Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) is asking the Department of Health and Human Services to release a trove of emails and communications written by the Biden administration’s high-profile, transgender-identifying Assistant Secretary Richard “Rachel” Levine.
“It is crucial that Congress and the Executive Branch, including HHS, partner together to uncover any collusion or wrongdoing, including the suppression of evidence-based medicine by previous administrations, which can cause irrevocable harm to our country’s children,” the Louisiana Republican, who <a href="https://www.help.senate.gov/chair/about" target="_blank" rel="noopener">chairs</a> the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP), wrote in the letter to HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
In the letter, Cassidy requests emails and communications between Levine, members of his staff, and several medical organizations that support gender transitions for children, including the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Endocrine Society, that were exchanged during the Biden presidency.
“HHS remains committed to reversing the harmful policies enacted by Levine and the Biden Administration that did irreparable harm to children, and to ensuring biological reality guides our approach to public health. The Department will respond directly to Senator Cassidy,” Health and Human Services press secretary Emily Hilliard told The Daily Wire.
The Biden administration was known for its <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-admin-releases-report-promoting-transgenderism-abroad-for-inclusive-democracy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">embrace</a> of radical gender ideology and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-media-lied-about-child-gender-surgeries-and-heres-the-proof" target="_blank" rel="noopener">push</a> to provide experimental sex-rejecting interventions, such as puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries, to children and young adults.
Cassidy asks in the letter that HHS provide communications between Admiral Levine and White House personnel, including “former President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and staff,” about “gender affirming care” and the transgender agenda.

“Former Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Assistant Secretary for Health Admiral Levine and staff, exercised significant political influence over WPATH and possibly other medical and professional organizations,” Cassidy writes.
“That influence appears to have been directed toward and ultimately resulted in the removal of age limits for adolescent gender transition surgical interventions, including mastectomies, breast augmentation, facial surgeries, genital surgeries, and hysterectomies, from WPATH’s Standards of Care (SOC-8).”
Cassidy asked HHS to provide the requested emails, documents, and communications by March 5, 2026.
“Americans have every right to know the scientific rigor of the data behind policies and guidelines issued by medical and professional organizations, particularly given that these guidelines are widely used and relied upon by health care providers and patients, including minors,” Cassidy said.

Rep. Julia Letlow (R-LA) launched her bid for the United States Senate on Tuesday, which paves the way for a competitive primary battle between her and Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy.
Letlow earned the endorsement of President Donald Trump over the weekend. In 2021, Cassidy voted to impeach Trump in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The senator did play a critical role in getting Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. confirmed in 2025.
“Highly Respected America First Congresswoman, Julia Letlow, of the wonderful State of Louisiana, is a Great Star, has been from the very beginning, and only gets better!” Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115913818366988479">posted</a> to Truth Social on Saturday.
“I know Julia well, have seen her tested at the highest and most difficult levels, and she is a TOTAL WINNER! A Proud Mother of two children, Julia is a wonderful person, has ALWAYS delivered for Louisiana, and would continue doing so in the United States Senate,” he added.
In her launch, Letlow said that in “a state as conservative as ours, we shouldn’t have to wonder how our senator will vote when the pressure’s on. Louisiana deserves conservative champions, leaders who will not flinch.” The congresswoman took office in April 2021 due to a special election triggered by her husband’s death, as Rep.-elect. Luke Letlow died from COVID-19 shortly before his swearing-in, leaving behind Julia and their two children.
Before her announcement, Cassidy <a href="https://x.com/BillCassidy/status/2013640184697344158">responded on X</a> that he’s confident he will come out on top.
“Congresswoman Letlow called me this morning to say she was running. She said she respected me and that I had done a good job. I will continue to do a good job when I win re-election. I am a conservative who wakes up every morning thinking about how to make Louisiana and the United States a better place to live,” he wrote.
