A Democrat congresswoman has revived an effort to provide reparations payments to black Americans for slavery, introducing legislation that would cost trillions of dollars.
Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA) <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/race-politics/5302622-democrats-reintroduce-reparations-resolution/">reintroduced</a> the Reparations Now resolution, which was first introduced by former Rep. Cori Bush in 2023.
Lee says that the funds are owed to black Americans. “Black folks are owed more than thoughts and prayers. We’re owed repair, we’re owed restitution, and we’re owed justice,” Lee said at a press conference as she announced the reintroduction of the bill. “We’re here to say that there’s no more waiting, no more watering down, no more putting justice on layaway.”
If enacted, the bill is estimated to cost a whopping <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/far-left-congresswoman-revives-ousted-squad-dems-reparations-push-black-americans">$14 trillion</a>. The gross domestic product of the entire United States in 2023, by comparison, was <a href="https://www.bea.gov/news/2024/gross-domestic-product-fourth-quarter-and-year-2023-second-estimate">just over</a> $27 trillion, while the federal government’s entire budget in that same year was <a href="https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy1829">$6.1 trillion</a>.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), a member of the far-Left coalition of Democrats referred to as “the squad,” echoed Lee’s remarks and accused Trump’s policies of being “anti-blackness on steroids.”
“We will not back down in our pursuit of racial justice,” Pressley said. “The antidote to anti-Blackness is to be pro-Black, and we will do it unapologetically. The United States government owes us a debt, and we need reparations now.”
Cori Bush, who originally introduced the bill in 2023 before losing her reelection bid, joined the two at the press conference. “You cannot turn your back on the demand for reparations, because until there is repair, there will be no justice,” Bush said. “And where there is no justice, we will continue to fight. We’re not going anywhere.”
The legislation, which died after it was first introduced in 2023, has little chance of advancing in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

“Reparations based on race or historical grievances are not only unfair: they’re unconstitutional and divisive,” Babin said as he announced the legislation, which would strip federal funding from states and localities that pass reparations bills. “Our nation should focus on policies that promote economic opportunity for all, not government handouts based on ancestry.”

There are many ways in which the House of Representatives is feeling the effects of the absence of former Congresswoman Cori Bush. You might remember that Cori Bush was the only member of Congress in the history of this country who <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/17/us-news/cori-bush-doubled-down-on-bizarre-faith-healing-claims-in-tv-interview-my-hand-just-began-to-move/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> to have performed a bona fide miracle while in office. Specifically, in a televised interview, Bush said that she once cured a woman&#8217;s cancer simply by placing her hands on the woman&#8217;s body. As she put it: &#8220;This [homeless] lady came to us, and she had these tumors, and she wanted us to like, feel them. &#8230; I laid hands on her and prayed, and then I felt that my hand was no longer touching a tumor. It shrank along with the others on her body. &#8230; And the lumps that were there were no longer there. She was so happy, and she went on about her day.&#8221;
It&#8217;s too bad that this homeless woman disappeared, because this kind of interaction seems like the thing that cancer researchers might have been interested in following up on. But in any event, Bush didn&#8217;t stop there, because as we all know, you need *two* miracles in order to qualify for sainthood. Normally, these miraculous events occur after the saint has died. But Bush doesn&#8217;t have time for that. Therefore, she claimed that she also once helped a toddler take her first steps in St. Louis, even though the child was gravely ill. “I carried the child from the prayer room in the back of the church out into the sanctuary . . . ‘Walk,’ I said gently to the three-year-old girl, ‘You will walk.’ And this girl took her first step,” Bush wrote.
Because Bush was voted out of office in the last election, unfortunately, we don&#8217;t hear stories like this anymore. Therefore, until Jesus himself returns, we can assume that countless hobos in St. Louis will continue to suffer needlessly from cancer and all kinds of other horrible afflictions. But despite that sad reality, it&#8217;s not all bad news. Consider the fact that, without Cori Bush&#8217;s voice to amplify them, a lot of fraudulent BLM narratives will die before they get started. We also won&#8217;t have to listen to her tributes to Michael Brown and George Floyd every year. So that&#8217;s something, at least. Yes, we&#8217;ve lost a miracle worker. But we&#8217;ve gained some peace and quiet.
Or at least, we thought we gained some peace and quiet. At the moment, there is a concerted effort underway among House Democrats to revive the &#8220;legacy&#8221; of Cori Bush, such as it is. But they&#8217;re not revising the whole &#8220;bid for sainthood&#8221; routine. Instead, they&#8217;re doubling down on Cori Bush&#8217;s true passion in life, which is whipping up a race war. And to that end, Democrats are revitalizing one of Bush&#8217;s dumbest ideas, which is her plan to enact trillions of dollars in reparations.

