“Malcolm in the Middle” fans are trashing the series reboot, saying it went totally woke to the point of including a “non-binary” child, among other crimes against the original.
The shoehorning of modern leftist elements into a beloved series should come as no surprise, especially since it’s coming from a company like Disney, which now owns the show through its acquisition of 21st Century Fox, the studio behind the original.
“Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair” debuted four back-to-back episodes on Friday, and due to the busy schedules of the cast, there won’t be any more. The latest episodes follow the titular star (played by Frankie Muniz) after he’s all grown up and has grown apart from his family. 
The original series, which ran from 2000 to 2006, focused on Malcolm, an exceptionally intelligent child who made his way through life with a dysfunctional family. The sitcom was a massive hit, winning seven Emmy Awards and attracting a cult following.
It ended with family matriarch Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) finding out she’s pregnant. “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston played the dad, and reprises his role in “Life’s Still Unfair,” too. Their surprise child, Kelly, is a teenager in the new version and uses they/them pronouns. The actor playing the part, Vaughan Murrae, identifies as &#8220;non-binary&#8221; in real life, too. Stevie Kenarban, who was Malcolm&#8217;s best friend in the original series, is depicted as gay in the reboot.
Many fans are not happy about the changes. 
“So. Disney brings Back [‘Malcolm in the Middle’], which ended decades ago with a proper send off. They made Stevie gay, despite him crushing on Malcolm’s babysitter, pretending to be in critical condition to get another girl to like him, there’s stacking amounts of evidence proving he likes girls,” one popular reaction on X <a href="https://x.com/anime_esh202/status/2043078136976273667?s=43">says</a>. 
“And the child Hal and Lois had at the very end is, wait for it……..non binary. If you had even a shred of hope that you were going to ‘relive the glory days’ you were kidding yourself… Don’t waste your time, it’s modern Disney being modern Disney again, and again, and again!”
“What a disgusting, soul-crushing disappointment,” another viral reaction <a href="https://x.com/FloppingAces/status/2042954425137009066">said</a>. “It&#8217;s absolute trash. No laughs. No chaos. No nostalgia. Just four episodes of pointless, preachy slop that feels like it was written by a committee of blue-haired Disney interns who hate straight families and actual comedy.”
“Woke isn&#8217;t gone. It&#8217;s just suppressed for the moment,” another person <a href="https://x.com/IamSvented/status/2043008792191816182">agreed</a>. “They will be back the moment they get the political support they need, and they will be angry, and they will be in full-on retribution mode.”
Show creator Linwood Boomer and his wife, executive producer Tracy Katsky, said they drew inspiration from their personal lives. 
“I gotta tell you, it’s a really important thing to us,” Katsky <a href="https://deadline.com/2026/04/malcolm-in-the-middle-creator-ep-wife-lgbtq-kids-1236786214/">told</a> Deadline during a recent interview just ahead of the reboot’s premiere. 
“Three out of four of our kids are queer, and without making it a thing and without making an issue, I think it’s really nice to have a character that, that’s just a facet of their personality as opposed to the entire story.”

The “Malcolm in the Middle” revival will be missing one of its major stars when it returns after the actor left Hollywood and his acting career behind.
The popular sitcom is set to hit Disney+ with a four-episode series &#8212; and when it does, all but one of the stars from the original series are coming back, <a href="https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/malcolm-in-the-middle-revival-christopher-masterson-justin-berfield-dewey-recast-1236347654/">Variety</a> reported.
Stars like Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, Christopher Masterson, Justin Berfield, and Jane Kaczmarek are all on board, but the actor who played the youngest member of the family Dewey, Erik Per Sullivan, will be absent.
The young star’s last project was in 2010 with the release of the feature “Twelve,” the outlet noted. He has also been noticeably absent from various “Malcolm in the Middle” reunions over the years.

