using a thin genetic connection to Native Americans to identify as a Native American on applications. For instance, in 1986, Warren <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/elizabeth-warren-apologizes-for-calling-herself-native-american/2019/02/05/1627df76-2962-11e9-984d-9b8fba003e81_story.html">identified</a> as a Native American on her registration card for the State Bar of Texas.
Seeking to tamp down criticism of her heritage claims in 2018, Warren released a blood test that said she had a Native American ancestor between six and 10 generations back. That would make Warren anywhere between 1/64th and 1/1,024 Native American.
Warren’s use of the blood test to silence her critics earned her a rebuke from the Cherokee Nation, of which Warren claimed to be.
The Cherokee Nation’s then-secretary of state, Chuck Hoskin Jr., <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/warren-faces-ancestry-question-at-town-hall-i-shouldnt-have-done-it-i-am-not-a-person-of-color">said</a> that the use of “a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong … dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is [proven].”
Warren later apologized for claiming to be Native American. In a town hall in December 2019, she said she “shouldn’t have done it. I am not a person of color; I am not a citizen of a tribe; and I have apologized for confusion I’ve caused on tribal citizenship, tribal sovereignty, and for any harm that I’ve caused.”

CNBC Hosts Use Economic Numbers To Roast Elizabeth Warren

Donald Trump Jr. teamed up with anti-Trump businessman Mark Cuban to dunk on leftist Senator Elizabeth Warren for doing “nothing” to combat what they say are the key drivers of out-of-control health care prices. 
Trump Jr. signaled his support for Cuban after the “Shark Tank” host criticized Warren for ignoring the role of pharmacy benefit managers, known as PBMs, in health care pricing. PBMs are the middlemen between drug manufacturers, insurance companies, pharmacies — and, by extension, patients — and have been criticized by the Federal Trade Commission, among others, for inflating drug prices.
On Wednesday, Warren <a href="https://x.com/SenWarren/status/1935443373487440373" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> on X saying that the tax system was “rigged” because large pharmaceutical companies like Johnson &amp; Johnson charge the “highest drug prices in the WORLD while often paying ZERO dollars in federal taxes themselves.”
In response, Cuban attacked Warren for not looking at the role of PBMs.
“No. It&#8217;s because  PBMs corrupt healthcare. Big Pharma wishes they could set their own pricing. They don&#8217;t.  PBMs control formularies and manipulate prices,  in exchange for providing pharma  access to patients. It&#8217;s how they  maximize rebate revenue,” Cuban <a href="https://x.com/mcuban/status/1935705831930298562">posted</a>. “In fact, 3 PBMs NEGOTIATE MORE THAN 90% OF REBATES  for commercial insurance plans.That&#8217;s your area of expertise,  and you have done nothing.”
Trump Jr. reacted by saying he completely agreed with Cuban on this issue. Cuban is known for his vehement opposition to President Donald Trump and was even floated as potential VP pick for Kamala Harris.

President Donald Trump and Cuban have traded blows for years, including over the course of the 2024 campaign, when Cuban campaigned for Harris.

PBMs have faced increasing scrutiny from both federal regulators and lawmakers. 
Last year, the FTC released a damning report <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/a-little-known-health-care-middleman-is-becoming-more-powerful-independent-pharmacies-say-that-spells-disaster-for-patients" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saying</a> that smaller independent pharmacies suffer because of PBMs restrictions, while large corporate pharmacies like CVS benefit. 
“PBMs hold substantial influence over independent pharmacies by imposing unfair, arbitrary, and harmful contractual terms that can impact independent pharmacies’ ability to stay in business and serve their communities,” the FTC found. 
In Arkansas, Republican Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed a law preventing PBMs from holding permits for prescription drug sales in the state. After the law was signed, CVS, which owns pharmacy benefits manager, Caremark Rx, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/every-cvs-pharmacy-in-red-state-might-close-after-crackdown-on-drug-middlemen" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that it may close all of its pharmacies in Arkansas if it retains its current business model. 
Trump has also weighed in on the issue, signing an executive order targeting PBMs. The order encourages direct consumer purchases, cutting out PBMs, and mandates more pricing transparency.