Representative Summer Lee led the reintroduction of the Reparations Now resolution, which was first introduced in 2023 by former Representative Cori Bush. The resolution calls for the federal government to allocate trillions of dollars in reparations to Black Americans.&#8221;

Keep in mind, the entire federal budget for the last fiscal year was around $7 trillion. So we&#8217;re talking about spending a very significant chunk of the federal budget on handouts to black people, essentially. And on top of these trillions of dollars in reparations, Cory Booker and Jasmine Crockett are planning to introduce the &#8220;Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Commission Act,&#8221; which would supposedly “acknowledge and memorialize the arrival of the first slave ship in the United States and the injustices suffered by people of color throughout history.”
Here are Ayanna Pressley and Summer Lee to explain. And I promise these clips aren&#8217;t sped up in any way, at least as far as I know. They&#8217;re simply talking really, really fast for some reason. Watch:

Now, before we go any further with the specifics of this legislation, I have to provide something of a disclosure at this point. We&#8217;ve talked about the issue of reparations many times on this show, to be sure. But now I have a very personal stake in the issue. And that&#8217;s because recently, and somewhat unexpectedly &#8212; and I say this with nothing but modesty in my heart &#8212; I have become something of a pioneer when it comes to the issue of reparations in the United States. In fact, according to all available information, I am the only person in America who has actually paid reparations, along with the famed author Robin DiAngelo.
Now, you might point out that I was undercover doing a movie when I paid my reparations. And you might point out that I took my reparations back immediately after the cameras were off. And you might point out that my reparations were like $20. And all of that&#8217;s true. But it&#8217;s not the important thing to keep in mind here. The important thing is that I&#8217;m an expert in this issue, and therefore, I have no choice but to chime in and provide my analysis.
And with that in mind, the first thing that needs to be said is that, if we really want &#8220;reparations&#8221; for the descendants of slaves, then we&#8217;re going to spend a lot more than a few trillion dollars. That&#8217;s because every single person who&#8217;s alive right now on the planet, if you go back far enough, has ancestors who were slaves. Period, no exceptions. The Romans alone enslaved millions of people from all over the world. So did Egypt, Greece, China, the Persians, the Russians, the Mayans, the Aztecs, and Ottomans, and so on.
And that&#8217;s not even getting into indentured servitude. Take a look at what happened to Irish Catholics in the 17th century in places like Barbados, for example. Technically, many of these Irishmen became &#8220;indentured servants,&#8221; not slaves. But in many cases, that meant that they were treated even worse than slaves, since they weren&#8217;t expected to work for their entire lives. Roughly half of them died within four years, by some estimates. As the researcher Michael Mahoney <a href="https://blog.nationalarchives.gov.uk/irish-indentured-labour-in-the-caribbean/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pointed out</a>: &#8220;John Scott, an English adventurer who travelled in the West Indies during the Commonwealth, saw Irish servants working in field gangs with slaves, ‘without stockings under the scorching sun’. The Irish, he wrote, were &#8216;derided by the negroes, and branded with the Epithet of ‘white slaves.&#8221; &#8230; Once in the Caribbean, many plantation owners considered servants and freemen from Ireland as a potentially subversive lot who had to be controlled and kept in a labouring status. Punishments for attempted escapes included branding the letters ‘FT’ (Fugitive Traitor) on the servant’s forehead. One assembly member in Barbados is quoted in 1667 as stating, ‘We have more than a good many Irish amongst us, therefore I am for the downright Scott, who I am certain will fight without a crucifix about his neck.'&#8221;
