President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a> signed a bill into law on Saturday to avoid a default on the federal government’s debt by raising the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/debt-ceiling" target="_blank" rel="noopener">debt ceiling</a>.
The bill, known as the Fiscal Responsibility Act, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/senate-passes-debt-ceiling-bill-to-avert-default-ahead-of-x-date" target="_blank" rel="noopener">will suspend</a> the debt limit until January 2025 and implement restraints on spending that the Congressional Budget Office estimated would reduce budget deficits by $1.5 trillion over the next decade. 
“I just signed into law a bipartisan budget agreement that prevents a first-ever default while reducing the deficit, safeguarding Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and fulfilling our [sacred] obligation to our veterans,” Biden said on Twitter. “Now, we continue the work of building the strongest economy in the world.”

The bill was hashed out through a deal between House Speaker <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kevin-mccarthy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kevin McCarthy</a> (R-CA) and Biden. It passed both the House and the Senate with more Democrat votes in favor than Republican, with some conservative lawmakers saying that it didn’t cut down on spending enough. 
In the House, 149 Republicans joined 165 Democrats in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-passes-mccarthy-biden-debt-ceiling-compromise-bill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voting for</a> the bill, while in the Senate 17 Republicans joined 46 Democrats in supporting the measure. 
The bill was supported by leadership in both parties, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and McCarthy in the House.

The bill was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/a-disaster-republican-senators-voice-opposition-to-mccarthy-biden-debt-ceiling-deal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">strongly opposed</a> by many Republican senators, including Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY).

“I think the Biden-McCarthy debt deal is a disaster for the country. It does not significantly change the trajectory of the debt. Each year we’ll spend more money and the debt will grow $4 trillion in two years. It’s not very conservative,” Paul <a href="https://www.kktv.com/video/2023/05/31/sen-rand-paul-reacts-deal-debt-ceiling/">told</a> reporters this week.
In the House, the bill was opposed by many in the House Freedom Caucus, who took issue with many aspects of the deal, including the provision that punts the debt ceiling into 2025. 
McCarthy declared the deal a win for conservatives. “Maybe it doesn’t do everything for everyone, but this is a step in the right direction that no one thought that we would be able to today,” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/speaker-kevin-mccarthy-touts-wins-conservatives-secured-in-tentative-debt-ceiling-agreement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">McCarthy said</a>. “I’ll debate this bill with anybody. Is it everything I wanted? No, because we don’t control all of it. But it is the biggest rescission in history. It is the biggest cut Congress has ever voted for in that process.”

The Senate passed bipartisan legislation Thursday night that aims to avert a U.S. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/debt-ceiling" target="_blank" rel="noopener">debt default</a>.
After a series of amendments failed, the upper chamber voted 63-36 to send <a href="https://rules.house.gov/bill/118/hr-fiscal-responsibility-act" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Fiscal Responsibility Act</a> to the White House where President Joe Biden is expected to sign the bill. Senate leaders quickly lauded the bill&#8217;s passage while taking shots at each other&#8217;s party.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released a <a href="https://www.republicanleader.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/senate-passes-bipartisan-debt-limit-agreement-" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> that said: “Thanks to House Republicans’ efforts, the Fiscal Responsibility Act avoids the catastrophic consequences of default and begins to curb Washington Democrats’ addiction to reckless spending that grows our nation’s debt.&#8221;
The legislation, which arose out of an agreement struck between White House officials and Speaker <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kevin-mccarthy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kevin McCarthy</a> (R-CA), comes ahead of what has become known as the &#8220;X-date&#8221; on June 5, when Treasury Secretary Janet Yelen predicted reserves could run out.
The Treasury Department has been enacting “extraordinary measures” since earlier this year when the United States hit its statutory limit of roughly $31.4 trillion and warned of dire economic consequences if the country was unable to reach a deal to lift the debt ceiling.
The legislation <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/29/business/debt-ceiling-agreement.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suspends the debt limit until January 2025</a> and implements restraints on spending that the Congressional Budget Office estimated would <a href="https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/2023-05/hr3746_Letter_McCarthy.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reduce budget deficits</a> by $1.5 trillion over the next decade. As noted by McConnell in his statement, the bill also begins &#8220;to reform the infrastructure permitting process, finally rescind unspent COVID dollars, and cut spending at the IRS.&#8221;
While the bill did receive a bipartisan consensus, as underscored by a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-passes-mccarthy-biden-debt-ceiling-compromise-bill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vote in the House on Wednesday</a> with more than 100 Republicans and Democrats each supporting the measure, there were detractors in both parties.

