The Trump administration announced Tuesday that national park fees will be raised for foreign tourists visiting the United States, while fees for American families will remain the same. 
Starting on January 1,  2026, the Department of the Interior announced that annual park passes will cost $80 for U.S. citizens and permanent residents and $250 for nonresidents. Nonresidents without annual passes will have to pay $100 per person to enter the top 11 most visited national parks in addition to the standard entrance fee. The extra money charged to foreign tourists will go toward maintenance and care of the parks, the Interior Department said. 
“President Trump’s leadership always puts American families first,” said Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum on Tuesday. “These policies ensure that U.S. taxpayers, who already support the National Park System, continue to enjoy affordable access, while international visitors contribute their fair share to maintaining and improving our parks for future generations.”

American citizens and permanent residents will also get fee-free access to the parks on Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day Weekend, the National Park Service’s 110th anniversary, Constitution Day, Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday, and Veterans’ Day. 
The 11 parks where foreign tourists will have to <a href="https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm">pay more</a> include Acadia National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Everglades National Park, Glacier National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park, and Zion National Park.

The new fee structure came after President Donald Trump signed an executive order in July to raise entrance and recreation fees at parks for nonresidents. 
“To fund improvements and enhanced experiences across the park systems,” Trump said. “I’ve just signed an executive order to raise entrance fees for foreign tourists while keeping prices low for Americans. And we’re going to do that. The National Parks will be about America First, we’re gonna take it America First.”
The <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/07/making-america-beautiful-again-by-improving-our-national-parks/">executive order</a> stated that the additional funds raised will be used to enhance park infrastructure and make the parks more accessible and affordable for Americans. 
In recent years, there has been an increase in tourism at national parks, with a <a href="https://www.nps.gov/subjects/socialscience/visitor-use-statistics-dashboard.htm">record</a> 331.9 million visitors in 2024. That was up from the 2016 record of 330,971,689 visits.

The Trump administration is rolling back Biden-era regulations that blocked energy development in Alaska’s national petroleum reserve.
The Biden administration restricted oil exploration and drilling across 13.3 million acres of the National Petroleum Reserve of Alaska (APR-A) last year in a move that angered industry, state, and tribal leaders. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced Monday that the Trump administration would reverse those rules.
“Congress was clear: the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska was set aside to support America’s energy security through responsible development,” said Burgum in a <a href="https://www.doi.gov/pressreleases/interior-moves-rescind-2024-rule-alaskas-petroleum-reserve">statement</a>. “The 2024 rule ignored that mandate, prioritizing obstruction over production and undermining our ability to harness domestic resources at a time when American energy independence has never been more critical. We&#8217;re restoring the balance and putting our energy future back on track.”
Alaska’s sole representative in the U.S. House, Nick Begich, celebrated the news.

Last year, the Biden administration issued final rules banning oil and gas drilling across 10.6 million acres in the oil reserve. Over another roughly three million acres, the administration put added protections in place. The rules locked up more than half of the state&#8217;s roughly 23 million-acre petroleum reserve.
The Biden administration also denied the state a permit to build a 211-mile industrial road through the Alaskan wilderness to reach a large copper deposit.
Biden&#8217;s Interior Department cracked down on development in the preserve after the administration approved the Willow Project, an $8 billion oil development project in Alaska. The approval ignited protest against the Biden administration from environmental groups. The administration then cracked down on oil and gas development in Alaska while fuel prices in the United States <a href="https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=pet&amp;s=emm_epm0_pte_nus_dpg&amp;f=m">remained</a> high.
The entire preserve “contains a mean estimate of 895 million barrels of oil and a mean estimate of 52.8 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of natural gas,” according to an Institute for Energy Research <a href="https://www.instituteforenergyresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/National-Petroleum-Reserve-Fact-Sheet-DRS-1-2.pdf">fact sheet</a>.
The Department of the Interior on Monday said that former President Joe Biden’s action “exceeds the agency’s statutory authority under the Naval Petroleum Reserves Production Act of 1976.”
“The 2024 rule significantly expanded procedural requirements and created a presumption against oil and gas activity in approximately 13 million acres designated as ‘Special Areas’ unless operators could prove minimal or no adverse effects on surface resources. These provisions not only lack a basis in the Naval Petroleum Reserves Production Act but undermine the BLM’s obligation to carry out an effective and timely leasing program,” the Interior Department said.
President Donald Trump has prioritized developing the United States’ domestic oil and gas resources. He has also marked out Alaska’s resources for development, in particular.
One of Trump’s first moves as president was to <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/unleashing-alaskas-extraordinary-resource-potential/">direct</a> a streamlined regulatory process for development in Alaska, covering not just oil and gas, but mining, forestry, fishing, and other industries.