During an interview in 2024, Kacsmarek, who played the mom on the hit show, said that Per Sullivan is &#8220;well, he’s very, very well,” <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/malcolm-middle-revival-missing-key-actor-who-ditched-hollywood" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a> noted.
&#8220;He wasn’t interested in acting at all,” the actress said. “He goes to school at a very, very, very prestigious American university that he’s asked us all to be quiet about.”
&#8220;I think so many people think being in show business is just the greatest thing in the world, and it’s not for everybody,” she added. &#8220;He’s a very grateful kid, for Dewey.”
“&#8217;Malcolm in the Middle&#8217; is set to begin production in the coming weeks in Vancouver,” the official logline for the revival series read.
“Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kacsmarek) demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party,” it added.
At the time of this publication, a release date has yet to be announced. 
In February, Muniz opened up about the upcoming project and said he was &#8220;really excited,&#8221; <a href="https://www.eonline.com/news/1415283/malcolm-in-the-middle-revival-recasts-major-role">E! News</a> reported.
&#8220;I’m so excited,” the actor explained. “I think Brian and I first started talking at a dinner that we had in 2015. And the fact that now, 10 years later, 25 years after the show started, it&#8217;s going to happen—I&#8217;m really excited.”
“I think people are going to be thrilled to see everybody and the ideas that they&#8217;ve come up with,” he added. “Because that was a big thing for me, too, is like the possibilities are endless on what Malcolm and his family could be up to. I&#8217;ve read the scripts, so I know. And I think people are going to be pretty excited.&#8221;
The original series appeared on Fox and ran from 2000 to 2006, earning 33 Emmy nominations, including two wins each for best writing and best directing for a comedy, Fox noted.

In a post on <a href="https://x.com/megynkelly/status/1845471239021752358">X</a> that’s since gone viral, the host of Sirius XM&#8217;s “The Megyn Kelly Show” podcast reposted a clip of Cranston stumping for Vice President Kamala Harris and said that he despises Trump supporters.
“Bryan Cranston ended his lifelong friendship with someone very close to him because the friend is a Republican/Trump supporter,” Kelly wrote. “I know the friend well. Only the most rabid deranged person would do this.”
“Remember that when you see him starring in [something],” she added. &#8220;If you vote Trump, he can’t stand you.”

Later on her <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us9ls0iqvoo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">podcast</a>, Kelly explained her post further about &#8220;a dear friend&#8221; of hers who she said &#8220;was one of this guy&#8217;s closest friends for decades.&#8221;
&#8220;And Bryan Cranston dumped my friend as his friend because he&#8217;s a Republican and voted for Trump,&#8221; the host said. &#8220;He&#8217;s not even like a huge Republican. He&#8217;s a Republican… he&#8217;s a right-leaning guy, but he ended their lifelong friendship just because he turned out to be a Trump supporter. That is so vile and so disgusting&#8230;&#8221;
Kelly’s post came just after Cranston appeared in Phoenix, Arizona, where he endorsed Harris because of her radical <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/pro-life" target="_blank" rel="noopener">abortion</a> record.

A new ad campaign running in battleground states — from The Women Speak Out PAC, a partner of SBA Pro-Life America — points out how they said Harris has refused to “name a single limit on abortion, even in the seventh, eighth, and ninth months of pregnancy,” SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser told <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-2-million-ad-campaign-hits-kamala-on-abortion-in-battleground-states">The Daily Wire</a>.
“Harris promises to federally force taxpayers to fund all-trimester abortions and cheers on politicians who shut down pregnancy centers that offer real choices and resources for women,” she added.
“Most Americans have reasonable views on abortion. Kamala Harris goes too far. Most Americans support parental notification. Kamala led the charge against it. Most Americans oppose taxpayers funding abortions in foreign countries. Kamala is for it,” a narrator in one of the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBylhrCKYlA">digital ads</a> says.

“Breaking Bad” star <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/bryan-cranston">Bryan Cranston</a> officially endorsed <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris</a> for president at a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/abortion">pro-abortion</a> rally over the weekend in Arizona.
The 68-year-old actor took the stage in Phoenix at the “Fighting for Reproductive Freedom” event, per <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/bryan-cranston-harris-trump-endorsement-abortion-b2628822.html">The Independent</a>.
“I&#8217;m not a politician; I’m not a doctor or a lawyer, but I have played all of this on television,” Cranston told the crowd. “But I am a father of a daughter, and it’s important to me for her life now and for the future and for other fathers’ daughters to be able to have within their lifetime the fundamental right of freedom of choice.”
He continued, “There should not be anyone but them deciding what happens to their own body. That’s why I’m enthusiastically supporting Vice President Harris and Governor Walz.”
The actor also commended the Vice President for “bringing back optimism and fighting cynicism and animosity in Washington.”
Cranston is just one of many Hollywood stars to express support for Harris. Other famous supporters include Neil Young, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Stevie Wonder, Olivia Rodrigo, George Clooney, Barbara Streisand, John Legend, Jamie Lee Curtis, Mark Hamill, Jennifer Lawrence, and Bruce Springsteen, to name a few.