In other words, there&#8217;s obvious anti-Catholic bigotry at work here, and in many cases, these Irish servants were treated far worse than slaves as they worked alongside them. And this is just one of dozens more examples. Here&#8217;s another. Did you know that, in 1797, 20% of the U.S. federal budget &#8212; a total of one million dollars at the time &#8212; went to paying tribute to Muslim nations in North Africa, so that they&#8217;d stop enslaving white people? This was a big business for them; in total, they enslaved more than a million whites from both Europe and the United States. This was during the Barbary Wars. For context, today, we don&#8217;t spend anywhere near 20% of the U.S. budget on defense spending. But in 1797, we spent 20% of the budget on ransom payments to Algiers. And as we did so, the Africans made sure to mock Americans at every opportunity. The tribute was ultimately ferried to Constantinople by the frigate USS George Washington, and along the way, the Africans forced the American warship to fly an Ottoman flag. This was sadistic brutality at every level. They only stopped enslaving white people when they were forced to do so.
These are chapters from American history that you don&#8217;t hear much about. Certainly, smooth-brained race hustlers like Ayanna Pressley won&#8217;t mention any of this. That&#8217;s because, as always, their goal isn&#8217;t actually to have a serious discussion about reparations &#8212; to the extent it&#8217;s even possible to do so. They know that this resolution has no chance of passing in either chamber of Congress, much less being signed into law. They know that this is a purely performative piece of legislation that&#8217;s intended to stoke racial conflict, and enrage as many people as possible so that they&#8217;ll feel entitled and envious. And then they might finally start rioting, as Democrats desperately want them to do.
Of course, indirect, inexplicit reparations have already been paid &#8212; in the form of DEI policies, affirmative action, the welfare state, and every other policy put in place in the name of white guilt. Most of the federal government is a kind of make-work program for certain demographics, to funnel them taxpayer money without any accountability. And we see what good all of that has done for the black community. But explicit reparations &#8212; the kind where black Americans get money simply for being black Americans &#8212; will almost certainly never happen. From a political perspective, it&#8217;s not feasible. This is yet another failed idea from the Cori Bush playbook, one among many.
At the same time, it&#8217;s interesting to note that this legislation comes at the very moment that white South Africans are fleeing their homeland, seeking refuge in the United States. They&#8217;re being forcibly evicted from their own homes solely because of their skin color, as we&#8217;ve discussed several times this week. And you know what that means: There&#8217;s about to be a lot more room in Africa for any supposedly oppressed group in the United States, including congresswomen like Ayanna Pressley. So maybe there&#8217;s an opportunity here for a kind of &#8220;reparation through repatriation.&#8221; Maybe we can offer some of these Democrats a taxpayer-funded, all-expenses-paid trip to whatever lands their ancestors came from. Since we&#8217;re judging everyone by their ancestors, it seems more than appropriate. Plus, they&#8217;ll gain access to plenty of fertile farmland in South Africa, as Don Lemon often reminds us. The opportunity for untold riches, in a land totally devoid of white people, is right there for the taking.
Will Ayanna Pressley and Summer Lee and all of these other Democrats seize that opportunity? Of course not. That&#8217;s because they know that, when given the opportunity, they can&#8217;t govern. They can&#8217;t improve anyone&#8217;s lives. They certainly can&#8217;t manage a farm. All they&#8217;re capable of doing is demonizing white people and looting the treasury. And without white people to demonize, there won&#8217;t be any money to loot. That&#8217;s why &#8220;reparations&#8221; is a losing issue for Democrats. It&#8217;s also why South Africa is about to collapse entirely. And it&#8217;s why, as more Americans wake up to the reality of what&#8217;s happening, politicians like Ayanna Pressley and Summer Lee and Ilhan Omar will go the way of Cori Bush. They&#8217;ll be removed from Congress by the voters. That is the outcome these anti-white politicians are apparently clamoring for. And now that they&#8217;ve introduced this reparations bill once again, and made it clear they have no interest in representing all Americans regardless of race, we should give it to them.

