The National Football League is looking to replace its chain-gang measurement system with the high-tech Hawk-Eye virtual technology to measure first downs starting with the 2025 season.
“Among the interesting items from an NFL football ops session with media: the Hawk-Eye virtual measurement for line to gain is slated to replace the chains as the primary measurement system for the regular season in 2025,” an <a href="https://x.com/MikeGarafolo/status/1894862511955923004" target="_blank" rel="noopener">X</a> post on Wednesday from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo read.
“The chain gang will remain on sidelines as a backup,” he added. “Average time to measure with the chains: 75 seconds. Virtual measurements in the testing phase: 30 seconds.”
The league said that an average of 12 weekly measurements took place during last season, the <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/02/26/sports/nfl-is-finally-replacing-antiquated-chain-gang/">New York Post</a> noted.

The decision can be made without a vote from the owners of the 32 NFL teams, <a href="https://x.com/MarkMaske/status/1894862693628006694">according to The Washington Post</a>.
“The whole effort was to begin taking a look at it, to see what worked, what didn’t work,” Walt Anderson, the NFL’s officiating rules analyst and club communications liaison, said back in August, per the outlet.
Interestingly, the officials must first place the ball on the field manually following the play and then the Hawk-Eye virtual measurement will assess if a ball has made it past the line to gain or not, the Post noted.
“This is post spotting the ball,” NFL senior vice president of football business strategy Kimberly Fields told The Washington Post. “The officials on the field will still determine where forward progress ends.”
The technology was first tested during the 2024 preseason, with a growing group calling for it to become a reality following what some felt was a questionable first-down call during the AFC Championship between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills.
However, the Hawk-Eye virtual measurement might not have had an effect on the Chiefs-Buffalo game because the officials on the field are the ones who determine if Bills QB Josh Allen would’ve gained a first down in the game or not. During that playoffs game, the officials determined Allen was indeed short of the first down after he attempted to do a quarterback sneak.
The ball was then handed over to the Chiefs, who went down and scored and eventually went on to win the game, securing the team&#8217;s third straight trip to the Super Bowl.

Chiefs star QB <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/patrick-mahomes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Patrick Mahomes</a> had nothing but praise for God after the Kansas City team sealed a third trip in a row to the Super Bowl with a 32-29 victory against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night.
Seconds after the Chiefs became AFC Champions again, a <a href="https://x.com/Sports_Spectrum/status/1883712399209095437">CBS sportscaster </a>caught up with Mahomes and asked him, pointing to the team’s chance to make history as threepeat SB champions, “How do you even describe this one, this opportunity ahead?&#8221; 
Super Bowl LIX will be held on February 9 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
“I mean, first off, I want to give all glory to God,” Mahomes told the reporter. “Without him, none of this is possible. And I truly mean that.”
“And I’m just so proud of my teammates and how they responded,” he added. “That was a great football team and I’m just at a loss of words &#8230; I’m excited for New Orleans.”

It is not the first time the future NFL Hall of Famer has been open about his faith. Following the Chiefs&#8217; 25-22 overtime victory in Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers, the NFL star credited God with the team’s win, as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/he-challenged-us-to-make-us-better-patrick-mahomes-credits-god-for-super-bowl-win">reported</a>.
Mahomes spoke to the press immediately after the Chiefs won the big game for the second consecutive year and said, “I just got to give God the glory” as he praised his team members for never faltering during the difficult season.
“He [God] challenged us to make us better,” Mahomes added. “And I am so proud of my guys man, this is awesome. It’s legendary.”
Mahomes has often spoken about his faith. In February 2023, he praised God after he scored the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award for the 2022 season.

Once the footage surfaced, social media shared their thoughts and basically blasted Allen.

Matt Araiza, also known as the &#8220;Punt God,&#8221; signed with Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday after being dropped from a lawsuit and not charged in a rape case that derailed his NFL career.

Araiza was <a href="https://x.com/matt_araiza/status/1520492153893363713?s=20">drafted</a> by the Buffalo Bills in 2022 and shortly after, a woman filed a civil lawsuit claiming the NFL rookie and two college football teammates gang-raped her when she was just 17, as The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/buffalo-bills-punter-cut-from-team-after-being-accused-of-sexual-assault-was-somewhere-else-during-alleged-incident-investigators-say">reported</a>.