“This conversation I had with Bill [Maher], we’re talking about critical race theory,” Cranston said during an interview with CNN host Chris Wallace. “And I think it’s imperative that it’s taught, that we look at our history much the same I think that Germany has looked at their history involvement in the wars, one and two, and embrace it and say this is where we went wrong. This is how it went wrong.”
“When I see the Make America Great Again, my comment is, do you accept that that could possibly be construed as a racist remark?” he continued. “And most people, a lot of people go, how could that be racist? &#8220;Breaking Bad&#8221; star Bryan Cranston revealed how a cross-country motorcycle trip with his brother in the mid-1970s led to the pair becoming suspects in a very real murder case.
Cranston <a href="https://people.com/how-bryan-cranston-became-murder-suspect-was-targeted-by-scorned-lover-soap-set-8580183" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spilled the details</a> during a recent appearance on Jesse Tyler Ferguson&#8217;s &#8220;<a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bryan-cranston/id1683905652?i=1000644286588" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dinner&#8217;s On Me</a>&#8221; podcast, saying that it had all started when they ran out of money somewhere in Florida and needed to make some extra cash.
Cranston explained that they had found work at a restaurant called The Hawaiian Inn, but had found themselves working for a cook that no one liked — a man named Peter Wong.
&#8220;There was just no way on earth you were ever going to get on his good side. But he liked the ladies. And so, all the men knew, oh, if we had any problem in the kitchen, we had to send them in,&#8221; Cranston said, adding that staffers would on occasion fantasize about how they might rid themselves of the &#8220;awful&#8221; Wong.
&#8220;We&#8217;d all discuss how rotten and mean Peter Wong is, and we&#8217;d all discuss, if one were to do away with Peter Wong &#8230; how would one do it?&#8221; Cranston recalled. Among the suggestions he remembered were something involving the meat-grinder and a plot to crack him over the head with one of his own pans.
But the Cranstons had never planned to stay long, and eventually took off on their motorcycles — generally headed toward Maine. And as luck would have it, that was about the same time that Wong mysteriously disappeared.
&#8220;Little did we know that right at the time we said goodbye and left the job, Peter Wong went missing,&#8221; Cranston said. &#8220;He was not found for a week, week and a half, two weeks.&#8221;
Wong was found dead, stuffed in the trunk of a car after being robbed, investigators eventually determined — but before they figured things out, Cranston and his brother topped their suspect list.
&#8220;My friends were saying, &#8216;Homicide, what&#8217;s going on?&#8217; They&#8217;re saying, uh, &#8216;Peter Wong was found murdered.&#8217; And everything just drops because this is serious stuff,&#8221; Cranston recalled. &#8220;And then they said, &#8216;Is there anyone ever that you can remember talking about hurting or maiming or doing any harm to Peter Wong?&#8217; And everyone&#8217;s like, &#8216;Um, yes.'&#8221;

Several <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/entertainment" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cast members</a> of the hit AMC drama series “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/breaking-bad" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Breaking Bad</a>” showed up on the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/strike" target="_blank" rel="noopener">picket line</a> on Tuesday as the SAG-AFTRA and WGA writers and actors strikes drag on in Hollywood.
Lead “Breaking Bad” actor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/bryan-cranston" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bryan Cranston</a>, who played Walter White in the Emmy-award-winning series, expressed some of the concerns that led to a work stoppage in the first place. One issue he called out specifically was the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
“We’re here in solidarity with all of us, with all of our brothers and sisters who are affected by this, and the WGA and SAG,” Cranston told the gathered crowd outside Sony Pictures Studios, per <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/breaking-bad-cast-reunite-picket-line-strike-ai-concerns-bryan-cranston-1235577711/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Hollywood Reporter</a>. “We are all the backbone of our business.”
He continued, “We’re not making them [studios and streamers] the enemy, they’re not villains. These are people we all will be working with once again at some point. We just want them to see reality and fairness and come back to the table and talk to us.”