When the Trump endorsement dropped, he wrote that he is “proudly running for re-election as a principled conservative who gets things done for the people of Louisiana. If Congresswoman Letlow decides to run I am confident I will win.”
The Cook Political Report currently ranks the general election race as solidly Republican. POLITICO has reported that Cassidy is one of three Republicans running for Senate this cycle without the president’s backing yet, including Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX).
It’s unknown whether Trump will endorse any candidate in the heated Texas Senate primary between Cornyn, Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Rep. Wesley Hunt. In Maine, Collins has not formally launched her bid yet, but is expected to run without any major primary challengers.

WASHINGTON — Republican lawmakers continue to turn up the pressure on the Trump administration to crack down on the widespread mailing of abortion drugs across the country. 
Senate and House Republicans repeated calls for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reverse Biden-era regulations allowing the abortion pill mifepristone to be sent through the mail. The calls come as data shows that abortions have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/despite-dobbs-more-babies-are-still-being-aborted-in-the-united-states">only increased</a> after Roe v. Wade was overturned, largely fueled by mail-order drugs. 
The first call to action came during a Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pension (HELP) Committee Wednesday morning, which focused on the dangers of the abortion pill. The committee hearing was packed with both pro-abortion and pro-life activists. 
“I urge Secretary Kennedy and Commissioner Makary to complete the safety review of mifepristone that they both promised us during their confirmation hearings. Republican members of this committee and many other senators expect an answer. At an absolute minimum, the previous in-person safeguards should be restored, and it should be done immediately,” said Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA), the chair of the HELP Committee. 
During Cassidy’s hearing, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill testified Wednesday that abortions have been rising in her state. 
“Indeed, abortions have tragically increased in Louisiana and other pro-life states since Dobbs because of the Biden administration&#8217;s actions,” she said. “Shield laws in some states protect providers from liability and effectively nullify laws in our states. Their purpose is to make it more difficult to sue or prosecute individuals in those states where abortion drugs are prohibited.&#8221; 
After the hearing, Murrill told reporters that she had briefly flagged the issue for Makary, but that there had been no further developments. She said she would like to see quick action on the issue.
During the hearing, Democrat Senator Patty Murray, who called the hearing a “sham,” cited the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pro-lifers-demand-answers-from-trump-admin-after-shocking-abortion-pill-approval">recent approval</a> of another generic form of the abortion pill in September by the FDA. That approval shocked pro-life advocates and lawmakers, prompting Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) to say he had completely lost faith in the agency. 
Murray later cut off Dr. Monique Wubbenhorst, another witness, as she spoke about the women delivering fully developed dead babies after taking the abortion pill.
Medication abortions, which are the most common abortion method, are facilitated by a woman taking mifepristone and misoprostol. After a pregnant woman takes mifepristone, the unborn child is cut off from the nutrients it needs to survive and is effectively starved to death.
Calls to reverse the mail regulations were echoed Wednesday afternoon as Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), one of President Donald Trump’s closest supporters, led a press conference demanding that the mail-order abortion pill regulations be scrapped.
“The pro-life community is not asking too much of Republican administrations in Congress to repeal the Biden policy. I think that’s why we got elected,” Graham said. “A Biden policy that undercuts the state&#8217;s rights approach because the Biden policy allowed the abortion pill to be sent through the mail, regardless of what the state of law is, effectively destroying every pro-life law in the country at the state level.”
Appealing directly to the president, Graham said it was “time to deal with this issue.”

The conference, organized by Family Research Council President Tony Perkins, was attended by Cassidy, Hawley, Senator James Lankford (R-OK), Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), and Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN). 
“There are more abortions committed today in the United States than when Roe was the law of the land,” Hawley said. “Do the American people have any right to protect life in their states, in their localities, nationally?”
Pro-life groups have grown increasingly impatient with the Trump administration&#8217;s action toward the abortion pill. Some groups have called for Makary to be ousted from the FDA, while others have accused him of slow-walking a study on the safety of the drug. 
