The town council of Castle Rock outside of Denver has voted unanimously to explore legal action against the city for welcoming more than 42,000 immigrants since December 2022.
Castle Rock Town Councilmember Max Brooks introduced a motion during a September 3 meeting that would direct the town’s attorney to research legal recourse against Denver over a flood of migrants that have entered the city and spread out to surrounding suburbs. Other municipalities are considering joining Castle Rock in fighting Denver’s immigration policies, according to Brooks.
“This isn&#8217;t just a decision that Denver gets to make because it&#8217;s impacting the rest of the Front Range. So the idea is to join with other municipalities and say it&#8217;s time to stop,” Brooks told <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/colorado/news/castle-rock-explores-lawsuit-against-denver-migrant-policies/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CBS News Colorado</a>. “Our town attorney&#8217;s office has already had conversations with the county attorney with Douglas County, already had conversations with the city of Aurora, and also had conversations with the city of Parker.”
Officials from Denver’s surrounding areas have complained about migrants, and sometimes dangerous gang members, spreading out of the city. Officials in Aurora have said that members of Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan-based gang, are wreaking havoc on local communities.

“We currently have entire complexes under gang control — complexes where staff have been beaten up, they&#8217;ve been threatened, their families have been threatened [and] complexes where there are no staff left on the property,” Aurora City Council Member Danielle Jurinsky <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/sanctuary-citys-policies-push-violent-migrant-gang-suburbs-nationwide-problem" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> last month. “These complexes are being run by this Tren de Aragua gang.”
“They start brokering apartments themselves when someone leaves out of fear or whatever. They go in and take pictures of the apartment themselves. Then, I&#8217;ve been told, within hours, a Venezuelan family moves in,” Jurinsky said.
Denver has <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/colorado/news/denvers-new-asylum-seeker-program-provide-rental-assistance-migrants/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">offered</a> immigrants a raft of benefits, including six months of paid housing and a bus ticket to elsewhere in the state or country. The city has planned to spend an estimated $90 million on services for newly arrived migrants who claim to be seeking asylum in the United States.
Castle Rock’s move toward legal action is about changing Denver’s approach to immigration, not about extracting compensation, according to Brooks.
“I don’t want a dime from Denver, I just don’t want them to continue to have a policy that is having a negative impact on the Front Range,” Brooks said.
“You don’t wait until the hurricane is on you to board up your windows and leave town. We understand that there is a storm coming,” he added.

A resident who moved out of the apartment building on Wednesday because of the gang activity told Fox News on the condition of anonymity, &#8220;This is organized. They patrol the property with guns visibly, like they&#8217;re not trying to hide them. There&#8217;s no repercussion. These are ghosts.&#8221; The resident added that gang members are dealing drugs in the building.

TdA members have been known to work throughout the U.S., and one member of the gang, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/illegal-immigrant-charged-with-laken-rileys-murder-is-active-gang-member-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jose Ibarra</a>, was arrested and charged earlier this year for the murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley.
Aurora, which is a suburb of Denver, has been affected by the migrant crisis in Colorado&#8217;s capital. Since December 2022, more than 40,000 illegal immigrants have arrived in Denver, and city officials have cut police, sheriff, and fire department funding to deal with the crisis.

Parts of Aurora, Colorado, a suburb just nine miles east of Denver, are being overtaken by a violent Venezuelan gang, a city official told <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/sanctuary-citys-policies-push-violent-migrant-gang-suburbs-nationwide-problem" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a>.