The husband of former far-left Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) was hit with federal charges this week alleging that he committed wire fraud related to the pandemic-era Paycheck Protection and Economic Injury Disaster Loan programs.
Cortney Merritts, 46, faces two counts of wire fraud for allegedly filing bogus applications in 2020 and 2021 with the United States Small Business Administration.
The indictment alleges that he obtained nearly $21,000 from the programs for his own benefit and enjoyment by lying on the applications about a company that he owned, including how many employees he had and the amount of revenue the company generated.
The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/03/20/cori-bush-busband-indicted-covid-fraud/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that while the indictment was signed by United States Attorney Ed Martin, President Donald Trump&#8217;s nominee to serve as permanent top prosecutor in D.C., the investigation was launched during the Biden administration.
Federal prosecutors ordered that he immediately forfeit to the United States any property connected to the alleged crime.
Merritts&#8217; attorney Justin Gelfand responded to the allegations: “We look forward to litigating this case in the courtroom.”
Bush was under federal criminal investigation last year over allegations that she misspent funds meant for personal security when she paid Merritts tens of thousands of campaign dollars to be her security guard.
The current status of the investigation is not known. No charges have been filed and she has not been formally accused of any criminal wrongdoing.
Bush represented her St. Louis-area district since 2021 after she toppled Rep. Lacy Clay (D-MO) in the 2020 primary, and over the years, she has faced scrutiny over payments for private security despite her calls to defund the police.
Her campaign has spent more than $750,000 on security services since 2019, according to federal election data. The congresswoman has previously said she was doling out money for protection because of attempts on her life.
She lost her seat in 2024 when she lost her primary to then-St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, a more moderate Democrat.

Galvanized by Rep. Cori Bush’s (D-MO) primary defeat, Minnesota Republicans are mounting an eleventh-hour campaign to make Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) the latest “Squad” member to lose her job.
Minnesota voters will decide Omar’s fate in Tuesday’s primary, in which she will face off against three Democratic challengers. Minnesota allows voters to participate in the primary of their choice, regardless of party affiliation. Since Republican candidate Dalia Al-Aqidi is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fight-between-good-and-evil-muslim-journalist-running-against-ilhan-omar-says-shes-taking-a-stand-for-israel">running unopposed</a>, there is a push for Minnesota Republicans to vote for one of Omar’s challengers.
The last-minute push—word of which is <a href="https://x.com/StopAntisemites/status/1821362204144279835">largely</a> <a href="https://x.com/MarinaMedvin/status/1821315707302269111">being</a> <a href="https://x.com/iamBrianBJ/status/1821027997341605973">spread</a> on X—comes after two of Omar’s fellow Squad members had significant upsets in their Democratic primaries this year. Bush lost her primary last week, and Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) lost in June. Bush and Bowman’s increasingly anti-Israel rhetoric is widely seen to have alienated voters.
Don Samuels, who came within 2,500 votes of <a href="https://ballotpedia.org/Minnesota%27s_5th_Congressional_District_election,_2022">defeating</a> Omar in 2022, is once again her top challenger.
Before running for Congress, Samuels was a Minneapolis City Councilman and Minneapolis School Board member. The Jamaican-born Samuels holds more pro-Israel views than Omar, who has faced criticism for her anti-Semitic and anti-Israel rhetoric since assuming office in 2019. Omar has been embroiled in controversy for ramping up that rhetoric in the wake of  Hamas’s  October 7 massacre of over 1,000 Israelis.
In April, Samuels attacked Omar for voting against bipartisan legislation aimed at curbing Iran, which had near-unanimous support from Democrats.