The 67-year-old actor told THR that he is hoping for an “equitable contract” for talent to earn a guaranteed living wage.
“Something that makes the working actor able to pay their bills, pay their rent, buy food for their families,” Cranston told the outlet. “I mean, it’s really to that point. It’s a watershed moment.”
The “Breaking Bad” alum also came down hard on the use of AI. 
“This contract will have a sentence in there that states, ‘Actors must be human beings.’ This is mind-boggling, but that’s what it will say, and the same thing with the Writers Guild contract: ‘Must be written by a human being,&#8217;” Cranston said. 
“We’ve never had to imagine that before but that’s here right now. It’s possible of happening right now and we have to step in and say, ‘You are dehumanizing the workforce and it cannot continue.&#8217;”
Former Breaking Bad actors Aaron Paul, Betsy Brandt, Jesse Plemons, and writer Peter Gould joined Cranston on the picket line.

Plemons, who played Todd Alquist in the series, spoke up on the issue of residual payments for actors, another key item in the contract negotiations. “I started acting quite a while ago and that’s how people survive when they’re not working,” Plemons said.
WGA representatives met with studio executives last week but failed to make any progress toward coming to an agreement. They expressed disgust that the execs shared contract details with the public, as The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/studios-share-contract-details-after-wga-leaders-meet-with-hollywood-ceos" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. 
“This was the companies’ plan from the beginning – not to bargain, but to jam us,” the reps said at the time. “It is their only strategy – to bet that we will turn on each other.”
The WGA has been on strike since May 2, while the SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 14. This is the first dual strike since 1960.

Cranston appeared at the SAG-AFTRA &#8220;Rock the City For a Fair Contract&#8221; rally in Times Square, New York. Earlier this month, Iger <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/2023/07/13/sag-aftra-actors-strike-2023-live-updates/70410271007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> on CNBC that the demands from actors and writers were not realistic, saying, “I understand any labor organizations&#8217; desire to work on the behalf of its members to get the most compensation and to be compensated fairly based on the value that they deliver. There&#8217;s a level of expectation that they have that is just not realistic. And they are adding to a set of challenges that this business is already facing that is quite frankly very disruptive and dangerous.&#8221;
“I find it very ironic that we are all gathered here today in unity in front of an entity that is run by Disney,” Cranston preached. “We’ve got a message for Mr. Iger: I know, sir, that you look through things in a different lens. We don’t expect you to understand who we are. But we ask you to hear us and beyond that to listen to us when we tell you: We will not be having our jobs taken away and given to robots.”

Dearden and Cranston met on the CBS show &#8220;Airwolf&#8221; in 1986. At the time, both were with involved with other people but soon started dating, and in 1989 they tied the knot. They have one daughter together.
Chris Hemsworth&#8217;s career skyrocketed after he took on the superhero role of &#8220;Thor&#8221; in 2011. Since that time, he&#8217;s played an essential role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in numerous Marvel films.
Recently, the 39-year-old actor learned that he inherited two copies of the APOE4 gene (one each from his mother and his father), which showed he was at greater risk of developing Alzheimer&#8217;s disease than others.

&#8220;It really triggered something in me to want to take some time off,&#8221; the actor said. &#8220;And since we finished the show, I&#8217;ve been completing the things I was already contracted to do. Now when I finish this tour this week, I&#8217;m going home and I&#8217;m going to have a good chunk of time off and just simplify. Be with the kids, be with my wife.&#8221;

Actor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/bryan-cranston">Bryan Cranston</a> said he’s ready to be done with acting within three years so he can focus on his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/marriage">marriage</a> instead.
The 67-year-old “Breaking Bad” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities">alum</a> made the comments during a recent interview with <a href="https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/article/bryan-cranston-interview-2023">British GQ</a>. Cranston said after asking his wife, Robin Dearden, to support him in his career for decades, it’s time for him to “change the paradigm.”
&#8220;For the last 24 years, Robin has led her life holding onto my tail,&#8221; the actor said. &#8220;She’s been the plus one, she’s been the wife of a celebrity. Cranston said they’ve been going to therapy together since before they were married.

The couple met in the 1980s while filming a scene on the CBS military drama “Airwolf.” Both were in other relationships when they met but found themselves dating soon after and tied the knot in 1989. They have one daughter, Taylor, who was born in 1993. 
 Dearden called Cranston “the funniest man I’d ever met” during a People <a href="https://people.com/movies/bryan-cranston-met-wife-robin-dearden-while-holding-her-captive-on-airwolf/">interview</a> in 2016.
“It was 30 years ago that we met on that terrible TV show,” Cranston said of their initial meeting. “It changed both of our lives.”