The Tren de Aragua gang has members across the country and is known for its brutality. One of its members, Jose Ibarra, was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/illegal-immigrant-charged-with-laken-rileys-murder-is-active-gang-member-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">charged</a> with murdering Georgia nursing student Laken Riley. Another Tren de Aragua gang member, Jhonardy Jose Pacheco-Chirino, was arrested after beating a man at an Aurora apartment complex, according to police. He was arrested again after a shooting that injured two men, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/08/25/us-news/denver-tren-de-aragua-gang-violence-spills-over-into-aurora-colorado/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Aurora has <a href="https://archive.ph/3T3SQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sought</a> to stop illegal immigrants from getting bused to the &#8220;non-sanctuary city,&#8221; and the city council passed a resolution pledging that there would be no handouts for migrants in the city. Abe Laydon, a county commissioner in Douglas County — just south of Denver — said that Denver&#8217;s sanctuary city policies still affect the suburbs.
&#8220;Not too long ago, we saw this influx of 40,000 migrants [to Denver],&#8221; Laydon said. &#8220;Douglas County rang the bell and said, &#8216;Look, from a common sense perspective, it&#8217;s impossible that wouldn&#8217;t have a huge impact on resources in the Denver metro area – and it did.&#8221;

Laydon said that Douglas County outlawed unscheduled bus stops and prohibited buses from San Antonio from dropping off migrants in the area. A Colorado state law passed in 2019, however, cripples local officials by preventing them from working directly with Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE).
&#8220;Our local law enforcement would like the ability to communicate with local immigration officials,&#8221; Laydon said. &#8220;We have been apprised that there has absolutely been an increase in property crimes, assault and trafficking, and it&#8217;s specific issues with the cartels coming out of Venezuela.&#8221;
In April, Denver city officials cut police, sheriff, and fire department spending to allocate more funding for the illegal immigrants who have arrived there. To pay for the &#8220;Newcomer Program Strategy,&#8221; Denver Democratic Mayor Mike Johnston announced cuts to police spending by $8.4 million and fire department spending by $2.5 million.

Police in Denver are searching for eight <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/venezuela" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Latino</a> males who were caught on video violently robbing a family-owned and operated jewelry store that has been in business for decades.
The criminals robbed Joyeria El Ruby on Monday afternoon, said shop owner Lidia Tena.
One of the men entered the store first and pretended to be shopping while three more men came in and waited in a cage — which was built with the intent to stop this type of situation from happening.
They were asked to take off their hats and sunglasses before entering the store, but once the cage was opened they pulled guns and stormed the counter. Fox 31 Denver said that customers were held at gunpoint as the criminals stole nearly all of the jewelry.
Several of the employees escaped to the back room where they tried to barricade themselves and hit a panic button, but the thugs broke in and held them at gunpoint and threatened to kill them if they again attempted to hit the panic button. The men repeatedly hit the women.
“I thought they would kill me after hitting me three times and they told me they would kill me and my niece if I moved towards the panic button,” Tena said.
Four more armed men then entered the building with hats and glasses and wearing gloves so that no fingerprints would be left behind which points strongly to these individuals being professional criminals who are linked to organized crime or a drug cartel.

The women who were working in the store said that the Spanish-speaking criminals clearly had Venezuelan accents.

8 Armed Men With ‘Venezuelan Accents’ Violently Rob Denver Jewelry Store

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/denver" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Denver Police Department</a> said this week that a person they shot and killed last week was a transgender individual who tried to attack a police officer with a large knife.
The suspect, 52-year-old Miguel Tapia, a man who claimed that he was a woman, tried to attack a police officer last week with a 7-inch knife, according to body camera footage that was released of the incident.
The shooting happened last Sunday in an intersection when police confronted Tapia and told him to drop what he was holding and to put his hands on his head.
Tapia started aggressively moving toward the police officer with the knife in his hand, at which point two police officers fired tasers at him in an effort to stop him.
When the tasers were unsuccessful, the police officer that he was running after pulled out his pistol and unloaded several shots into the attacker. Another officer also fired at the suspect.

Activists posted records online purporting to be related to the suspect that indicated he had been convicted of various crimes against children.
Police said at a press conference that it was possible that he was also an illegal alien. The Daily Wire has reached out to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for comment about the matter.