Topline: American investment is surging despite turmoil around Trump’s tariffs – and the GDP is slightly slipping.
The GDP shrank by 0.3% in the first quarter of 2025, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped about 200 points in response to that news. But if we dig into the numbers the data is mixed – and there are actually some significant positives. During a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Trump and other administration officials challenged the media’s narrative about the economy, arguing that they are turning Biden’s economy around and that “core GDP” is on the rise.
“I was very against everything Biden was doing in terms of the economy,” Trump <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-1xpqn6z2o">said</a>. “ But we took over his mess in so many different ways… despite what we were handed we turned them around.”
White House trade advisor Peter Navarro broke down how the administration crunched the numbers. He said that a surge in imports and DOGE slashing government waste make the GDP look much lower on paper. “The markets need to look below the surface of that,” Navarro said. “We had a 22% increase in domestic investments. That is off the charts.”
In that same cabinet meeting, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick laid out details about how another semiconductor company, which is the main chip supplier for Apple, is building a major manufacturing plant in Arizona. Trump also said he has gotten $8 trillion in new investments in the United States since taking office.
Inflation slowed to its lowest rate since September, and consumer spending increased by $135 billion, or 0.7%. Much of that was Americans buying cars and other big-ticket items, partly to get ahead of Trump’s tariffs. Meanwhile, prices were static in March, and personal incomes rose by $116.8 billion, or 0.5%.

Topline: The Trump Administration is looking to break America’s reliance on Chinese natural resources by expanding domestic mining and drilling.
The Department of the Interior oversees billions of acres of federal lands and waters and has the power to open up new land for mining and drilling operations. Under the Trump administration, it’s doing just that.
This month, when China announced a ban on the export of several rare earth minerals, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced that he would reverse President Biden’s so-called “war on mining” to ensure the United States could begin producing those minerals on its own. 
“Obama, Biden, you know, their whole approach was we&#8217;re gonna shut down mining, we&#8217;re gonna shut down oil and gas development,” Burgum told The Daily Wire. “They really, I’m gonna say, crushed the mining industry, both the extraction of these resources, but also the processing of that…China was happy to have the rest of the Western world stop mining so that they could take control of the markets around these critical minerals, which we need for defense, for technology, for electronics, really for everything today in modern life depends on it. So now in the United States, we&#8217;ve gotta get back in the game.”
Because President Trump made an emergency energy declaration, Secretary Burgum, who’s also the Chair of the National Energy Dominance Council, was able to bypass regulations that typically result in years-long delays on new mining projects. Now, they’ll be approved within two weeks. Burgum told the Daily Wire that overregulation of the mining industry has driven business out of the U.S. — forcing us to be more reliant on countries like China. Burgum says that bringing mining back to the United States will be better for the global environment. 
“We do it cleaner, better, safer, smarter and healthier here in the U.S. because when we attack these resource-based industries, we don&#8217;t reduce the demand. We just shift the supply overseas and they shift it to China, who might be extracting this from in the DRC in the middle of Africa. And they&#8217;re doing it without reclamation. They&#8217;re doing it with, sometimes, slave labor, prisoner labor. They&#8217;re doing it with no emissions control on what they&#8217;re doing. So it&#8217;s worse for the global environment. It helps our adversaries, it hurts our economy, and it&#8217;s horrible for national security.”

A report from Reuters published Wednesday says that China has created a list of U.S.-made products that will be exempt from its retaliatory 125% tariffs, in addition to other exemptions it has already made on pharmaceuticals, microchips, and aircraft engines. Behind the scenes, Beijing is apparently privately notifying companies about these latest exemptions – that’s obviously to preserve this posture that China will fight Trump on tariffs to the end. 
Trump has said he’s <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/28/trump-xi-tariffs-china-bessent.html">in trade talks</a> with China and that President Xi recently called him. China has denied it and is publicly putting on a bold face. 
“Bowing to a bully is like drinking poison to quench thirst. It only deepens the crisis.” A widely disseminated Chinese propaganda video said earlier this week. “ Make no mistake, the U.S. will keep flip-flopping and playing hardball. But China will stand firm, no matter how hard the wind blows, no matter how clouds rage.”
Last week, China made its largest cancellation of pork orders in five years, halting about 12,000 tons of U.S. pork. The nation has also significantly reduced its soybean order by 97% compared to two weeks ago. For some context, U.S. farmers export more than $176 billion in agricultural products a year. Nearly 10% of that is soybeans and pork for China.