Conservatives generally argued that the bill did not go far enough in reducing spending while leftist lawmakers pushed back on certain provisions, such as the <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4028920-progressives-vent-frustration-as-debt-limit-bill-nears-final-vote/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expansion of some requirements for food stamps</a>.
&#8220;No one gets everything they want in a negotiation, but make no mistake: this bipartisan agreement is a big win for our economy and the American people,&#8221; Biden said in a statement Thursday evening.
The president said he looks forward to signing the bill into law &#8220;as soon as possible&#8221; and addressing the American people on Friday.

This week, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and President Joe Biden cut a deal to raise the debt limit. The breakthrough came after three months of Biden pledging not to even negotiate over the debt limit. Instead, Biden was forced to concede to a 1% cap on increases for non-military spending, a cutback on IRS funding, a clawback of some unspent COVID allocations, and the addition of work requirements for some federal aid. The compromise deal was indeed far less than House Republicans had demanded, as Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) tweeted, “After factoring in a small cut to discretionary spending over the next 2 yrs, we are still talking about ~$6T more or less in spending bc of large increases in spending elsewhere….Govt grew massively over the past 3 years. This growth was supposed to be emergency funding only during COVID. During this time, govt grew 40% or by $2 trillion from 2019 to 2023. We went from spending just over $4T to spending just over $6T.”
Every word of that critique is true. Compared to conservative ideals, the compromise bill is indeed a flaming bag of fiscal manure. But conservative ideals weren’t on the table. Biden is the president. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) — thanks in large part to the tender 2020 ministrations of President Trump in the Georgia Senate runoffs and his further interference in the 2022 Senate races in Georgia, Arizona, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania — is still the Senate majority leader. This means that Republicans were never going to get a big win on budgetary matters.
For that matter, Republicans couldn’t even get a big win on budgetary matters from 2016 to 2018, when they controlled both houses of Congress and Trump was actually president. In fact, Trump campaigned in 2016 against changes to entitlement programs, which represent the biggest driver of our national spending addiction — some 62% of federal spending annually. Combine that spending with 10% of our spending on net interest and another 13% or so on defense spending, and the discretionary outlays at issue represent under $1 trillion. That’s a lot of money, to be sure, but making serious cuts to that number would still put our budget in the $5 trillion range.
The reality is that our budgetary debates are generally about shifting deck chairs on the fiscal Titanic. By 2053, we will be dedicating in excess of 21% of our national budget to debt service alone. Mandatory spending will constitute 58% of our spending. We aren’t going to cut our way out of this problem by targeting discretionary spending in the main.
But nobody will touch the real drivers of our budgetary bloat and economic stagnation — Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. To do so would risk the wrath of entrenched interests in the United States. So instead, we’ll simply increase the size and scope of federal spending, placing an unsustainable burden on our economy, then eventually mandating vastly increased taxes or serious austerity measures. There is no third path forward.
Our politicians know this. But they’re in the business of kicking cans down the road while posturing over the placement of the deck chairs. The iceberg looms, but their re-election efforts rely almost completely on ignoring its presence as we bear down, full speed, on our fiscal doom.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the debt ceiling compromise <a href="https://docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/20230529/BILLS-118hrPIH-fiscalresponsibility.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bill</a> on Wednesday that suspends the $31 trillion debt limit until a lame-duck session after the 2024 presidential election.
After an hour of debate, lawmakers advanced House Speaker Kevin McCarthy&#8217;s (R-CA) Fiscal Responsibility Act, a debt ceiling deal made with President Joe Biden that caused 71 Republicans and 46 Democrats to oppose the legislation. The final vote was 314 to 117 — 149 Republicans joining 165 Democrats.
&#8220;We&#8217;re finally bending the curve on discretionary spending because of this bill, and we&#8217;re doing it while at the same time raising our national defense and our veterans fully funded, with Social Security and Medicare preserved,&#8221; McCarthy said in a speech on the House floor, adding, &#8220;That is a major victory.&#8221;
After weeks of negotiations, Biden and McCarthy reached an &#8220;agreement in principle&#8221; over Memorial weekend.
Biden said the passage is a &#8220;critical step forward&#8221; to prevent a first-ever national economic default while touting the agreement&#8217;s Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid protections.
&#8220;Tonight, the House took a critical step forward to prevent a first-ever default and protect our country&#8217;s hard-earned and historic economic recovery,&#8221; Biden said, according to <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/live-blog/debt-ceiling-vote-live-updates-house-will-take-biden-mccarthy-plan-ton-rcna86870" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC News</a>. &#8220;This budget agreement is a bipartisan compromise. Neither side got everything it wanted. That&#8217;s the responsibility of governing.&#8221;
&#8220;It protects critical programs that millions of hardworking families, students, and veterans count on,&#8221; Biden said. &#8220;I have been clear that the only path forward is a bipartisan compromise that can earn the support of both parties. This agreement meets that test.&#8221;
Leading the GOP charge against the compromise, which would suspend the debt limit until January 2025 in exchange for various restraints on spending, was the conservative House Freedom Caucus, which views the agreement as being too watered down and weak on spending cuts.