The Bills at the time also said they investigated the incident and employed Araiza anyway.
The civil lawsuit became public and, based on the allegations, media and the public vilified Araiza, taking the claims at face value. The Bills cut Araiza, and on December 7, 2022, prosecutors announced that they wouldn&#8217;t charge anyone for the alleged gang-rape, following a 124-day investigation.
San Diego&#8217;s district attorney Summer Stephan said at the time that &#8220;ultimately, prosecutors determined it is clear the evidence does not support the filing of criminal charges and there is no path to a potential criminal conviction,&#8221; the <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/02/22/sports/chiefs-sign-matt-araiza-after-he-was-not-charged-in-rape-case/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=nypost&amp;utm_medium=social">New York Post</a> noted.

Later, it came out that prosecutors said Araiza <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/2023/05/08/as-civil-lawsuit-proceeds-prosecutors-say-former-bills-punter-matt-araiza-wasnt-present-for-alleged-gang-rape">was not present</a> at the time of the alleged incident.
According to investigators, Araiza wasn&#8217;t even at the house when the incident is alleged to have occurred, and video evidence from the encounter casts doubt on the claim that the sex between the woman and the other men was not consensual, as previously reported.
Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend has been with Kansas City for the last four seasons, but becomes an unrestricted free agent next month, NBC noted.

Jason admitted from the minute he got into the suite he wanted to get out of the box and into the stands with the Buffalo fans and &#8220;take everything off,&#8221; calling the experience from start to finish at the game &#8220;electric.&#8221;

&#8220;I feel like taking your shirt off is a Buffalo Bills thing,&#8221; Jason said as video of him drinking liquor shots out of a bowling ball at a tailgate party before the game and crushing beers in the stands played in the background. 
&#8220;I wanted to take my shirt off at the tailgate,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Then when I entered the box I noticed &#8230; I could jump out of this box and I&#8217;ll be outside and if I take my shirt off then I&#8217;m outside part of the Buffalo Bills pageantry.&#8221;
Travis noted that his brother decided to celebrate Kelce&#8217;s touchdown by taking off his shirt and jumping out the window, calling the scene &#8220;pure pandemonium.&#8221;
The Chiefs star also bemoaned the fact there were not enough cameras on the suite to get Kylie&#8217;s reaction to her husband&#8217;s antics and Jason admitted, &#8220;I don&#8217;t think she was happy about it, to be honest with you.&#8221;

CBS announced on Tuesday that the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/paywalled-chiefs-dolphins-wild-card-game-sets-streaming-record" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kansas City Chiefs</a> and Buffalo Bills AFC showdown was watched by a whopping 50.4 million viewers, making it the most watched NFL Divisional Playoff game ever.
The Chiefs&#8217; 27-24 victory over the Bills came down to the last minutes and ended up scoring the honor of not only the most-watched playoff game, but the first ever to surpass 50 million viewers, a press release from CBS Sports and <a href="https://www.paramountpressexpress.com/cbs-sports/shows/nfl-on-cbs/releases/?view=109115-nfl-on-cbs-scores-the-most-watched-nfl-divisional-playoff-game-ever-with-more-than-50-million-viewers">Paramount+</a> read.
Sunday night&#8217;s playoff game was up by more than 10 percent from last year&#8217;s — and beat out the previous record set in 2017 when the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers NFL Divisional playoff game delivered 48.5 million viewers.

To put the Chiefs-Bills playoff game numbers into further context, the comparable playoff game that took place in Jan. 2023 — between NFC leaders Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers — garnered 45 million viewers, the press release noted.
At one point, viewership for the game spiked to 56 million viewers and gave Paramount+ its most-streamed live event ever.
The nail-biting game between Kansas City and Buffalo was also the most-watched program on any network since Super Bowl LVII (Feb. 12, 2023), the press release added.
All four of the playoff games over the weekend saw great numbers, with the Packers and 49ers game on Fox coming in second place with 37.5 million viewers and the NFC Divisional Playoff game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions taking the third spot with 37.2 million viewers, <a href="https://deadline.com/2024/01/chiefs-bills-nfl-divisional-playoff-ratings-1235802215/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Deadline</a> noted.
The numbers for Sunday&#8217;s viewership aren&#8217;t completely unwarranted given the fact that there was plenty of excitement as the Bills and Chiefs fans saw the lead in the game change five times in 60 minutes.
Kansas City now advances to the AFC Championship game on Sunday, where they will be on the road against the Baltimore Ravens. The winner will move on to the Super Bowl.
Throughout the regular season, the NFL&#8217;s viewership was up over the last few years, with the numbers being the best the league has seen since 2015, <a href="https://deadline.com/2024/01/chiefs-bills-nfl-divisional-playoff-ratings-1235802215/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Deadline</a> noted.

