Forget the news cycle and the savagery of social media and book an extended vacation for your mind with Dana Perino’s debut rom-com “<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Purple-State-Novel-Dana-Perino/dp/0063486563">Purple State</a>.” It serves all the thrilling crushes, heartwarming moments, and homespun comfort you could ask for, and I’m calling every politico, uptown baddie, horse girl, PSL babe, and farmers market sis out there: This one’s for you. 
This romantic romp skirts the “Fifty Shades” stuff and keeps things suitable for work — apart from the intoxicating smell of a new boyfriend’s T-shirt. By the last line, I was tearing up and wishing for a hundred more pages.
Here’s the setup. Three New York City besties known as The Crew (Dorothy “Dot” Clark, Mary Russo, and Harper Lee Adler) say goodbye to the Big Apple for a year to pitch in on a Democratic election in normie Cedar Falls, Wisconsin. While they’re convinced they’ll miss the hustle and bustle of the city, they’re equally maxed out on the usual: accidentally flirting with guys who play for the other team, struggling to afford life, and feeling stuck in their careers.
So, over cocktails, they agree to one last wild adventure together. A temporary respite from their “what am I doing with my life” era. Everything sounds like a good idea after a glass of sangria.
Once they settle into their new digs just outside of Milwaukee, things get real — and covered in manure. Maybe you can take a girl out of the big city, but can you take the big city out of the girl? The Crew grow to appreciate the Midwest charms of indie bookshops, restaurants with quaint names like “Cocoa and Cabernet,” and locals-only wisdom, but as they count down the months until their return to normal life, unexpected connections with three of Cedar Falls’ most eligible bachelors make things a little complicated. The hot, handy guy-on-a-farm aesthetic only cranks up the heat.
“Purple State” is the fifth release from Dana Perino and her first fictional work. According to my coworkers who saw me flipping through pages, eating up every word like an AMC <a href="https://www.amctheatres.com/perfectly-popcorn/megabag">MegaBag</a> of movie popcorn, there’s no shortage of love around here for the Fox News commentator and New York Times bestselling author. After the third time I heard “love Dana Perino,” I looked up to see if Dana was standing behind me. 
I’m also a fan, but I’m not making commission on every sale of “Purple State.” <a href="https://youtu.be/eMEnNRKallY?t=290">I’m just a girl</a>, standing in front of a book, asking you to love it. So here’s my honest take: Don’t overthink it. Sink into this breezy beach read like a pumpkin spice hot tub topped with apple pie cold foam and, if you’re a city gal, indulge in the quaint comfort of rural life.
Hallmark movie energy abounds. I admit to openly rejecting saccharine hot-cocoa-and-mittens meet-cutes — and then wrapping myself like a burrito in my duvet while wishing my boyfriend were stringing Christmas lights around the town square he secretly flooded with water so it could be an ice skating rink. As Mary Russo notes, “Cedar Falls? Are you serious — that’s a real place, not a Hallmark movie town?”
Descriptions of a dairy barn as &#8220;pungent&#8221; reminded me of childhood sleepovers at my friend’s family farm when we fed young calves from giant milk bottles and rode the moving feed trough, pretending to “interview” them, until I could no longer stomach the stench. (I was a &#8216;burbs girlie.) Never mind the one time I witnessed the birth of a calf. Let’s just say I never wanted to grow up to be a veterinarian. 
But please show me the ice-cold soul who can resist the Cedar Falls harvest festival on a perfectly crisp autumn morning. With everyone holding “steaming mugs of apple cider,” a pie-eating contest, and a live band with a banjo, it’s so dang cozy, you could fall in love with the nearest stop sign. 
Still, Dana doesn’t leave the brunch-and-bodega crowd behind. Her depictions of New York City outline a delicate tattoo on the hearts of anyone who ever dreamed of living it up in a hand-me-down loft and zipping all over town with her dream guy, toasting cocktails with girlfriends at <a href="https://joannenyc.com/">Joanne Trattoria</a> in real life. 
“On the one hand, she pictured herself in a corner office at the firm, having made partner by the age of thirty,” Dana writes of Dot. Describing her high-rise apartment fantasy, with a wardrobe of gorgeous clothes and no money problems, Dana continues, “She’d throw dinner parties, donate to the Met, and still make it to Sunday supper at her parents’ house.” Like some kind of Carrie Bradshaw utopia, it’s that impossible dream that makes it hard to let go. 
For those of us living in our own purple states of varying kinds, Dana also offers a soft landing where no one side feels too extreme, or “right.” With everyone able to maintain civil conversations and keep their priorities in order, the push and pull between political ideals provides the background music to relationships and daily routines. Like most of us do in real life, we leave the crazy stuff for the internet.
I mention how much everyone loves Dana Perino because that’s what inspired me to dive a little deeper on the author. I soon recognized her long, happy marriage to her English husband, <a href="https://people.com/dana-perino-opens-up-marriage-peter-mcmahon-exclusive-11731621">Peter McMahon,</a> mirrored in the characters who own the Cedar Falls bookstore (but she’s British; he’s American). Having no kids of their own, the fictional couple dishes out sage advice at just the right moment. Like I imagine Dana and Peter do.
The dog on the jacket cover also looks exactly like Dana’s copper-colored vizsla, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/dana-perino-our-dogs-remind-us-lifes-sweetest-truth">Percy</a>. That kind of thing, and the subtle shoutout to Dana’s Fox show “The Five” and Greg Gutfeld, personalizes the story. 
Not gonna lie, I found some scenes to be a touch unbelievable, and a few of the jokes land like soft-serve vanilla that falls off the cone and onto the floor. (These are New Yorkers; they need quick-witted dialogue with bite.) And a surprise HGTV-style makeover doesn’t quite pay off with the emotional reveal. I guess not everything can be “Fixer Upper.”
But I don’t care. It’s almost summer reading season. Treat yourself to “Purple State” and yet another reason to love Dana Perino.