Perkins said Wednesday that there would be a “political problem” for those who “sold out the pro-life movement.” 
“This policy could be changed overnight, and it should be. Politics aside, this is an issue of the sanctity of human life, it is an issue of the promises made to protect the unborn,” he said. “The states took the initiative, they took the action, and they&#8217;ve been denied the right to see those walls effectively put into place through the undermining of the FDA policy.”
Those sentiments were shared by several pro-life leaders who watched the abortion pill hearing. 
“Mailing the abortion pill is illegal, immoral, and deadly. And I&#8217;m calling on President Trump and Secretary Kennedy to reverse the Biden administration&#8217;s policies and return to requiring an in-person doctor&#8217;s visit for anyone being prescribed mifepristone,” Doug Truax, the CEO of Restoration of America, told The Daily Wire. 
Shawn Carney,  the president and CEO of 40 Days for Life, said it was time “for the government to intervene and to finally protect women and their unborn children from a dangerous, predatory industry.&#8221;
Live Action President Lila Rose said that the abortion drug should be pulled from the market altogether. 
&#8220;This hearing must be a turning point. The Trump administration should immediately restore in-person safeguards, fully investigate the mounting evidence of harm, and act decisively to protect women and children,” she said. “But more than that, the FDA must reverse its reckless approval of mifepristone and pull this dangerous drug from the market altogether.”

The Senate is set to hold a hearing next week on the dangers of the abortion pill, as pro-life groups urge the Trump administration to roll back Biden-era rules allowing the drug to be shipped through the mail, The Daily Wire has learned. 
The hearing will be led by Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee. Cassidy has pushed for the Trump administration to end the mail-order abortion policies and release a safety study on the effects of mifepristone, the active drug used in medication abortions. 
“As a doctor and a strong pro-life conservative, I am committed to protecting mothers and the unborn. The medical evidence is clear: chemical abortion drugs not only kill innocent babies, but also put women in serious danger,” Cassidy told The Daily Wire. “As Chairman of the HELP Committee, I look forward to discussing how to uphold a culture of life and prioritize women‘s safety over political ideology.”
The hearing, titled “Protecting Women: Exposing the Dangers of Chemical Abortion Drugs,” will take place at 10:00 am in the Dirksen Senate Office Building. 
Medication abortions, now the most common abortion method, involve the use of two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. After a pregnant woman takes mifepristone, the unborn child is cut off from the vital nutrients it needs to survive and is effectively starved to death. Misoprostol is then used to induce labor and expel the deceased baby from the mother.
The hearing comes as Cassidy has pushed the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for answers after it <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pro-lifers-demand-answers-from-trump-admin-after-shocking-abortion-pill-approval">approved</a> another generic form of mifepristone in September, much to the surprise of pro-life advocates, and left in place rules allowing abortion pills to be mailed. In response, more than 51 senators <a href="https://www.lgraham.senate.gov/public/_cache/files/db3c8d4f-f16b-4393-9005-13461dcde9c2/letter-from-senator-graham-et-al-to-hhs-and-fda-re-mifepristone.pdf">asked</a> for the FDA to reverse course and reinstate the in-person dispensing requirement. 
Earlier this year, Cassidy and 16 other GOP senators wrote a <a href="https://www.help.senate.gov/rep/newsroom/press/chair-cassidy-leads-pro-life-republicans-seeking-answers-on-fda-approving-dangerous-chemical-abortion-drug">letter</a> to FDA Commissioner Marty Makary in October asking if the agency was conducting a study into the dangers of the abortion pill and whether it was aware of cases in which women had been coerced into taking the drugs or given them without their knowledge. 
In one recent incident, an Ohio surgeon <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ohio-surgeon-accused-of-forcing-abortion-pill-on-sleeping-girlfriend?author=Leif+Le+Mahieu&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Ohio+Surgeon+Accused+Of+Forcing+Abortion+Pill+On+Sleeping+Girlfriend">was charged</a> after allegedly forcing his girlfriend to take an illegally obtained abortion pill, resulting in the death of her unborn child.