The Departments of the Interior (DOI) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD) are creating a taskforce to study how federal land could be used to alleviate America’s housing shortage.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and HUD chief Scott Turner announced the partnership between their departments on Monday in a clip posted to social media. The two cabinet secretaries signed an agreement to begin work on tackling “our nation’s housing affordability crisis.”
“HUD will work with DOI to assess the housing needs in areas where federal lands may. Available yet underutilized and implement tailored housing programs with guidance from states and localities,” Turner said.
Burgum added: “This partnership will identify underutilized federal lands suitable for residential development and streamline the land transfer process. It will also promote policies to increase the availability of affordable housing while balancing important environmental and land use considerations.”

The federal government owns about a quarter of the land inside the United States, and most of that land is located in the western regions of the country. The Bureau of Land Management, which resides within the Department of the Interior, is responsible for overseeing much of that land.
The effort to build millions of new homes, if it proves workable, would be one of the largest housing efforts in United States history. Past attempts have been unsuccessful, however, largely due to disagreements between officials at the various levels of government involved in such an undertaking, according to <a href="https://www.wsj.com/economy/housing/trump-wants-to-build-homes-on-federal-land-heres-what-that-would-look-like-6b8fb82e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Wall Street Journal</a>.
The housing plan would likely focus on federal lands around major cities such as Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City, according to experts. A preliminary analysis by a conservative think tank, the American Enterprise Institute, found that housing developments on just 512,000 acres of the federal government’s roughly 640 million acres would result in three to four million homes.
Burgum and Turner outlined the agreement in an <a href="https://www.wsj.com/opinion/federal-land-can-be-home-sweet-home-joint-task-force-hud-interior-department-housing-affordability-3a281d36?mod=article_inline" target="_blank" rel="noopener">op-ed</a> in The Wall Street Journal on Sunday.
“HUD will pinpoint where housing needs are most pressing and guide the process by working with state and local leaders who know their communities best. Interior will identify locations that can support homes while carefully considering environmental impact and land-use restrictions,” the secretaries wrote.
“Streamlining the regulatory process is a cornerstone of this partnership. Historically, building on federal land is a nightmare of red tape—lengthy environmental reviews, complex transfer protocols and disjointed agency priorities. This partnership will cut through the bureaucracy,” they continued. “This isn’t a free-for-all to build on federal lands, although we recognize that bad-faith critics will likely call it that. It’s a strategic effort to use our resources responsibly while preserving our most beautiful lands.”

Burgum, Turner Announce Taskforce To Tackle ‘Housing Affordability Crisis’ In U.S.

Former North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum will lay out his vision for bringing on a new era of American energy dominance in the opening remarks of his Thursday morning confirmation hearing, according to a copy of his prepared remarks obtained by The Daily Wire.
Burgum is President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to serve as the next secretary of the Department of the Interior. During his nomination hearing on Thursday, Burgum is expected to tell senators that energy dominance can be America’s “big stick” on the world stage.
After laying out his background and experience, Burgum will endorse a “big stick” approach to energy and production, a reference to former President Theodore Roosevelt’s advice to “speak softly and carry a big stick.”
“When energy production is restricted in America, it doesn’t reduce demand, it just shifts production to countries like Russia, Venezuela, and Iran – whose autocratic leaders don’t care about the environment,” Burgum will say.
“In our time, President Trump’s Energy Dominance can be America’s ‘big stick’ that is leveraged to achieve historic prosperity and world peace. The Department of the Interior – in cooperation with U.S. Congress, this committee, and the states – will play a pivotal role in achieving the outcomes to make the world safer and America even better for our children, grandchildren, and generations to come,” Burgum will say.
The former North Dakota governor will recount his life growing up in a small town in North Dakota to running a global company before he served in public office for the first time in 2016 as his state’s governor. 
&#8220;Growing up I worked at our family’s grain elevator. Every job I had through college was one that required showering at the end of the day — not the beginning. This included paying my way through North Dakota State University by working as a chimney sweep,&#8221; he will say.
Burgum will highlight his experience working to manage North Dakota’s lands and natural resources while improving relations with its tribes.