Samuels echoes mainstream Democratic positions on Israel and the Gaza War. On <a href="https://www.donsamuels.com/issues/middle-east/">his website</a>, he calls for Hamas to return hostages and lose its governing power in Gaza, but also for Israel to halt construction of new settlements and work towards a two-state solution.
Hoping to put a wider margin between herself and Samuels, Omar has boosted her fundraising efforts, reporting approximately $6.2 million in her pre-primary financial disclosure, according to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/minnesota-primary-senate-house-omar-ccc166cf0b9c42fb9dbb98ba0d35c258">the Associated Press</a>. Samuels has raised around $1.4 million. 
Bush and Bowman attribute their losses to the United Democracy Project, a super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) which spent at least <a href="https://forward.com/fast-forward/641967/ilhan-omar-cori-bush-aipac-israel/">$24 million</a> to oust them.

A disgruntled Bush attacked the groups in her concession speech, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/they-need-to-be-afraid-cori-bush-responds-to-primary-ouster-by-threatening-pro-israel-group">saying</a> “AIPAC, I’m coming to tear your kingdom down.”
The United Democracy Project has not gotten involved in Omar’s race. In a Wednesday interview with the Forward, Samuels said he thinks AIPAC  is “missing an opportunity.&#8221;
A <a href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/house/2024/minnesota/5/">July poll</a> shows Omar leading Samuels by 27 points. An internal poll released by the Samuels campaign showed him slightly trailing Omar with over 20 percent of voters still undecided.

Bush got her start as an activist in Ferguson after the shooting death of Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson, and has since used debunked claims about Brown to elevate herself and push for radical policies like &#8220;defund the police.&#8221; She toppled incumbent Rep. William &#8220;Lacy&#8221; Clay Jr. (D-MO) in 2020, but lost to Bell in Tuesday&#8217;s Democratic primary 51.2-45.6.
The soon-to-be-former Missouri Congresswoman has repeatedly blamed AIPAC for her plummeting poll numbers, after the organization <a href="https://www.axios.com/2024/08/04/cori-bush-wesley-bell-aipac-negative-ads" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dumped $9 million</a> into ads supporting Bell in his efforts to oust her. Fellow &#8220;Squad&#8221; member Jamaal Bowman — who also sided with anti-Israel protesters in the wake of last year&#8217;s October 7 massacre — was ousted in similar fashion earlier this summer, and has also blamed AIPAC for his political demise.

According to New York&#8217;s Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs, the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/26/nyregion/jamaal-bowman-squad-left.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reason for Bowman&#8217;s loss</a> was simple: &#8220;The voters in this district, and in other districts across the country, frankly, are just not buying some of the things that these candidates are selling. And now, moderate voters are getting engaged, they’re paying attention and they’re coming to the polls.&#8221;
But Usamah Andrabi, a spokesman for Justice Democrats, told The New York Times that the real problem was Jeffries — in spite of the fact that he had endorsed Bowman ahead of the primary.
&#8220;Jamaal Bowman is a model, not a warning, for what political leadership can look like,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The outcome of this election is a reflection on his leadership and whether Hakeem Jeffries stood up to Republican megadonors.&#8221;
Jeffries&#8217; spokeswoman Christie Stephenson fired right back, arguing that her boss&#8217; tenure would be judged based on whether he delivered a majority in the House in November. &#8220;The so-called Justice Democrats stated back in 2017 that their goal was to destroy the Democratic Party,&#8221; she said, noting that they had even threatened to primary Jeffries. “They have failed miserably in every way. Is anyone surprised?&#8221;