&#8220;The in-person dispensing requirement also helped guard women from being coerced into having chemical abortions against their will,&#8221; the senators wrote.
During his confirmation hearing, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he would conduct a study into the abortion pill. That study has yet to be released, and some pro-life groups have accused the FDA of slow-walking it for political reasons. 
Data has shown that allowing abortion pills to be shipped by mail has resulted in tens of thousands of abortions in states like Texas and Tennessee, where medication abortions are technically illegal. This largely happens under &#8220;shield laws&#8221; in states like New York, which bar prosecution of those who ship abortion pills into states with abortion bans.

WASHINGTON—Congress may have reopened the government, but it still has to decide what to do with the Obamacare subsidies at the center of the shutdown fight. Senator Bill Cassidy thinks they should go straight to American families — not health insurance companies.
Cassidy, who chairs the Health, Education, Labor &amp; Pensions Committee, told The Daily Wire this week that he was working with Republicans and Democrats alike on a proposal that would give Americans money to pay for care directly, which he says would empower patients and lower costs.
&#8220;There&#8217;s things you have to work through,&#8221; the Louisiana Republican said about his colleagues across the aisle. &#8220;Some think, ‘wait a second,’ that the preconception is, consumer-driven health care — it has to be funded out of the paycheck. I&#8217;m saying, ‘no, it&#8217;s going to be pre-funded with money that would otherwise go to the insurance companies.'&#8221;
Cassidy explained that the enhanced premium subsidies, which were extended during the coronavirus pandemic and are set to expire at the end of this year, would be deposited into Health Savings Accounts controlled by patients.
During the shutdown, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer proposed a plan to extend ACA subsidies for one year. Republicans called the plan &#8220;dead on arrival.&#8221;
On November 8, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-WY) spoke on the Senate <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XF6vZPmcvlo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">floor</a> and said he believes Americans “deserve quality, affordable health care.”
“And they haven’t gotten that with Obamacare. Reforms are needed that actually lower costs, that protect the taxpayers,&#8221; Barrasso said. &#8220;The American people deserve a full debate about the unaffordability of Obamacare. Senator Schumer’s offer does nothing to address the cost of health care, does nothing to lower premiums, does nothing to reassure the American people.&#8221;
Barrasso said Schumer’s proposal makes “insurance companies richer and taxpayers poorer.”
In a shutdown-ending deal, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) promised Democrats a vote on a healthcare proposal by the second week of December. However, it is unclear what that may be.
On Monday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) held a press conference and <a href="https://democraticleader.house.gov/media/press-releases/leader-jeffries-affordable-care-act-tax-credits-expire-next-month-and" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slammed</a> Republicans for their refusal to extend the tax credits and said “tens of millions of Americans are about to experience dramatically increased premiums, copays, and deductibles.”
Jeffries previously said he wouldn’t support a one-year extension and was pushing for a three-year extension for the subsidies. However, given that the Senate wouldn&#8217;t even vote on a one-year extension, there&#8217;s little to no chance this would pass.
Cassidy spoke about the proposal on the Senate <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RwcNIRxjBY" target="_blank" rel="noopener">floor</a> last week and proposed the idea to give credits directly to patients and empower them to manage their own health care decisions.
He said Obamacare has “tried to make health insurance affordable” by “throwing billions at it.”
“The problem with that — that doesn’t make healthcare affordable, it just makes the health insurance premium less expensive for those who are on exchanges,” Cassidy said at the time.
“Let’s fix health care, and let’s give the patient the power,” he continued.
President Donald Trump has also <a href="https://x.com/SenBillCassidy/status/1987176209936232807?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoken</a> in support of giving money directly to the people, most recently in a Nov. 8 Truth Social post.