The bill now heads to the Senate, the members of which expect to take some immediate procedural steps. Biden has urged lawmakers to pass the bill before the U.S. defaults on its debt on June 5.

A provision in the <a href="https://docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/20230529/BILLS-118hrPIH-fiscalresponsibility.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023</a>, which arose out of negotiations between the White House and Speaker <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kevin-mccarthy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kevin McCarthy</a> (R-CA), aims to expedite the completion of the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP), which stretches over 300 miles from <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/west-virginia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">West Virginia</a> to southern Virginia.
&#8220;Last summer, I introduced legislation to complete the Mountain Valley Pipeline. I am pleased Speaker McCarthy and his leadership team see the tremendous value in completing the MVP to increase domestic energy production and drive down costs across America and especially in West Virginia,&#8221; <a href="https://www.manchin.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/icymi-manchin-secures-mvp-in-debt-ceiling-agreement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Manchin said</a> in a statement.
&#8220;I am proud to have fought for this critical project and to have secured the bipartisan support necessary to get it across the finish line,&#8221; he added.
Under the debt ceiling legislation, federal agencies are directed to authorize outstanding permits for the pipeline. The bill also dictates that no court shall have jurisdiction to review their actions. Any challenges to this provision would be decided by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, a shift away from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit that has issued a ruling <a href="https://www.wboy.com/news/west-virginia/mountain-valley-pipelines-water-permit-blocked-by-federal-court/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">holding up constriction</a> of the pipeline.
The MVP website says total project work for the pipeline was <a href="https://www.mountainvalleypipeline.info/overview/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">about 94% complete</a> as of spring 2023.
The White House agreed to include the pipeline language in the bill to make good on a commitment to accelerate energy infrastructure permitting as part of an arrangement with Manchin to secure his support for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-signs-740-billion-inflation-reduction-act" target="_blank" rel="noopener">last year&#8217;s Inflation Reduction Act</a>, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/05/31/debt-deal-mountain-valley-pipeline/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to The Washington Post</a>. &#8220;It was going to move forward with or without this bill,&#8221; White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Tuesday.
Environmental groups are unhappy with the MVP provision being tucked into the debt ceiling bill.
“The Sierra Club calls on Congress to reject this deal and swiftly pass a clean bill,&#8221; Sierra Club executive director Ben Jealous <a href="https://www.sierraclub.org/press-releases/2023/05/sierra-club-calls-congress-reject-bad-debt-limit-deal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in a statement</a>. &#8220;Any deal that attempts to expedite the fracked gas Mountain Valley Pipeline, that rolls back bedrock environmental protections, and makes life harder for workers and families already struggling is a bad deal for the country.&#8221;
The bill is expected to get a full House vote Wednesday evening, and if it passes, the legislation will head to the Senate for approval. But there is some opposition to the MVP provision among lawmakers, including Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), who plans to offer an amendment to remove it, according to his office.

“Senator Kaine is extremely disappointed by the provision of the bill to greenlight the controversial Mountain Valley Pipeline in Virginia, bypassing the normal judicial and administrative review process every other energy project has to go through,” a Kaine spokesperson <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/4026806-manchin-pipeline-in-debt-ceiling-deal-prompts-democratic-pushback/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told The Hill</a>.