Representative Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) got trounced in his primary on Tuesday, but he is not the only &#8220;Squad&#8221; member facing the chopping block this primary season.
Representative Cori Bush (D-MO) is locked in a dead heat with her primary challenger, St. Louis County prosecuting attorney Wesley Bell, ahead of their August 6 election, according to one poll.
Bush, who represents the St. Louis area, is polling at 42%, one point lower than Bell at 43%, <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4740969-cori-bush-challenger-wesley-bell-locked-in-dead-heat-survey/damp/?nxs-test=damp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to polling from The Mellman Group for the organization Democratic Majority for Israel, which endorsed Bell.
This is a significant drop for Bush from January, when the same polling firm found her leading by 16 points.
In the more recent poll, Bell&#8217;s lead is within the margin of error, but some indicators suggest he may have a greater advantage.
He is leading Bush by 10 points among the most consistent primary voters — 49% to Bush&#8217;s 39%, according to the poll.
He also leads Bush in job approval, with 61% saying they approve of Bell&#8217;s job performance compared to just 49% for Bush.
Bell also has an edge in favorability, with 64% of voters viewing him favorably compared to Bush&#8217;s 60%.
In New York on Tuesday night, Bowman lost his Democratic primary to George Latimer, who served as County Executive for Westchester County.
Bowman&#8217;s ousting marked the first election loss for the group of progressive House lawmakers nicknamed the &#8220;Squad,&#8221; which includes Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Bowman&#8217;s primary involved fiery attacks by the two Democrats, with Latimer criticizing Bowman&#8217;s opposition to Israel’s war in Gaza as being out of sync with voters in his district, which includes Westchester County&#8217;s Jewish population.
Meanwhile, Bowman <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/25/politics/george-latimer-jamaal-bowman-new-york-16-primary/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was</a> forced to apologize for telling a group of pro-Palestinian protesters that reports of sexual violence by Hamas were &#8220;propaganda.&#8221;
Latimer also said Bowman, the first black man to represent his district, enjoys “an obvious ethnic benefit.”

Like Bowman, Bush has been vocal in her criticism of Israel for the war in Gaza and has <a href="https://bush.house.gov/media/press-releases/congresswoman-bush-statement-on-st-louis-board-of-aldermens-unanimous-passage-of-resolution-calling-for-ceasefire-in-gaza" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called</a> for a cease-fire.
Meanwhile, Bell&#8217;s campaign website says he believes Israel has the right to defend itself.
&#8220;Israel — the only democracy and strongest American ally in the Middle East — was attacked by terrorists on October 7,&#8221; Bell&#8217;s website <a href="https://www.bell4mo.com/issues/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reads</a>. &#8220;I believe Israel has the right to defend itself and go after those who perpetrated those attacks. In Congress, I’ll fight to make sure the United States remains Israel’s strongest ally.&#8221;
The &#8220;Squad&#8221; members made headlines when they were first elected for ousting members of Congress who had held their seats for a decade or longer.
Bush ousted 10-term incumbent Lacy Clay in 2020 and became the first black woman from Missouri to serve in the House.

Bush, who defeated incumbent Rep. William &#8220;Lacy&#8221; Clay in 2020 and promptly aligned herself with the far left &#8220;Squad&#8221; — originally Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) — made the claim in her 2022 book, but it went unnoticed until The New York Post&#8217;s Jonathan Levine <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/15/us-news/cori-bush-claimed-to-performed-miracles-cured-tumors-in-autobiography/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published a piece</a> over the weekend.
&#8220;As I learned how to apply God’s Word to my life in new ways, I better understood the power that was already residing in me,&#8221; Bush wrote in &#8216;The Forerunner: A Story of Pain and Perseverance in America.'&#8221;
&#8220;It was there, waiting for me to acknowledge it, to use it. I had the confidence to heal others with God’s power,&#8221; she continued, and went on to give several examples.
&#8220;One woman whom we met had several visible tumors on her torso. She was due to have surgery but lacked health insurance and living in the park. One of the tumors was particularly painful to her. I laid hands on her and prayed, and I felt that my hand was no longer touching a tumor. It shrank along with the others on her body,&#8221; Bush claimed.
She also claimed to have cured a toddler who couldn&#8217;t walk as the result of a brain bleed shortly after birth: &#8220;I carried the child from the prayer room in the back of the church out into the sanctuary &#8230; &#8216;Walk,&#8217; I said gently to the three-year-old girl, &#8216;you will walk.&#8217; And this girl took her first step. Then another, and another. She walked. Her grandmother walked into the sanctuary just in time to see the child take about two dozen steps. She screamed, and then she kept screaming. When she caught her breath, she looked at me in wonder and said &#8216;Praise God.&#8217; She grabbed her granddaughter and walked with her out of the church.&#8221;

Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Cori Bush (D-MO) deleted posts on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/memorial-day" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Memorial Day</a> after facing backlash online for not understanding what the day is about.
Bush posted on her official government X account: “This #MemorialDay &amp; every day, we honor our veterans in St. Louis. We must invest in universal health care, affordable housing, comprehensive mental health services, and educational &amp; economic opportunities for our veterans as we work to build a world free of war and violence.”
Omar followed suit, adding just a few minutes later on her government X account: “On #MemorialDay, we honor the heroic men and women who served our country. We owe them more than our gratitude — they have more than earned access to quality mental health services, job opportunities, housing assistance, and the benefits they were promised.”
Memorial Day is observed every year on the last Monday during the month of May to honor U.S. service members who have died while in the U.S. Military.
Veterans Day is observed on November 11 every year, regardless of what day it falls on, and is a day to honor everyone who has served in the U.S. Military and is &#8220;is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service,&#8221; the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs <a href="https://department.va.gov/veterans-day/facts-and-information/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says</a>.
Both lawmakers faced criticism online for their posts.

Bush&#8217;s defense of the anti-Semitic campus protests mirrored almost exactly the words of Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ilhan-omar-tries-to-defend-columbia-protesters-and-her-daughter-and-it-backfires-immediately" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ilhan Omar</a> — whose daughter was among those arrested at Columbia University for instigating the protests.
&#8220;Throughout history, protests were co-opted and made to look bad so police and public leaders would shut them down. That’s what we are seeing now at Columbia University,” Omar claimed. “The Columbia protesters have made clear their demands and want their school not to be complacent in the ongoing Genocide in Gaza. Public officials and media making this about anything else are inflaming the situation and need to bring calmness and sanity back.&#8221;

A Democratic lawmaker proposed exempting black people from paying taxes as a form of reparations last week.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas said on an episode of “The Black Lawyers Podcast” that a celebrity – she could not remember who – inspired her to look at exempting black people from paying taxes, according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/04/10/us-news/democrat-congresswoman-suggests-black-people-be-exempt-from-paying-taxes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a>.
“I don’t know that that’s … necessarily a bad idea,” Crockett remembered thinking when she heard the proposal. “One of the things they propose is black folk not have to pay taxes for a certain amount of time because … that puts money back in your pocket.”
Crockett said that a tax exemption may be a more palatable reparations solution to get behind rather than “actually giving out dollars.” The shortfall is that the proposal would only help those black people who are currently paying taxes.
“If you do the no tax thing, for people that are already, say, struggling and not paying taxes in the first place — ” Crockett said.
Progressive Democrats have backed reparations as a way to pay black Americans for the United States’ history of slavery for years, though the proposal has failed to gain popular support. Even in deep blue California, nearly 60% of voters <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nearly-60-of-california-voters-oppose-cash-reparations-for-slavery-poll">said</a> they opposed such a policy. Just 28% of California voters support it, according to a September poll by the University of California Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies.
Elected Democrats have continued to push the policy, however. In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul in December <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-york-governor-kathy-hochul-signs-bill-creating-task-force-to-consider-race-based-reparations">signed</a> legislation creating a commission to study the issue. The bill set forth a nine-member committee tasked with examining “the institution of slavery” and making “determinations regarding compensation.”
In January, Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) called for reparations in a post on X. Bush said that the United States “owes” the descendants of slaves.

“Our country owes – OWES – a debt to the descendants of enslaved Black people, not just for slavery, but for what followed, like Black Codes, red lining, Jim Crow, and mass incarceration,” she <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cori-bush-demands-reparations-gets-a-virtual-earful-instead">said</a>. “That’s why I introduced my Reparations NOW resolution. This country has an obligation.”
Aside from its unpopularity with Americans, reparations have faced other hurdles, such as questions over legality and who would qualify for the special treatment. Critics have said that such a policy would be racist against Americans who had nothing to do with the historic racism against black people.