In the final days of his term, President Joe Biden is set to ban new offshore oil and gas developments in some areas of the U.S. coast, a move that would hinder President-elect Donald Trump&#8217;s push for more energy production.
Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-01-02/biden-to-block-more-offshore-oil-drilling-before-trump-arrives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> on Thursday that Biden is expected to issue an executive order &#8220;within days&#8221; that would prevent the sale of drilling rights in certain areas of the outer continental shelf. Biden&#8217;s move to further ban offshore drilling would be based on a <a href="https://www.boem.gov/oil-gas-energy/leasing/ocs-lands-act-history" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1953 law</a> that gives the president the power to permanently stop offshore oil drilling in U.S. waters without explicitly giving presidents the power to revoke oil drilling bans enacted by their predecessors, according to Bloomberg.
Biden has been pressured by Democrats and left-wing environmentalists to ban more offshore drilling before he leaves office and Trump takes over on January 20. In 2023, Biden <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-slammed-after-admin-cuts-new-offshore-oil-leases-to-lowest-levels-ever" target="_blank" rel="noopener">severely cut back</a> on how many spots the government leases to oil companies in the Gulf of Mexico, allowing “a maximum of three potential oil and gas lease sales – the fewest oil and gas lease sales in history – in the Gulf of Mexico Program Area scheduled in 2025, 2027 and 2029,” according to the Department of the Interior (DOI).
Biden and his administration officials reportedly intensified efforts to ban more oil and gas drilling after Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in November. Earlier this week, the DOI <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-moves-to-lock-up-miles-of-nevada-land-under-environmental-rules" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> a slate of environmental rules for Nevada’s Ruby Mountains, including banning energy development along a large portion of the range for the next 20 years. The Biden administration also purchased a 640-acre, equivalent to a square mile, parcel of land from Wyoming within the Grand Teton National Park. The purchase also came with permanent environmental bans over the piece of land.

“We have to start always with energy,” Trump said. “I don’t want to be boring about it, but there’s no bigger subject that covers everything. If you make donuts, if you make cars, whatever you make, energy is a big deal.”

The Biden administration is moving to lock up hundreds of thousands of acres of land weeks before he is set to leave office.
The Department of the Interior (DOI) <a href="https://www.doi.gov/pressreleases/biden-harris-administration-proposes-protections-ruby-mountains" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> on Monday a slate of environmental rules for Nevada’s Ruby Mountains, including banning energy development along a large portion of the range for the next 20 years.
“The Ruby Mountains are cherished by local communities for their scenic value, cultural heritage, numerous wildlife and benefit to the local economy through a thriving outdoor recreation industry,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said in a statement. “Today, we are taking an important and sensible step to pause new oil and gas leasing to ensure that we have the science and public input necessary to inform proposed protections of the Ruby Mountains area for future generations.”
The announcement coincided with a notice to the Federal Register that initiates a 90-day public comment period for the proposed withdrawal of 264,000 acres of land from potential geothermal and oil and gas development for 20 years, the maximum length of time the Interior Secretary can lock up land. Permanent bans on federal land require an act of Congress.
The withdrawal notice does not otherwise regulate mining over the area, according to the press release. Nevada is a well-known source of gold deposits, being one of the top-producing regions of gold in the world.
Alongside the Ruby Mountain withdrawal, the DOI also announced the purchase of a 640-acre, equivalent to a square mile, parcel of land from Wyoming within the Grand Teton National Park. The purchase also came with permanent environmental bans over the piece of land.
“Today marks an incredible milestone, decades in the making, to permanently protect an essential wildlife migration corridor and treasured landscape within Grand Teton National Park,” Haaland <a href="https://www.doi.gov/pressreleases/interior-department-announces-permanent-protections-critical-land-and-wildlife" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “This will benefit our public lands and Wyoming’s public school students for generations to come.”

President-elect Donald Trump has announced his choice to be the next Secretary of the Interior: two-term North Dakota Republican Gov. Doug Burgum.
“If confirmed by the Senate, Burgum would manage the more than 500 million acres of federal land as well as the fossil fuels and minerals that lie beneath the surface — making him a critical component in Trump’s promise to boost oil and gas output,” POLITICO <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/11/14/doug-burgum-interior-secretary-trump-00188590">noted</a>, adding, “North Dakota is the third-largest oil-producing state in the country and also has more than 4 million acres under federal oversight.”