As a deal hashed out between President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a> and House Speaker <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kevin-mccarthy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kevin McCarthy</a> (R-CA) to avoid a U.S. debt default makes its way through <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/congress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Congress</a>, several Republican senators have already come out against the bill, saying that it does not go far enough to cut spending. 
Those opposed to the deal, known as the <a href="https://rules.house.gov/bill/118/hr-fiscal-responsibility-act" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fiscal Responsibility Act</a>, include Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), and Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), while others have expressed concerns about the bill in its current form. 
“I think the Biden-McCarthy debt deal is a disaster for the country. It does not significantly change the trajectory of the debt. Each year we’ll spend more money and the debt will grow $4 trillion in two years. It’s not very conservative,” Paul <a href="https://www.kktv.com/video/2023/05/31/sen-rand-paul-reacts-deal-debt-ceiling/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> reporters this week. 
Paul added that he planned on introducing a “conservative alternative” to the deal, which <a href="https://www.paul.senate.gov/dr-rand-paul-announces-conservative-alternative-to-biden-mccarthy-debt-deal/#:~:text=WASHINGTON%2C%20D.C.%20%E2%80%93%20Today%2C%20U.S.,responsible%20reforms%20and%20necessary%20cuts." target="_blank" rel="noopener">would implemen</a>t a $500 billion hike on the debt ceiling to allow Congress more time to negotiate, put caps on total spending, and mandate that increases in federal outlays cannot exceed increases in federal revenue. 
Lee previously <a href="https://twitter.com/BasedMikeLee/status/1661716721575804928" target="_blank" rel="noopener">promised</a> to use any procedural tool necessary to “impede” a debt ceiling deal that he believed did not cut spending enough, and he has voiced opposition to the agreement as it currently stands. 
“I believe McCarthy was misled, not malicious in signing onto this deal. But the deal simply does not do what its proponents claim it does — not even close. It’s time to go back to the drawing board or, even better, go back to what the House already passed,” Lee <a href="https://twitter.com/BasedMikeLee/status/1663666847697207296" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. 
Cruz <a href="https://twitter.com/tedcruz/status/1662883736386404352" target="_blank" rel="noopener">referred</a> to the deal as a “blank check” for Biden, saying that it gave Democrats “$4 trillion things” that they wanted. Hawley <a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article275902901.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the Kansas City Star that he opposed the deal because it didn’t address America’s trade deficit with China. 
“I think until we get serious about that, we can talk about fiddling with this or that set of numbers but until we get serious about really correcting that imbalance and bringing back jobs and industry, we’re not going to make the change that we need to see,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ohio Republican Senator J.D. Vance <a href="https://twitter.com/JDVance1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> he was a “firm no” to the proposal in its current form, and South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham <a href="https://twitter.com/LindseyGrahamSC/status/1663245067509694477?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expressed</a> concern over spending cuts in the deal. 
The McCarthy-Biden agreement <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/debt-ceiling-bill-house-rules-committee-vote/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">advanced past</a> the House Rules Committee in a 7-6 vote on Tuesday afternoon, with key conservatives Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) and Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) voting against and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) voting in favor. 
House leadership has expressed confidence that they will have enough votes to get the deal through the lower chamber though it will face opposition from members of the House Freedom Caucus, meaning it will likely require Democrat votes to pass.
McCarthy has acknowledged the bill&#8217;s detractors but said it was the best they could do with a Democrat-controlled Senate and presidency.
“Maybe it doesn’t do everything for everyone, but this is a step in the right direction that no one thought that we would be able to today,” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/speaker-kevin-mccarthy-touts-wins-conservatives-secured-in-tentative-debt-ceiling-agreement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">McCarthy said</a>. “I’ll debate this bill with anybody. A third member opposed to the deal, Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC), put his fellow GOP colleagues on notice. &#8220;This is a career-defining vote for every Republican,&#8221; he said.

Under the current House rules, only one member is required to force a vote that could remove the speaker, however, a simple majority is needed for it to succeed.

The legislation faces its first major test in the House Rules Committee on Tuesday where already dozens of amendments have been <a href="https://twitter.com/Olivia_Beavers/status/1663620059548221441" target="_blank" rel="noopener">offered by Republicans and Democrats alike</a>.
Barring any surprise hold-ups in the rules panel, a full House vote could happen as soon as Wednesday. At least 20 Republicans have rejected the deal, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/30/debt-ceiling-deal-updates.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to CNBC</a>, which means several Democrats will need to get on board for the compromise to advance if the GOP holdouts do not change their stance.
While there has been some <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12133525/Rep-Jayapal-Dem-leadership-worry-progressives-supporting-Bidens-debt-ceiling-deal.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dismay voiced</a> within leftist circles about the agreement, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said on Tuesday that Democrats will be watching whether the GOP can muster at least 150 votes, which would be about two-thirds of their conference. &#8220;Democrats are committed to making sure that we do our part and avoid a default,&#8221; <a href="https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/us-debt-ceiling-deadline-talks-05-30-23/h_6ed28d53e3df5b68a5b6265b2eee2c4d" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he added</a>, per CNN.
If the legislation passes the lower chamber, the bill also needs to be approved by the Democrat-led Senate before reaching Biden for a signature. The arrangement would claw back some $30 billion in pandemic relief funds, roughly matching the $41 billion cut from federal spending in the first year of the bill. Nancy Mace Is A ‘No’ On Debt Ceiling Deal