Ella and her mom weren&#8217;t initially seated next to the box suite, but were able to change seats at halftime thanks to a friend. It was then they were seated right below the box where Kelce and Swift were watching the game.
&#8220;Jason drank his beer and then he opened up the window,&#8221; Ella told the outlet. &#8220;He climbed out of the suite and gave the girl next to us a photo and then he said [to me] &#8216;Let&#8217;s show Taylor this sign.'&#8221; 
&#8220;Taylor smiled,&#8221; Ella added, showing the outlet how the singer excitedly waved at her. &#8220;She was so happy and she did like this with her hand.&#8221;

 Piazza&#8217;s mom Jessica gushed on the morning show about how kind Travis&#8217; brother was for what he did for her little girl.
&#8220;He was so kind to her,&#8221; Jessica told &#8220;Today.&#8221; &#8220;And I was just so thankful that he gave her the chance to see Taylor because she was — she was standing up there at the top of the bleachers with her sign just waiting and hoping and so brave — she climbed all the way to the top.&#8221;

Except this group of fans decided to make things a bit more exciting by setting one of the folding tables on fire and then throwing their pal, who was wearing a Detroit Lions sweatshirt, onto it.

However, before the fan landed, it appeared that someone added an extra dose of lighter fluid to the flames and when he hit the table, the seat of his pants caught fire.
At first, the fan seemed unfazed by being slammed onto the table and very unaware that he was on fire. However, once he stood up, he realized that there were flames coming from his rear end.
Initially, the fan flailed about trying to extinguish the flames, even crashing into the people standing around capturing video of the chaos. He then threw himself to the snow-covered ground and attempted to put out the flames without any success. Luckily though, one of his pals stepped in and helped eventually extinguish the fire.

It is unclear from the video if the fan was injured from the stunt or if he managed to escape unharmed.
Back inside Highmark Stadium, there was plenty of excitement as the Bills and Chiefs fans saw the lead in the game change five times in 60 minutes. As most people expected, it went down to the wire and final minute resulting in a Kansas City 27-24 win.

NFL commentators and fans alike criticized Kansas City Chiefs quarterback <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/patrick-mahomes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Patrick Mahomes</a> for his sideline meltdown following a tough loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
Upset about an obvious offensive offsides call against the Chiefs, which likely cost them the game, Mahomes threw his helmet to the ground, yelled, and was held back by teammates moments after the loss. Perhaps most notably, Mahomes even complained to opposing QB <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/espns-foxworth-i-root-against-josh-allen-because-his-fans-are-patriotic-americans-who-like-dogs-really-concerning" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Josh Allen</a> about the call when the two met to shake hands — a moment that&#8217;s usually a display of sportsmanship.

Even after Mahomes had time to cool off, the QB continued to complain about the call during a post-game presser.
Mahomes seemed to acknowledge that his teammate Kadarius Toney was indeed offsides, but argued that referees rarely make such a call without at least giving a warning. He also expressed anger that teammate Travis Kelce&#8217;s impressive catch and pitch backward to Toney, who ran it in for a touchdown, was negated by the offsides call.
&#8220;I mean, he [Toney] probably is barely offsides, but for the [referee] to take the game into his hands over a call like that, that doesn&#8217;t affect the play at all — at all, didn&#8217;t affect anything. I mean, it&#8217;s just tough,&#8221; Mahomes told the press.

Likewise, sports commentators criticized Mahomes for taking his anger out on the referrers, instead of Toney, who they argued cost the Chiefs the game.
&#8220;I lost a little respect for Patrick Mahomes,&#8221; Sal Iacono reacted. &#8220;And I love that guy.&#8221; He added offensive offsides is not something that&#8217;s &#8220;never called,&#8221; like Mahomes insisted. &#8220;They called it twice last year, they called it 11 times this year — so they definitely call that,&#8221; Iacono said.