“I think it was serendipitous, because, as Robin says, if we had been unencumbered at the time and started dating, she doesn’t think that we would have stayed together,” he said. “But because she had a boyfriend and I had a girlfriend, we were able to flirt without the heavy sexual tension, but there was sexual tension, let me tell you! But not the heavy sexual tension, not the ‘faux pas’ sexual tension, but it was there.”

Actor Bryan Cranston, who shot to international fame playing Walter White in “Breaking Bad,” reiterated his belief that the “Make America Great Again” slogan has racist implications.
Cranston spoke on CNN with host Chris Wallace when making his remarks. Wallace asked him about his <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDs1PkfeNqc&amp;t=1029s">recent conversation</a> with Bill Maher in which Cranston implied that the “Make America Great Again” slogan had racist implications.
“This conversation I had with Bill, we&#8217;re talking about critical race theory,” Cranston said to Wallace. “And I think it&#8217;s imperative that it&#8217;s taught, that we look at our history much the same I think that Germany has looked at their history involvement in the wars, one and two, and embrace it and say this is where we went wrong. This is how it went wrong.”
“When I see the Make America Great Again, my comment is, do you accept that that could possibly be construed as a racist remark?” he continued. “And most people, a lot of people go, how could that be racist? Make America Great Again? I said so just ask yourself from an African-American experience, when was it ever great in America for the African-American? When was it great? So if you&#8217;re making it great again, it&#8217;s not including them.”
Maher had protested Cranston’s supposition that Americans were innately racist, saying to him, “The people who are running things, I just don’t think that that’s — their mindset is ‘Let’s be racist to people of color.’”
“They don’t understand it but they are innately that way,” Cranston responded. “You recognize your experience. What we don’t recognize is the privilege, the advantage that you have. Look at Congress: look at the makeup of Congress. You cannot deny that older white men are the predominant factor in Congress.”
“It’s 400 f***ing years that we’ve dealt with this, and our country still has not taken responsibility or accountability,” Cranston declared.

“For what?” Wallace asked.
“For the history of the systemic racism that’s in this country,” Cranston insisted.
“What should we do more?” Wallace pressed.
“Well, I mean, for one thing, critical race theory, I think is essential to be teaching. &#8230; I mean, teaching how the race trade and racism is systemic in everything we’ve done in government, in social activities. It’s embedded in it,” Cranston told him.
“When you look at this guy’s hat, ‘Make America Great Again,’ what do you think about that?” Cranston asked Maher. “Would you &#8230; also accept that there’s a large swath of people in this camp and other people like him, who have no clue that that’s a dog whistle? That they think ‘Make America Great Again’ is for everyone? But when was it great? Let me ask you this: When was it great for African Americans in this country? When was it great?”
“Well, if you’re applying for college now, I would say now,” Maher replied.

After two long years of waiting, “Better Call Saul” fans will finally see the triumphant return of the drama series as the sixth and final season kicks off tonight. 
Some fans of the “Breaking Bad” prequel will have already re-watched the fifth season or the entire series in anticipation of the premiere. It would make sense, considering the season 5 finale aired in April 2020, which feels like a lifetime ago.
For anyone who doesn’t have that kind of time, there are a few key elements to remember before watching the first two episodes of season 6, which will both air back-to-back on AMC beginning at 9 p.m. Monday.
The official “Better Call Saul” YouTube channel published a 15-minute recap to catch everyone up on the most important events from Season 5. In it, fans watch as Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) explains to Kim Wexler why he’s taking on the Saul Goodman persona going forward. Ignacio “Nacho” Varga breaks the news to Jimmy/Saul that “When you’re in, you’re in” after the lawyer helped with a favor for the cartel. This is the beginning of a downward spiral that will end with Jimmy putting the “criminal” in criminal lawyer.