Many top conservatives slammed the bipartisan agreement reached between President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden">Joe Biden</a> and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy over the weekend that is expected to prevent the U.S. from defaulting on its debt.
While the details of the agreement are still being ironed out, and congressional leaders still have to convince their Members to vote for it, some of the top Republicans in Washington, D.C., are not happy with the agreement.
&#8220;There are members of the GOP claiming Democrats got nothing from the &#8216;deal.&#8217; Oh really? 1) An uncapped debt ceiling with an expiration date &#8211; worth approximately $4 trillion…? 2) basically no cuts &#8211; a freeze at bloated 2023 spending level?&#8221; Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), a House Freedom Caucus member, tweeted. &#8220;ZERO claw back of the $1.2 Trillion &#8216;inflation reduction act&#8217; crony giveaways to elite leftists for grid-destroying unreliable energy…? 4) 98% of the IRS expansion left fully in place…? 5) no work requirements for Medicaid? &#8211; &amp; only age adjustments for TANF/SNAP…?&#8221;
&#8220;No REINS act statutory requirement for congress to approve huge regulations &#8211; just an &#8216;administrative&#8217; paygo that the administration will get to enforce? 7) No border security!! &#8211; &amp; a deal allowing them to avoid policy riders in the fall… 8) more…&#8221; he added.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) echoed Lee&#8217;s tweet, writing: &#8220;Fake conservatives agree to fake spending cuts. Deal will increase mandatory spending ~5%, increase military spending ~3%, and maintain current non-military discretionary spending at post-COVID levels. No real cuts to see here. Conservatives have been sold out once again!&#8221;
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) responded to the following quote from McCarthy: &#8220;Right now, the Democrats are very upset. The one thing [Hakeem Jeffries] told me, there is nothing in the bill for them – there is not one thing in the bill for Democrats.&#8221;
&#8220;He’s right. There’s not &#8216;one thing&#8217; for Dems. There are $4 trillion things—a blank check—for Democrats,&#8221; Cruz responded. &#8220;Plus 87,000 things: new IRS agents to harass Americans. All in exchange for eliminating virtually ALL of the House’s spending cuts.&#8221;

Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) added, &#8220;This pretty much says it all. Democrats got everything they wanted with this bill and don’t have to defend their reckless spending prior to the 2024 election. It’s a win for them.&#8221;

Top Conservatives Slam McCarthy-Biden Agreement: ‘With Republicans Like These, Who Needs Democrats?’

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) touted victories that conservatives secured over the weekend as lawmakers reached a last-minute agreement to avoid the U.S. defaulting on its debt.
McCarthy told Shannon Bream on Fox News&#8217; &#8220;Fox News Sunday&#8221; that most Republicans were excited by the agreement because lawmakers were able to cut spending for the first time in a long time.
McCarthy noted that the agreement was especially impressive considering Republicans were able to secure it despite the fact that President Joe Biden said he would not negotiate.
&#8220;Maybe it doesn&#8217;t do everything for everyone, but this is a step in the right direction that no one thought that we would be able to today,&#8221; McCarthy said. &#8220;I&#8217;ll debate this bill with anybody. Is it everything I wanted? No, because we don&#8217;t control all of it. But it is the biggest rescission in history. It is the biggest cut Congress has ever voted for in that process.&#8221;
McCarthy touted the agreement during a brief press conference with reporters on Saturday evening and another on Sunday morning.
&#8220;We still have a lot of work to do, but I believe this is an agreement in principle that is worthy of the American people,” McCarthy said. “It has historic reductions in spending, consequential reforms that will lift people out of poverty into the workforce, [and] rein in government overreach. There are no new taxes, no new government programs…”
McCarthy said he expects the text of the bill to be posted on Sunday, with a vote to be held on Wednesday.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that the federal government could default on June 5 if an agreement isn’t finalized. “We now estimate that Treasury will have insufficient resources to satisfy the government’s obligations if Congress has not raised or suspended the debt limit by June 5,” Yellen stated.