An illegal immigrant charged over a fatal car crash in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/colorado" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Colorado</a> last week had previously been deported multiple times, according to immigration authorities.
Ignacio Cruz-Mendoza, a 47-year-old Mexican national, was accused last week of crashing a semi-truck that caused the death of one person and caused another person serious injury. ICE said on Monday that the man had either been deported to or voluntarily returned to Mexico at least 16 times in the past, Denver7 <a href="https://www.denver7.com/news/local-news/semi-driver-in-285-fatal-crash-was-in-u-s-illegally-has-long-history-of-removal-to-mexico-ice" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Mendoza, who initially faced vehicular homicide charges, now faces one count of careless driving resulting in death and three counts of careless driving resulting in injury, <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2024/06/18/ignacio-cruz-mendoza-us-285-crash-fatal-charges/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Denver Post. The illegal immigrant is currently detained on a $50,000 bail in Jefferson County Jail.
The fatal crash on June 11 resulted in the death of 64-year-old Scott Miller and involved Mendoza driving off the road and dumping the pipe and angle iron he was hauling onto five other vehicles. The crash took place on Interstate 285 near Conifer, Colorado.
Colorado State Patrol <a href="https://dailycaller.com/2024/06/18/police-arrest-serially-deported-illegal-immigrant-after-crash-kills-64-year-old-report/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> they believe Mendoza was speeding when he got into the wreck. He was reportedly driving for Monique Trucking.
Mendoza was previously ordered to be deported after he was convicted of drug charges in Oregon back in 2002. At the time of the accident, he was facing another deportation order.

The incident is just the latest in a string of high-profile arrests of illegal immigrants for crimes.
Last weekend, 23-year-old Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, was arrested for the murder of 37-year-old Rachel Morin. Hernandez is accused of murdering Morin, a mother of five, when she was out on a hike in Harford County, Maryland, in August 2023.
Hernandez is suspected of a January 2023 murder in El Salvador and of assaulting a 9-year-old girl in California. According to the Tulsa Police Department, Hernandez “violently assaulted a 9-year-old girl and her mother during a home invasion” in Los Angeles.
On Tuesday, the NYPD arrested an illegal immigrant suspected of tying up and raping a 13-year-old girl in broad daylight in a park in Queens. The suspect is a 25-year-old illegal immigrant from Ecuador who is believed to have entered the United States in 2021, according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/18/us-news/migrant-arrested-for-allegedly-sexually-assaulting-13-year-old-girl-in-nyc-park/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a>.

A group of illegal immigrants in Denver is refusing to relocate from a tent encampment to shelters unless Democratic Mayor Mike Johnston agrees to their list of 13 demands.
They are currently living in tents under a bridge and near train tracks as the Denver Human Services Department attempts to get them into city-funded migrant shelters, Fox 31 <a href="https://kdvr.com/news/local/group-of-migrants-send-denver-mayor-list-of-demands/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The illegal immigrants, however, want the city to agree to numerous provisions for migrants staying in shelters, including allowing them to cook their own meals with &#8220;culturally appropriate ingredients provided by the City&#8221; and giving them free consultations with an immigration lawyer.
&#8220;[T]he City will provide on-going legal support in the form of immigration document clinics &amp; including transportation to relevant court dates,&#8221; the list of demands states.
Jon Ewing, a Denver Human Services official, said the city is concerned about the migrants remaining in the encampment and being exposed to the elements.
“We’ve been offering time and shelter, basically just trying to get families to leave that camp and come inside,” Ewing said. “Which comes with three square meals a day. You can cook your own if you like to.”
Illegal immigrant advocate V Reeves said there isn&#8217;t enough food provided by the city in the shelters, and sometimes the food that is provided is &#8220;spoiled.&#8221;
“There have been so many complaints about the food being spoiled or not being enough and malnutrition amongst children,” Reeves said.