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough waded into the ongoing spat that began with Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and Fox News anchor Dana Perino over the governor&#8217;s recent attempts to mimic and mock President Donald Trump&#8217;s social media posts via X.
Scarborough echoed Perino&#8217;s sentiments during Wednesday&#8217;s broadcast, referring to Newsom&#8217;s efforts as &#8220;embarrassing.&#8221; The California governor had made a series of posts on X attacking Trump and other Republicans in all capital letters, including calling them made-up nicknames.

Fox News anchor Dana Perino issued a warning to Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA), questioning his recent behavior on social media. &#8220;You&#8217;re making a fool of yourself. Stop it!&#8221; she said.

Probably why all the people in my life who aren&#8217;t political junkies keep reaching out to say they don&#8217;t know much about Newsom but think the tweets are hilarious. Humor and mockery can be quite effective!&#8221; he claimed.
Perino responded by saying that if Newsom&#8217;s play worked and he became the 2028 Democratic nominee, she&#8217;d buy Favreau dinner.

One former White House Press Secretary has a few words of advice for President Joe Biden: &#8220;cancel the press conference.&#8221;
Fox News anchor Dana Perino, who served as press secretary to former President George W. Bush, suggested that Biden — whose recent struggles and apparent cognitive decline have been front and center since his disastrous first debate with former President Donald Trump  — would not be best served by another public attempt at clean-up.
Referencing a scheduled news conference Biden has planned for Thursday — two weeks to the day since the debate — Perino said that Biden was likely to be flooded with questions that he thus far has not seemed prepared to answer.
&#8220;I’d cancel tomorrow’s press conference,&#8221; Perino said in a post to X. &#8220;Save the embarrassment of the questions he will get. Provide him dignified space to absorb what’s happening.&#8221;

Matt Whitlock raised another potential sticking point, however, asking how anyone could justify keeping President Biden in office until January if they were ready to pull him out of a press conference because they didn&#8217;t believe he could handle it.