The GOP-led Senate passed on Tuesday a stablecoin regulation bill that supporters argued will help the United States become the &#8220;global leader&#8221; in cryptocurrency.
A bipartisan group of 68 senators voted in favor of the <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/1582/text" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GENIUS Act</a>, which prevailed after hitting a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/crypto-bill-falters-in-senate-for-now" target="_blank" rel="noopener">speed bump</a> in May before going through <a href="https://www.congress.gov/amendment/119th-congress/senate-amendment/2307" target="_blank" rel="noopener">amendments</a>. Another 30 members banded together in opposing the legislation.
Spearheaded by Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN), the measure seeks to create a framework for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/white-house-gop-leaders-pledge-major-crypto-bills-in-first-100-days" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stablecoins</a>, which are significant in digital asset exchanges and pegged to stable assets such as the U.S. dollar.
&#8220;The GENIUS Act will cement U.S. dollar dominance, protect customers, drive demand for U.S. Treasuries, &amp; ensure that digital asset innovation happens in the U.S., not overseas,&#8221; Hagerty said in a post on X. &#8220;With this bill, we are one step closer to becoming the global leader in crypto.&#8221;
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) was one of the lawmakers who voted against the bill. Sharing a Wall Street Journal article on how Walmart and Amazon are exploring their own stablecoins, she warned on Monday the legislation needed changes.
&#8220;If Congress doesn’t fix the GENIUS Act, billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos could launch stablecoins that track your purchases, exploit your data, and squeeze out competitors,&#8221; Warren <a href="https://x.com/SenWarren/status/1934686958875246824" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> on X. &#8220;These billionaires will come begging for a taxpayer bailout when it inevitably blows up.&#8221;
Warren <a href="https://x.com/SenWarren/status/1934686958875246824" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a>: &#8220;The GENIUS Act has a major loophole allowing Big Tech companies and major retailers to issue their own private currencies structured as stablecoins. This bill shouldn&#8217;t pass without amendments preventing these risks.&#8221;
President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration has endorsed the bill, which now heads to the Republican-controlled House.
&#8220;Recent reporting projects that stablecoins could grow into a $3.7 trillion market by the end of the decade. That scenario becomes more likely with passage of the GENIUS Act,&#8221; Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent <a href="https://x.com/SecScottBessent/status/1935027160374210573" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> on X.
&#8220;A thriving stablecoin ecosystem will drive demand from the private sector for US Treasuries, which back stablecoins. This newfound demand could lower government borrowing costs and help rein in the national debt. It could also onramp millions of new users—across the globe—to the dollar-based digital asset economy,&#8221; Bessent continued.
Insisting that it is a &#8220;win-win-win&#8221; for the private sector, the Treasury, and consumers, Bessent concluded: &#8220;These are the fruits of smart, pro-innovation legislation.&#8221;

As it stands, Democrats in Congress can investigate Musk and make requests for interviews and documents. However, because they lack a majority in the House and Senate, they do not have the power to subpoena or schedule official hearings. That may change after the 2026 midterm elections if Republicans lose seats.
In a post on X announcing his departure, Musk thanked Trump &#8220;for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending&#8221; and said that the DOGE &#8220;mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.&#8221;
Many GOP lawmakers praised Musk after he confirmed his time as a special government employee was coming to an end. They have also voiced eagerness to codify the so-called &#8220;DOGE cuts,&#8221; a process that is set to begin next week, when the White House is expected to send its first <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-budget-director-confirms-first-targets-for-clawing-back-spending" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rescissions package</a> to the House.

Warren was not alone in her defense of Biden: a majority of Democrats and media personalities — some of whom have since written books detailing Biden&#8217;s obvious cognitive decline despite aiding in covering it up at the time — tried to blame Republicans and right-leaning media and accused them of making Biden look impaired when he really wasn&#8217;t.