<li>Medical professional visits will happen regularly &amp; referrals/connections for specialty care will be made as needed.</li>
<li>All will receive the same housing support that has been offered to others. They cannot kick people out in 30 days without something stable established.</li>
<li>There needs to be a clear, just process before exiting someone for any reason – including verbal, written &amp; final warnings.</li>
<li>All shelter residents will receive connection to employment support, including work permit applications for those who qualify.</li>
<li>Consultations for each person/family with a free immigration lawyer must be arranged to discuss/progress their cases, &amp; then the City will provide on-going legal support in the form of immigration document clinics &amp; including transportation to relevant court dates.</li>
<li>The City will provide privacy for families/individuals within the shelter.</li>
<li>No more verbal or physical or mental abuse will be permitted from the staff, including no sheriff sleeping inside &amp; monitoring 24/7 – we are not criminals &amp; won’t be treated as such.</li>
<li>Transportation for all children to &amp; from their schools will be provided until they finish in 3 weeks.</li>
<li>No separating families, regardless of if family members have children or not. The camp will stay together.</li>
<li>The City must schedule a meeting with the Mayor &amp; those directly involved in running the Newcomer program ASAP to discuss further improvements &amp; ways to support migrants.</li>
<li>The City must provide all residents with a document signed by a City official in English &amp; Spanish with all of these demands that includes a number to call to report mistreatment.</li>

Two <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/colorado" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Colorado</a> counties are challenging the state’s laws that restrict local law enforcement’s ability to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
On Monday, a <a href="https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/24548867/douglas-county-v-state-of-colorado-complaint-district-court-denver.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lawsuit</a> was filed against Colorado through Democratic Governor Jared Polis by Douglas and El Paso Counties, who argue that the state’s sanctuary city laws are dangerous and unconstitutional. The suit challenges two laws, <a href="https://leg.colorado.gov/sites/default/files/2019a_1124_signed.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HB 19-1124</a> and <a href="https://leg.colorado.gov/sites/default/files/documents/2023A/bills/2023a_1100_enr.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HB 23-1100</a>, which prohibit police from detaining an illegal immigrant based on a civil immigration detainer from an agency like ICE and block local governments from working with the feds to detain illegal immigrants. 
“The nation is facing an immigration crisis. The nation, the state, and local governments need to cooperate and share resources to address this crisis,” the suit, filed in Denver County District Court, says. “Colorado House Bills 19-1124 and 23- 1100 prohibit the necessary cooperation and create dangerous conditions for the State and migrants.”
The suit argues that the Colorado Constitution “forbids the use of constitutional power to prohibit a political subdivision of the State from cooperating or contracting with the federal government.” 
The counties say that the laws should be struck down and they should be allowed to cooperate with federal agencies to enforce immigration law. Douglas County backed Trump by about 7 points in the 2020 election while El Paso County, home to Colorado Springs, went for Trump by 11 points. 
El Paso&#8217;s Board of County Commissioners <a href="https://www.epcsheriffsoffice.com/news-releases/el-paso-county-sheriff-bocc-join-lawsuit-to-overturn-unlawful-immigration-laws-in#:~:text=In%20recent%20years%2C%20the%20Colorado,and%20hold%20accountable%2C%20those%20who" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voted</a> last week 4-0 to authorize the county to join Douglas County&#8217;s litigation against the state. 
“Here in El Paso County, Colorado, we have no choice but to release violent, career criminals back onto our streets, because we have no way to communicate with ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement) and identify undocumented immigrants, or keep them in custody, once local judicial adjudication has been executed,” said Sheriff Joseph Roybal.

Douglas County Commissioner Lora Thomas <a href="https://www.9news.com/article/news/local/local-politics/douglas-el-paso-colorado-immigration-lawsuit/73-63ba8a10-2d8b-41f3-a454-a91ff73de1cd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pointed</a> to the influx of illegal immigrants into Denver as one reason for the lawsuit. 
“The national migrant crisis has forced Denver to continue to cut local services for residents. We have an obligation first to our citizens, and we see what’s happening in Denver as a warning sign to be proactive here in Douglas County,” Douglas County Commissioner Lora Thomas said. 
Last week, Denver announced budget cuts to some department, including the police, sheriff, and fire departments, to allocate more funding for illegal immigrants. Mayor Mike Johnston has regularly asked the Biden administration for more federal dollars for the city to deal with the migrant crisis.