Fox News anchor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/dana-perino" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dana Perino</a> criticized President Joe Biden and his White House staffers over their refusal to give real answers in a professional setting to questions that the press — and, by extension, the American people — are asking.
Perino, who hosts &#8220;America&#8217;s Newsroom&#8221; alongside Bill Hemmer, was responding to a clip of the president as he was about to depart the White House aboard Marine One, and had stopped briefly to answer a few questions over the noise of the chopper.
&#8220;I’ve done all I can do,&#8221; Biden said in response to a question about the ongoing chaotic scene at the southern border, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/not-true-fox-news-reporter-busts-biden-claim-that-he-needs-border-deal-to-take-executive-action" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claiming that he had no authority</a> to act unless Congress moved forward with a bipartisan deal. &#8220;Give me the power. At the GOP presidential debate on Wednesday night, moderator Dana Perino channeled the TV show &#8220;Survivor,&#8221; asking the candidates who “should be voted off the island.” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ripped the question, eliciting applause, saying it was disrespectful to the candidates on stage and a distraction from talking about the future of the country, while former New Jersey governor Chris Christie bluntly stated it should be former President Trump, since he had not shown enough respect for GOP voters to show up.
“It’s now obvious that if you all stay in the race, former President Trump wins the nomination,” Perino stated, referring to the fact that so many candidates were splitting the vote. “None of you have indicated that you’re dropping out. So which one of you on stage tonight should be voted off the island? Please use your marker to write on the notepad in front of you. 15 seconds, starting now. Of the people on the stage, who should be — I’m absolutely serious.”
“With all due respect, we’re here. We’re happy to debate,” DeSantis declared. “I think that’s disrespectful to my fellow competitors. Let’s talk about the future of the country.”
“If you won’t answer that question, let me ask you this one,” Perino persisted. “What is your mathematical path, Governor DeSantis, in order to try to beat President Trump, who has a commanding and enduring lead in this race?”
“Polls don’t elect presidents. Voters elect presidents,” DeSantis asserted. “And we’re gonna take the case to the people in these early states. We’re gonna do it in a state by state direction, and why? Because as Reagan said in his day, ‘This is our time for choosing.’ We are not getting a mulligan on the 2024 election; Republicans have lost three straight elections in a row; we were supposed to have a red wave with inflation at 9%; it crashed and burned. Not in Florida, it didn’t; we delivered in Florida. And so we’ve gotta choose right; we’ve gotta win.”
Co-moderator Stuart Varney then turned to Christie, remarking that he did see Christie write something down.
“No, but I’ll certainly tell you,” Christie said, as the audience laughed. “Look: I think I’ve been the only one on this stage who’s been clear about this: I vote Donald Trump off the island right now. And the reason I vote him off the island: Every person on this stage has shown the respect for Republican voters to come here and express their views honestly, candidly, and directly, and to take your questions honestly. I have respect for every man and woman on this stage —”
Seeing Vivek Ramaswamy trying to interrupt, Christie said, “Vivek, put your hand down for a moment, would you,” eliciting laughter, then continued, “I still got time, dude.”
“Look, this guy (Trump) has not only divided our party, he’s divided families all over this country, he’s divided friends all over this country &#8230; he needs to be voted off this island and he needs to be taken out of this process,” he concluded.
Ramaswamy did not answer Perino’s question, instead praising Trump and saying the America First agenda “does not belong to one man.”

During the Fox News&#8217; &#8220;The Five&#8221; on Monday, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/greg-gutfeld">Gutfeld</a> didn&#8217;t hold back his thoughts about the publicity stunt as the network showed footage of global warming protestors vandalizing one of the world&#8217;s most famous pieces of art at a museum in London.
&#8220;Let&#8217;s not show it,&#8221; Gutfeld can be overheard saying. &#8220;Don&#8217;t show it.&#8221;
One of the hosts, Jessica Tarlov, states, &#8220;no, I don&#8217;t think we even have it,&#8221; as the network played the clip of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/climate-change">activists</a> vandalizing the famous painting with cans of tomato soup, as <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-global-warming-protesters-vandalize-one-of-worlds-most-iconic-art-masterpieces">The Daily Wire</a> previously reported.

&#8220;We should be able to vandalize their belongings,&#8221; the host told the panel. &#8220;Like, if they got a smart phone, which they all do &#8230; you confiscate, you step on it. That&#8217;s a couple hundred bucks. Or you go to their house. You find out where they sleep and you just dump a bunch of milk in their house.&#8221;
&#8220;Because you know, I don&#8217;t like being played,&#8221; Gutfeld aded. &#8220;That&#8217;s what they&#8217;re doing. They are playing the media on this &#8230; I&#8217;d hate to be their parents.&#8221;

Fox News host <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/dana-perino" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dana Perino</a> issued a stark warning Wednesday about the environmental, social, and governance (<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/esg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ESG</a>) movement affecting corporate America and the culture more broadly.
The system has been <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/esg-the-invisible-fist-of-the-economy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">criticized</a> as a tool to force Left-wing politics and racial and gender quotas on corporations, even at the expense of their shareholders.
&#8220;ESG forces companies to prioritize political causes over their shareholders,&#8221; Perino asserted on &#8220;The Five.&#8221; &#8220;That&#8217;s what it does.&#8221;
&#8220;And there&#8217;s a lot of commentary now about the &#8216;E&#8217; part ESG, the environmental part,&#8221; the former White House press secretary continued. &#8220;I think the &#8216;S,&#8217; the social part, is also really interesting, because, for example, if a company does not take — doesn&#8217;t allow for reimbursement of travel for an abortion, the employees at that company might declare it a &#8216;hostile work environment&#8217; and in the ESG guidelines you can get docked and that hurts the company.&#8221;