But in North Dakota, he tried to find some level of balance to make sure that important conservation areas, important areas for tourism, weren’t harmed in the process.”

Trump Picks Burgum For Secretary Of Interior

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/environment" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Endangered Species Act</a> (ESA), which turned 50 years old on Thursday, has largely failed to restore populations of endangered species, according to government data analyzed by researchers at the Property and Environment Research Center (PERC).
The ESA, overseen and enforced by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), is the backbone of the federal government’s efforts to conserve endangered or threatened species. The act has two primary goals: save species from extinction, then help them recover.
But USFWS data show a massive gap between the ESA’s impact on the rate of extinction versus its ability to help species recover, according to USFWS data <a href="https://www.perc.org/2023/07/26/missing-the-mark/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">analyzed</a> by PERC vice president of research Shawn Regan and PERC research fellow Katherine Wright.
Over the ESA’s lifetime, just 3% of species listed under the act as protected species have ever recovered. In a social media post marking the ESA’s 50th anniversary, Regan noted that the act has a 99% rate at keeping species from extinction. But the act has failed in its “ultimate goal,” he said.
“The act’s ultimate goal, however, is not to prevent extinction; it&#8217;s to recover species to the point that the act’s protections are no longer needed,” Regan wrote. “But of the 1,732 domestic species listed under the act, just 57 (3%) have recovered. This is not good news!”

In addition to low rate of recovery, the USFWS has missed a large majority of its projections for recovery as well.
Regan and Wright “compared the number of recovered species to the number the agency projected should be recovered by [2023]. The results weren’t great,” Regan said. “We find that most of the species projected to recover by now have not. The [USFWS] projected to recover 300 species by 2023, but only 13 of those species have recovered. (The other 44 recovered species did not have projected recovery dates.)”

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/biden-administration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Biden administration</a> announced on Wednesday that it would be canceling oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Preserve and move to ban drilling in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/alaska" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alaska&#8217;s</a> National Petroleum Reserve. 
The <a href="https://doi.gov/pressreleases/biden-harris-administration-takes-major-steps-protect-arctic-lands-and-wildlife-alaska" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announcement</a> from the Department of the Interior means that seven leases for drilling given during the Trump administration will be rescinded and that 13 million acres in the National Petroleum Reserve will be off limits for drilling if the proposed rule is approved. The leases <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-admin-axe-alaska-oil-gas-leases-backed-state-lawmakers-native-americans" target="_blank" rel="noopener">were held</a> by the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA) and encompassed 365,775 acres. 
“Alaska is home to many of America’s most breathtaking natural wonders and culturally significant areas. As the climate crisis warms the Arctic more than twice as fast as the rest of the world, we have a responsibility to protect this treasured region for all ages,” President Joe Biden said in a statement. 
The announcement was opposed by top Alaskan officials, including Governor Mike Dunleavy and Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan. 
“Today the Biden Administration announced that it is cancelling legally-issued oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge section designated for oil and gas development. The leases AIDEA holds in ANWR were properly acquired in a sale mandated by Congress,” Dunleavy <a href="https://twitter.com/GovDunleavy/status/1699520164356927930" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> on X. “It’s clear that President Biden needs a refresher on the Constitution’s separation of powers doctrine. Federal agencies don’t get to rewrite laws, and that is exactly what the Department of the Interior is trying to do here.”
The governor added that Alaska would turn to the courts to challenge the Biden administration&#8217;s moves to cut down on oil production. Sullivan said Biden’s actions endangered the energy security of the U.S.

Despite the fact that Biden <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/death-by-a-thousand-cuts-oil-executive-details-how-biden-is-a-drag-on-the-industry" target="_blank" rel="noopener">canceled</a> the Keystone XL pipeline expansion and aggressively pushed green energy, climate activists are still angry at Biden after he <a href="https://apnews.com/article/alaska-arctic-refuge-oil-gas-leases-interior-318dcc3f2d5b104a800bf3ba48e764b7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">allowed</a> the Willow oil project in Alaska’s North Slope to go forward, which could end up yielding 180,000 gallons of oil per day. The decision to end the leases and block drilling comes as gas prices across the country remain high.