The city of Denver announced budget cuts to some departments this week, including the police, sheriff, and fire departments, to allocate more funding for illegal immigrants who have overwhelmed Colorado&#8217;s capital.
Democratic Denver Mayor Mike Johnston announced the cuts on Wednesday, celebrating the move as a way to avoid &#8220;the worst-case budget cut scenarios.&#8221; The &#8220;<a href="https://www.denvergov.org/Government/Agencies-Departments-Offices/Agencies-Departments-Offices-Directory/Mayors-Office/News/2024/Newcomer-Strategy-Avoids-Budget-Cuts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Newcomer Program Strategy</a>&#8221; is a nearly $90 million budget plan that funds aid and sheltering for illegal immigrants through the rest of 2024, Fox 31 <a href="https://kdvr.com/news/local/denver-introduces-nearly-90m-newcomer-budget-plan-for-migrant-aid/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. To pay for the illegal immigrant plan, the Democrat-run city <a href="https://www.9news.com/article/news/local/2024-services-migrants-budget-cuts-denver-agencies-fund-programs/73-a8654a1f-0a20-4928-9d4d-f8a3c2966719#:~:text=The%20Denver%20Police%20Department%20will,for%20police%20officers%20or%20firefighters.">will cut</a> police spending by $8.4 million and fire department spending by $2.5 million, while the Sheriff&#8217;s Department will be hit with a 2.2% reduction.
“After more than a year of facing this crisis together, Denver finally has a sustainable plan for treating our newcomers with dignity while avoiding the worst cuts to city services,” Johnston said. “So many times we were told that we couldn’t be compassionate while still being fiscally responsible. Today is proof that our hardest challenges are still solvable, and that together we are the ones who will solve them.”
Denver <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/denver-scrambling-to-handle-40000-new-migrants" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scrambled</a> earlier this year to find a way to shelter an estimated 40,000 migrants who had arrived in the city over the course of a few months. The mayor took action to help mitigate the strain on migrant shelters by requiring that migrant families leave a shelter after staying for six weeks.
Johnston&#8217;s office said in January that the migrant influx was “straining capacity” and that “over the past two months, Denver has seen a dramatic uptick in arrivals and is currently sheltering 4,000 people.” The mayor added that the city would need to come up with $100 million to pay for the crisis. Denver, which is a &#8220;sanctuary city,&#8221; followed up weeks later by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/denver-booting-800-migrant-families-from-shelters" target="_blank" rel="noopener">booting</a> around 800 migrant families from overcrowded shelters.
The new city budget plan allocates $51.7 million for migrant shelter and housing, according to Fox 31. Another $9.7 million will go toward &#8220;supportive services,&#8221; including case management and workforce training, and $6 million will be allocated for migrant transportation.
The mayor&#8217;s office took the biggest hit in budget cuts to help pay for the illegal immigration crisis with a 9.6% reduction in spending. Other city departments taking a budget hit include the City Attorney&#8217;s Office, Economic Development, Public Health and Environment, and the Public Library, among others.
Denver&#8217;s &#8220;Newcomer Program Strategy,&#8221; comes as Colorado voters voice their frustration with the crisis at the U.S. southern border as residents listed immigration as the top issue for the 2024 election in a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/poll-colorado-voters-say-immigration-is-the-top-issue-as-2024-election-draws-closer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent poll</a>.

Colorado voters say that immigration is the top issue facing the country ahead of the 2024 election, a recent poll has found.
The <a href="https://www.copollinginstitute.org/research/march-2024-statewide-poll-coloradans-deeply-concerned-about-high-cost-of-living-in-the-state">poll</a> of 632 likely voters, reported by the Colorado Polling Institute and conducted by Democratic pollster Aspect Strategic and Republican pollster New Bridge Strategy, found that 14% of voters said that immigration is the top issue that the state government should address. The issue beat homelessness at 12% and the lack of affordable housing at 11%, which respondents also provided as answers to the open-ended question.
“Immigration emerging as a top issue among voters in Colorado follows trends we are seeing in research nationally,” Republican pollster Lori Wiegel <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2024/04/04/colorado-voters-poll-migrant-crisis-top-issue-immigration/">asserted</a>. President Joe Biden still holds a 10% lead over former President Donald Trump in the state, however, with 49% of respondents saying that they will vote for the Democrat incumbent, with 39% saying they will support Trump in the November presidential election.
The poll comes as Denver has seen a drastic increase in the number of new arrivals, with <a href="https://app.powerbigov.us/view?r=eyJrIjoiNWQ4YjcwZDctODkwNy00YjA4LThlMTktMjM3YjU2NmIwZTRjIiwidCI6IjM5Yzg3YWIzLTY2MTItNDJjMC05NjIwLWE2OTZkMTJkZjgwMyJ9">nearly 41,000 migrants</a> currently being served by the city of <a href="https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/denvercitycolorado,denvercountycolorado/PST045222">just over 700,000</a>. As many as 4,500 migrants were previously residing in the city’s homeless shelters as of January, though the figure has decreased in recent months.