“We were so totally in sync,&#8221; Cassidy told reporters of the president on Monday. &#8220;He wants to take dollars that would go to an insurance company and send them to the individual.&#8221;
Initially, Cassidy pitched his proposal through flexible spending accounts — but he said he believes Health Savings Accounts would be the better route.
“As it turns out, it&#8217;s more practical, and I can tell you why, to do it through the Health Savings Account, which he proposed, but it&#8217;s still the same thing,&#8221; Cassidy said. &#8220;I think it&#8217;s a melding of a vision, and to say it&#8217;s a melding implies they were different beforehand. This is exactly what he&#8217;s expressing, exactly what I was expressing.&#8221;
The proposal has publicly received support from Sen. Bernie <a href="https://x.com/SenBillCassidy/status/1987244986044158318?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Moreno</a> (R-OH) and interest from Sen. Maria <a href="https://x.com/SenBillCassidy/status/1987670490031554716?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cantwell</a> (D-WA).
“I think this has got a lot of appeal to conservatives,&#8221; Cassidy told reporters. &#8220;I love it, but I think it&#8217;s got a lot of appeal to people who are left of center, too.&#8221;
While the bill text has not yet been released, Cassidy is confident that if the Senate were to pass the idea, the president would ask House Speaker Mike Johnson to consider it on the floor, and the president will sign it because “it&#8217;s consistent with the policy that he has put forward.”
The Senate Finance Committee is <a href="https://www.finance.senate.gov/hearings/the-rising-cost-of-health-care-considering-meaningful-solutions-for-all-americans">holding a hearing</a> on the enhanced Obamacare subsidies on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON—A Virginia school district has been accused of pushing minor Hispanic students to abort their unborn babies — a move that Louisiana Republican Senator Bill Cassidy is warning may have violated federal law.
In a letter exclusively obtained by The Daily Wire, the Louisiana Republican calls on Fairfax County Public Schools to explain <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/whistleblower-uncovers-secret-abortion-scandal-at-virginia-high-school-parents-deserve-better">whether it paid for the abortion</a> of a young girl&#8217;s baby, without her parents&#8217; knowledge or consent, and warns the district that &#8220;a school official pressuring minor students to obtain covert abortions using school funding is illegal and, if proven, requires concrete action by your school board to hold the perpetrators accountable.&#8221;
Fairfax County Public Schools did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Daily Wire. However, in August, Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid claimed that the district had only just learned about the allegations that week and stated that such behavior would never have been tolerated.
&#8220;We will see this investigation through with the utmost seriousness, taking swift and appropriate action once we have the facts,&#8221; Reid <a href="https://www.fairfaxtimes.com/articles/governor-orders-criminal-probe-into-alleged-abortions-at-centreville-high-school/article_a1c3bc41-9b17-4ac1-8187-70eaa7de4ca3.html">said</a>. “It is my commitment to share the key findings of that investigation as soon as I am able.&#8221;
Cassidy, a physician who chairs the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, writes that in 2021, school officials arranged and paid to abort the baby of a young girl, a minor student, and &#8220;attempted to do the same for another student&#8221; without the consent of these girls&#8217; parents. The incident took place at Centreville High School, where school social worker Carolina Diaz allegedly pressured two girls to abort their babies and used school funds to pay for the abortions. A whistleblower teacher says that she brought her concerns to school administrators seven times without success.