Perino was not the only one on &#8220;The Five&#8221; to warn against the movement.
&#8220;Here&#8217;s the bottom line: companies should be concerned about their bottom line,&#8221; Judge Jeanine Pirro remarked. &#8220;They have a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders, to their bottom line. And all this other stuff, they may feel good about it, it has nothing to do with their bottom line.&#8221;

Greg Gutfeld, too, said ESG is putting customers and shareholders second to Left-wing politics. 
ESG is a &#8220;corporate policy that&#8217;s being instituted in some companies, mainly large companies,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This policy exists independent of its shareholders and its customers. It actually gets between them. It shifts the attention onto social justice and climate issues.&#8221;
&#8220;If I were a shareholder, I would be livid,&#8221; Gutfeld continued. &#8220;I would sell my stock immediately. I would only invest in companies that do not participate in this.&#8221;

One movement <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/firm-launches-asset-that-will-tell-corporate-america-to-put-profits-before-politics" target="_blank" rel="noopener">countering</a> the ESG agenda is a new <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/wall-street" target="_blank" rel="noopener">index fund</a> from Strive Asset Management that will push corporate America to pursue <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/business" target="_blank" rel="noopener">profits</a> rather than <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/woke" target="_blank" rel="noopener">social</a> agendas.
The company, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/americans-want-companies-to-stay-out-of-politics-ceo-launches-fund-to-take-on-woke-asset-managers">launched</a> earlier this year by entrepreneur <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/vivek-ramaswamy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vivek Ramaswamy</a>, will sell its Strive 500 exchange-traded fund (ETF) — a basket of shares meant to track the profits of the nation’s 500 largest companies — on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker STRV.
The firm will use “proxy voting and shareholder engagement” to press portfolio companies to maximize “value over all other agendas,” according to a statement from Strive obtained by The Daily Wire.
“Our message to America’s largest companies is simple: focus on your mission, not someone else’s social agenda,” Ramaswamy explained. “Hire talent based on merit over other social factors. We hope to drive positive change through our shareholder engagement.”

Cohost Greg Gutfeld responded to Biden&#8217;s comments first, saying that he meant to take a moment to defend the president.
&#8220;You know, I&#8217;ve got to take this moment to defend him, especially on the inflation piece,&#8221; Gutfeld said. &#8220;When he said inflation is up just an inch, he was probably referring to a chart. Right? Oh, look, that’s just an inch. That’s just an inch.&#8221;
&#8220;Maybe,&#8221; Perino replied.
&#8220;I think you’re right,&#8221; cohost Jesse Watters added.
&#8220;I thought that was a brilliant joke, but screw all of you. I’m always overwhelmed when Biden talks, because it’s like — it&#8217;s like the Netflix menu, so many options, and they all suck,&#8221; Gutfeld continued. &#8220;He basically said that Trump was divisive. He saw the pandemic was over. There was no inflation. We forgot that if the pandemic is over — I mean we did mention this — that means what he did with the loan forgiveness was what we thought it was: it was a trillion dollar bribe to his voters, that you and me, truck drivers, everyone else who&#8217;s making a living, has to pay for.&#8221;