The poll of Colorado voters reflects a wider trend throughout the country, with a recent <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/voters-say-immigration-is-top-issue-facing-country-biden-faces-widespread-disapproval-on-immigration">national poll</a> performed by Harvard Harris and the Center for American Political Studies finding that voters say immigration is the top issue facing the country. The poll also found that Biden has his lowest issue-specific approval rating on immigration, a trend that has persisted for four consecutive months.
Another national poll, <a href="https://apnorc.org/projects/most-favor-hiring-more-border-patrol-agents-and-immigration-judges/">performed</a> by the Associated Press and National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago, found that a majority of Americans want to hire more Border Patrol agents and limit the number of migrants who are allowed to seek asylum.
The findings come as the United States faces an unprecedented border crisis with over <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/2455010/illegal-border-crossers-total-over-10-million-since-biden-inauguration/">10 million</a> crossing the border since Joe Biden took office. There have been over one million illegal immigrant <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/over-one-million-illegal-migrants-encountered-at-southern-border-in-first-six-months-of-fiscal-year-2024">encounters</a> on the southern border in just the first six months of fiscal year 2024. There have also been an estimated <a href="https://cis.org/Arthur/Blockbuster-House-Report-Reveals-How-Badly-Bidens-Broken-Our-Immigration-System">1.7 million illegal immigrant gotaways</a> recorded since Biden took office in 2021. There were 415,000 total reported gotaways for 2018, 2019, and 2020 under the Trump administration.

Denver Public Schools has an &#8220;ethnic studies&#8221; course that teaches ninth graders racial equity and gender ideology, according to a parental rights group.
Parents Defending Education (PDE) said they obtained the <a href="https://defendinged.org/incidents/denver-public-schools-has-mandatory-ethnic-studies-curriculum-for-ninth-grade-students-that-teaches-them-to-embrace-collectivism-over-individualism-teaches-students-that-gender-exists-on-a-spectrum/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">curriculum</a> for the Denver school district&#8217;s ninth grade &#8220;Introduction to Ethnic Studies&#8221; course, which allegedly includes lessons on &#8220;Building a Collective Society&#8221; and &#8220;Intersectionality in Action.&#8221;
Other topics reportedly include “Mapping Identity Through Poetry,” “Beyond the Binary,” “The Intersectionality Lens,” and “Systemic Change.”
Scott Pribble, the district&#8217;s Director of External Communications, said in an email that the course is &#8220;not a required course for any of our students&#8221; and that they have &#8220;not received any concerns from parents.&#8221;
In the collective society lesson, students are asked to &#8220;analyze and critique dominant individualist ideologies in the United States,&#8221; according to PDE.
One lesson reportedly asks students to &#8220;reflect on the 20th century American concepts of the American Dream and the Self-Made Man&#8221; and write a brief summary of a pretend movie that &#8220;captures the essence of the American Dream through an individualist perspective.&#8221;
&#8220;Then, students learn about collectivist values from Indigenous Plant Teachings&#8221; and rewrite their movie summaries to &#8220;integrate collective values.&#8221;
The lesson provides an example of a movie summary: &#8220;In the roaring 20s New York City, a determined young Irish immigrant dockworker, fueled by a passionate love for a wealthy socialite, embarks on a perilous journey to transcend his humble origins and earn her love.&#8221;
The lesson suggests changing that movie summary to: &#8220;In 1920s New York City, a compassionate young Irish immigrant accepts a position as a dockworker, and fueled by his commitment to his community, joins forces with his fellow workers to challenge oppressive class divisions and create a more just and equitable society,&#8221; according to PDE.
Several lessons focus on American Indian culture, including one that asks students to use a Navajo Four Cardinal Directions map to &#8220;design a classroom worldview.&#8221;
Students are also reportedly asked to explore how different representations of an Aztec deity &#8220;helps build deeper understanding of the truth and meaning,&#8221; according to the lesson plan.
The curriculum also has students learn the term &#8220;anti-racism&#8221; and watch an Ibram X. Kendi <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eY4jK__2GsE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a>, PDE reported. That lesson also teaches students the quote, &#8220;In a racist society it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist&#8221; from Angela Davis.
In the unit on gender ideology, students &#8220;analyze statistics on anti-trans politics&#8221; and learn about &#8220;gender fluid cultures,&#8221; according to the group.
The Denver Public Schools <a href="https://www.dpsk12.org" target="_blank" rel="noopener">serves</a> more than 88,000 students at more than 200 schools.