Later, Howard Hamlin of HHM insults Jimmy by offering him a job at the law firm his older brother Chuck helped found. Jimmy gives his response by lobbing a bowling ball at Howard’s Jaguar. Gus Fring saves Mike Ehrmantraut’s life and enlists him as a “soldier,” saying they both operate with the same goal in mind: revenge. In Fring’s case, he’s trying to get back at the Salamanca family, while maintaining the pretense of being business partners all working for the same drug cartel.
Kim and Jimmy seem like they’re going to break up following the debacle with Mesa Verde Bank and Everett Acker, but then they get married instead. Then Kim and Jimmy decide to hatch a plot to take down Howard with Kim taking the reins.
Nacho betrays Lalo at the behest of Fring in a coup at his hacienda. Lalo escapes, figures out it was Nacho who left the gate open to let the hitmen in, and walks away furious. The recap ends with a reminder about the flash-forward scenes to a post-&#8220;Breaking Bad&#8221; world where Saul is managing a Cinnabon in Omaha while hiding from his mortal enemies. But while there, someone recognizes him and makes him say the famous line, “Better call Saul.”
The final season of the award-winning drama is composed of 13 episodes split into 7 and 6, with the first half airing April-May and the second portion premiering in July. “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan is back to work on the final season alongside co-creator Peter Gould. During a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-bad-duo-walter-white-and-jesse-pinkman-will-appear-in-better-call-saul-season-6">recent panel discussion</a>, Gould confirmed that Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) will be making cameos in the final season.

‘Better Call Saul’ Recap: What To Remember Before Season 6 Premiere Tonight

Bryan Cranston can afford to be picky with acting roles. The 62-year-old industry veteran took on the part of a lifetime in “Breaking Bad,” solidifying his status as a Hollywood legend with the bank account to match. He’s been discerning with projects ever since the series ended in 2013. 
Most recently, Cranston walked away from the chance to direct a play about an Englishman who foils an attempt by the Ku Klux Klan to turn his fishing lodge into a meeting place. Instead of taking the helm of “The Foreigner,” the “Malcolm in the Middle” alum chose to star in a different play entirely.
“It is a privileged viewpoint to be able to look at the Ku Klux Klan and laugh at them and belittle them for their broken and hateful ideology,” Cranston told the <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2022-02-16/bryan-cranston-interview-power-of-sail-geffen-playhouse">Los Angeles Times</a>. 
“But the Ku Klux Klan and Charlottesville and white supremacists — that’s still happening and it’s not funny. It’s not funny to any group that is marginalized by these groups’ hatred, and it really taught me something.”
The actor recalled laughing at the story and, according to The Times, this helped him realize his “white privilege.” Instead of going with that opportunity, he headed in a new direction.
“And I realized, ‘Oh my God, if there’s one, there’s two, and if there’s two, there are 20 blind spots that I have … what else am I blind to?” Cranston continued. “If we’re taking up space with a very palatable play from the 1980s where rich old white people can laugh at white supremacists and say, ‘Shame on you,’ and have a good night in the theater, things need to change, I need to change.”
Now the actor is headlining a production at L.A.’s Geffen Playhouse, but it has a different tone compared to “The Foreigner.” 
The LA Times described Cranston’s character Nichols in his production “Power of Sail” as, “an aging, highly respected Harvard professor who faces intense backlash for inviting a white nationalist and Holocaust denier named Carver to speak at his annual symposium. As student protests intensify, Nichols presses forward, claiming his intention is to give Carver and his repugnant ideas a thorough dressing down in a debate.”
Nichols is described as a  “free-speech absolutist” who believes “The answer to hate speech is more speech.”
Cranston apparently said the play took on new meaning following the death of George Floyd and “transformed Cranston, who says in these troubling years he came face to face with his own ‘white blindness’ and privilege.”
The play questions if free speech should have limits or if some rhetoric should be prohibited. 
“Power of Sail” is described as questioning these concepts. The Times said, “The play asks if there should be limits to free speech, and if so, why? It tests the boundaries of the free speech ideal by examining the traditional arbiters of that speech — those who get to decide whose voice is lifted and whose voice is quashed. It suggests the existence of a moral compass in an age when truth is often called relative by special-interest groups opposed to it.”
“There need to be barriers, there need to be guard rails,” the Emmy Award winner told the publication. “If someone wants to say the Holocaust was a hoax, which is against history … to give a person space to amplify that speech is not tolerance. It’s abusive.”
Cranston insists he’s just trying to make people think about these kinds of issues. “A good play may not change your life, but it could change your day,” he said. “To go deeper, a play can also stimulate the mind. It can make you question your thought process — your dogma. It could challenge you.”