Former Congressman Harold Ford Jr. (D-TN) opened the conversation with a joke, asking Perino to weigh in since she once beat co-host Jesse Watters in a basketball shooting competition.
&#8220;I really didn’t, but I should have. I was robbed,&#8221; Perino laughed, before turning to the topic at hand.
&#8220;I’ve been baffled by why the women who fought for Title IX have been silent. They benefited tremendously. They gave a lot of women and young girls opportunities for scholarships and opportunities to compete,&#8221; Perino began.
She went on to note that athletes were often better students, and that participation in organized athletics often helped students to learn the skills they might need later in life, whether they went into the corporate world or started their own businesses.
&#8220;You learn about teamwork and loss and winning and being gracious. And you learn so many things from it,&#8221; Perino continued. &#8220;And I’ve been baffled. Like where is everybody that succeeded in this? Now I find – I’m no longer baffled. I think it is shameful. Now you have somebody like Riley Gaines, who has to get up her courage, find her strong voice, and be the one that&#8217;s going to say, &#8216;but what about us?'&#8221;
Perino then addressed the <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/ahead-of-50th-anniversary-of-title-ix-senator-tuberville-warns-biden-admin-is-hacking-away-at-womens-progress/">proposed rule changes</a> directly, adding, &#8220;They’re erasing gender and women from the statute. The other thing I would point out, this is going to apply to all public schools and most universities, if the Biden rules go through, that using the wrong gender pronouns will now be considered sexual harassment. So wokism will be mandatory, if you want to compete or don’t want to be expelled. That&#8217;s what&#8217;s happening out there. Perino, who grew up on a ranch, argued that from the beginning the situation had been misread by people who had never spent any time around horses and had no idea what they were looking at. &#8220;They convicted these guys before they even investigated,&#8221; she said, adding that the only thing the agents deserved — after being relegated to desk duty immediately after the incident — was an apology.
Co-host Jesse Watters joked that if the CBP agents had hoisted the migrants onto their horses and ridden them into the country, Biden might have given them awards instead.
&#8220;Nonsense! I defer to Dana, who is very measured in her emotions and when she says this is the worst thing she’d seen, I respect that deeply,&#8221; Rivera said in response. &#8220;Because I know you don’t —&#8221;
Perino interrupted, noting that the baby formula shortage was &#8220;really bad too.&#8221;
Rivera went on to claim that when it came to immigration, Haitians often seemed to get &#8220;the short end of the stick&#8221; — arguing that they were turned back at the border in greater numbers than migrants from other nations.
Perino objected, but Rivera pivoted then to address the Border Patrol, saying, &#8220;This is, you must admit, when you look at this visual — put up a shot, put up any of the shots of that series —&#8221;
&#8220;That&#8217;s so wrong!&#8221; Perino interrupted. &#8220;You&#8217;re a lawyer, how can you say this?&#8221;

<a href="https://dailywire.com/news/its-gross-to-me-dana-perino-has-had-about-enough-of-bidens-ultra-maga-claims/">Perino</a> discussed the interview — hosted by NBC&#8217;s <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/did-they-all-come-in-and-lie-savannah-guthrie-challenges-amber-heards-claim-that-she-never-started-physical-fights/">Savannah Guthrie</a> — with her co-hosts on afternoon panel show &#8220;The Five,&#8221; and the overwhelming consensus was that Heard had not done herself any favors in her first major appearance following the <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/defiant-amber-heard-unloads-in-lengthy-post-after-johnny-depp-wins-big-in-defamation-case/">defamation trial</a> she lost to ex-husband and actor Johnny Depp.

Jesse Watters was first to weigh in on the issue, saying that he would have &#8220;laid low&#8221; rather than make such a high-profile appearance.
&#8220;I would have done this — I would have not done Savannah, is that her name?&#8221; Watters began.
&#8220;Good choice,&#8221; co-host Greg Gutfeld agreed.
&#8220;I would have not done that. I would’ve laid low and I would have hired a team to go behind the scenes to Depp’s team and beg for mercy. He does not have to collect the 8 million or however much money it is. He could forgive it. He&#8217;s a — what I hear he is a decent guy. Okay?&#8221; Watters continued.
Watters went on to say that he believed her career in acting was likely finished, arguing that &#8220;no one is going to touch her, she is toxic, so she has to rely on a different talent, I don’t know what that other talent is &#8230; that is the strategy.&#8221;
Co-host Geraldo Rivera wasn&#8217;t sure that Watters was right about Heard&#8217;s career being over, however, and he pushed back.
&#8220;Give it six months. Johnny Depp complained that his career was destroyed by Amber Heard,&#8221; he said, going on to suggest that Depp&#8217;s likable persona and popularity had made it much harder for Heard and her attorneys to cast him as abusive. &#8220;Harvey Weinstein, you know, ugly, unpopular, easy to put him in the role as an abusive person. Johnny Depp though — popular, quirky, hip—&#8221;
Perino&#8217;s assessment made it clear that she had not been overly impressed with either Heard or Depp: &#8220;No two people deserve each other more.&#8221;
&#8220;The one good thing that she said was that we both look like rats,&#8221; Perino continued. &#8220;That is true and inappropriate, and I have a feeling that she must be so unlikable. Her counsel hates her. Why would they tell her to to do this interview? Why now? It’s too soon, as Jesse — gave great advice.&#8221;
Judge Jeanine Pirro argued that ego had driven Heard to make the appearance, adding, &#8220;She is egotistical and believes that she convinced people that she is a battered woman.&#8221;
&#8220;She said she was up against Captain Jack Sparrow and all of his minions on social media,&#8221; Rivera jumped in again. &#8220;Why do people indulge themselves in social media when they know it’s going to be hurtful though? It seems a self-inflicted wound, if you wallow in your responses to your tweets.&#8221;