One Colorado city reaffirmed that it is not a sanctuary city as tens of thousands of illegal migrants pour into the state.
The city council of Aurora, which sits just east of Denver, approved a <a href="https://www.auroragov.org/common/pages/DownloadFileByUrl.aspx?key=T33oREoNY3ge58LSFMr%2fYd%2fU2FWC2PnB1ROPA6snV8aUu6H31JX%2bkM9pG%2bZB7rMyAa4hZ1iQthuIFPtGwkEa9eVO76fmceJNQkQSzsEnKODtY4%2bO4toow28JK8TKTca3GLaAd%2f5bKeQPmWeL2OwXMMP4tHqieF66zoVYAG8Qt3dUxonqTtXinZlKajHa1RToiSNb4wuwfq%2fTsy6gLB4Mh8UfrfV56r5jkXDX0RH6%2bhQbmhHk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resolution</a> in a 7-3 vote on Monday demanding that large groups of migrants not be transported there since it is unable to fund new services for migrants or homeless people.
“The City Council affirms remaining a Non-Sanctuary City and asserts the City does not currently have the financial capacity to fund new services related to this crisis and demands that other municipalities and entities do not systematically transport migrants or people experiencing homelessness to the City,” the resolution states.
The resolution also <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2024/02/27/aurora-council-sanctuary-bus-migrants/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">calls</a> on the federal government to “secure our nation’s borders.”
In recent months, Denver has become a hotspot for more than 40,000 migrants, mostly from Venezuela, who began arriving in droves in December, 2022.
Earlier this month, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, a Democrat, announced cuts to the city&#8217;s budget due to the migrant crisis. The DMV and the parks department were some of the first areas of city government affected.
&#8220;Without any federal support, without any work authorization, without changes to policy, we are going to have to make changes to what we can do in terms of our city budget, and what we can do in terms of support for newcomers who have arrived in the city,&#8221; Johnston <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/colorado/news/denver-mayor-cut-dmv-parks-rec-departments-city-deals-with-budget-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
Johnston <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/denver-struggles-cope-40000-migrants-rcna135555" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a> that the city would likely need $100 million over the course of this year to pay for migrant costs such as housing, school, and health care.
Aurora Councilwoman Danielle Jurinsky, who sponsored the resolution, said she views it as inhumane to bus migrants into her city.
“I don’t know if the Denver residents are OK with their rec centers being scaled back and shut down and their hours cut and the DMV shut down every other week now, but here in Aurora, we’re not shutting down our rec centers,” Jurinsky <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2024/02/27/aurora-council-sanctuary-bus-migrants/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “We’re not doing any of that, and we don’t have a county budget to sustain it.”
Another member of Aurora&#8217;s city council, Crystal Murillo, opposed the resolution, saying she is concerned it is &#8220;spreading a narrative of fear that we are pitting groups of marginalized communities, people in need, against one another.&#8221;
Councilwoman Stephanie Hancock, who supported the resolution, said she and her fellow council members were elected to be a &#8220;good steward of your dollars.&#8221;