A nonprofit watchdog group is suing the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/department-of-the-interior" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Department of the Interior</a> over communications between Secretary <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/deb-haaland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Deb Haaland</a>, her activist daughter, and department officials.
Protect the Public&#8217;s Trust (PPT) filed two lawsuits against the Biden administration on Monday; one against the Interior Department and another against one of its agencies, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Both lawsuits are over an open records request PPT filed with Interior for communications between Haaland’s daughter Somah and the secretary and other department officials, according to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-admin-hit-lawsuits-hiding-communications-involving-cabinet-secretarys-daughter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a>.
Somah is a media organizer for the Pueblo Action Alliance (PAA), a New Mexico environmental group <a href="https://www.puebloactionalliance.org/protectgreaterchaco" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pushing</a> for a moratorium on oil and gas drilling within a 10-mile radius of the Chaco Culture National Historical Park. The ban, which has been picked up and proposed by BLM, has <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-cabinet-members-daughter-lobbying-congress-issue-her-mom-final-say-conflict-interest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">drawn</a> fire from industry and Native American interests.
PAA’s lobbying is part of a broader effort by the Greater Chaco Coalition, a group of environmental organizations working together to lobby D.C. officials to ban fossil fuel development in the Chaco Canyon area. As part of that effort, Somah and other coalition representatives <a href="https://wildearthguardians.org/press-releases/greater-chaco-advocates-travel-dc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">traveled</a> to Washington, D.C., in December to show a film on the dangers of development near the Chaco Culture National Historical Park.
Lawmakers and Interior officials attended the screening and watched a panel of coalition representatives, including Somah, speak on the film.
Somah’s position as an activist and the daughter of the official ultimately in charge of the department she is lobbying is a red flag for an ethical breach, according to PPT Director Michael Chamberlain. PPT has filed open record requests for any communications concerning the film sent between Somah and her secretary mother and other department officials.

“Her daughter’s activism and lobbying efforts certainly have the potential to create the perception in the minds of the public that Secretary Haaland could be conflicted on issues under her authority,” Chamberlain told Fox News. “Further complicating matters is the participation of an organization that claims Somah Haaland among its leadership in the protest that turned into a riot at the Interior headquarters.”
“Each of these items alone would point to the need for DOI to provide more transparency into any relationships and interactions between Somah Haaland and senior Department officials,” added Chamberlain. “Taken together, this need is magnified.”

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/white-house" target="_blank" rel="noopener">White House</a> proposed cuts to the water allotments for a group of states that draw from the Colorado River after negotiations between the states stalemated.
The Colorado River <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/over-40-million-people-rely-on-water-from-the-colorado-river-its-dangerously-close-to-drying-up" target="_blank" rel="noopener">provides</a> water for 40 million Americans across seven states for business, agriculture, and drinking. A two-decades-long drought has strained the river near its breaking point, and officials in the seven states have negotiated for months to cut water allotments to avoid a worst-case scenario.
The negotiations have come to naught so far and the river’s two reservoirs, Lake Powell and Lake Mead, are at risk of dead pooling, the level at which the river will stop flowing and cause millions of Americans to lose water. Before that happens, millions of Americans that rely on hydropower from the Glen Canyon and Hoover dams could be cut off if the water level dips below the benchmark at which the dams’ hydropower plants can run.
The Department of the Interior on Tuesday proposed even cuts of the water allotments of each state, which would override the legal precedent set under a framework of laws known as the “law of the river” that has governed Colorado River usage for about a century, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/11/climate/colorado-river-water-cuts-drought.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Times</a>.
Tommy Beaudreau, the deputy secretary for the Interior Department, said the departure from legal precedent, which in the past has given seniority water rights priority, is warranted considering the changing science around climate. He said the impact of climate change on the river was not considered when the allotments were originally portioned out.
The government’s authority only allowed it to impose cuts on the so-called lower basin states of Arizona, California, and Nevada because of their position downriver. The upper-basin states of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming draw their water before it is stored in lakes Powell and Mead.
The lower-basin states use the greater share of the water from the Colorado River. The upper-basin states have already cut their usage along with the river’s decreasing flow.
Negotiators from Arizona and Nevada have signaled approval of the government’s plan, though Nevada specified that an agreement worked out between the states would be best. California has not yet made a statement on the government’s plan. California holds the majority of seniority water rights under the current legal framework, and negotiators have pushed for a plan that takes that into account.

The cuts that the Colorado River states must make, any way they come out, will be unprecedented. The Colorado River is a major source of water for several major cities. Los Angeles gets about half of its water from the Colorado; Las Vegas draws about 90% of its water from the river. The Bureau of Reclamation has asked the states to work out an agreement that would reduce Colorado River usage by about one-third.