&#8220;One 17-year-old girl ultimately had an abortion, while another student who was five months pregnant fled from the abortion clinic in fear after being pressured to have an abortion,&#8221; Cassidy wrote. &#8220;Both of these young girls allege that the school social worker, Carolina Diaz, pressured them into having abortions and told one of the girls that she &#8216;had no other choice.&#8217; On top of the already horrific situation of a school official pressuring minor students to obtain  abortions, it is alleged that school funds were used to pay for the abortion.&#8221;
The senator expresses deep concerns that Fairfax County Public Schools &#8220;seems to be concealing the fact that these allegations were brought to the school&#8217;s attention years ago but ignored by school officials.&#8221;
&#8220;Public reporting states that a Centreville High School teacher, Zenaida Perez, claims to have notified school officials about the abortions seven separate times since May 2022, only to be ignored and then retaliated against for blowing the whistle on this conduct,&#8221; wrote Cassidy. &#8220;However, in an email to Centreville High School staff and families on August 7, 2025, you claim that the school board  only learned about these allegations &#8216;earlier this week.'&#8221; 
Virginia Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin <a href="https://www.governor.virginia.gov/newsroom/news-releases/2025/august/name-1054950-en.html">directed state police to open a criminal investigation</a> into the allegations on August 13, noting that school funds may have been used to abort babies, including local, state, and federal funds.
&#8220;I am deeply concerned with the allegations that Fairfax County Public Schools officials arranged for minors to get abortions without parental consent and may have misused public funds to pay for them,&#8221; Youngkin said at the time. &#8220;I am directing the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation to open a full criminal investigation into the matter immediately.&#8221;
FCPS receives about $50 million a year in financial aid from the federal government, Cassidy noted, and the Hyde Amendment prohibits federal education funding from being used to fund abortions.
&#8220;As Chairman of the HELP Committee, I am determined to ensure that federal education funds are not being misused in violation of the law and parents’ rights to protect their children,&#8221; wrote Cassidy. &#8220;Given the seriousness of the allegations and the potential that federal funds were used by school officials to  pressure minor students into receiving covert abortions without parental consent, it is imperative  for the Committee to determine whether any federal funds were misused and whether the Hyde Amendment or other relevant laws were violated.&#8221; 
The senator called on FCPS to share, by October 6, their reporting requirements when school officials become aware that a student is pregnant. He also requested that the district share &#8220;what actions, if any, are taken in response to a school&#8217;s awareness of a student&#8217;s pregnancy.&#8221;
&#8220;In your response,&#8221; he notes, &#8220;please detail the reporting structure and provide any school-issued guidance or policy documents.&#8221; 
Sarah Zagorski, senior director of public relations and communication at Americans United for Life, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/whistleblower-uncovers-secret-abortion-scandal-at-virginia-high-school-parents-deserve-better">argued to The Daily Wire in early September</a> that &#8220;parents deserve better&#8221; than the alleged treatment at the school. She mentioned a Fairfax County school board meeting where parents, educators, and community leaders asked questions about the alleged coerced abortions, questioning &#8220;whether these were isolated incidents or part of a broader pattern of overriding parental rights and disregarding state law.&#8221;
&#8220;The allegations are deeply troubling given both of the girls involved were underage. [Teacher and whistleblower Zenaida Perez] says that one student, who was five months pregnant and wanting to keep her baby, said she felt like she &#8216;had no choice.&#8217; The other girl told Perez she was terrified because her legal guardians did not know about her abortion.&#8221;
&#8220;Children need protection and parental guidance, especially when faced with an unplanned pregnancy, not forced secrecy by adults attempting to usurp fundamental rights of parents to make decisions regarding the well-being of their children,&#8221; wrote Zagorski. &#8220;Girls from marginalized communities, including Hispanic girls from Centreville High School, deserve better than betrayal from people they should trust and cover-ups by school bureaucrats.&#8221;

Virginia School May Have Illegally Pushed Minor Students To Have Abortions, Senator Warns

The Trump administration said Wednesday that it had fired Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Susan Monarez because she was “not aligned&#8221; with the president&#8217;s agenda of &#8220;Making America Healthy Again.&#8221; 
Lawyers for Monarez, who has directed the CDC for less than a month, stated that she would not leave, claiming she had not been adequately informed of her removal. Monarez also alleged that she was being “targeted” for refusing to follow a “political agenda.”
The Department of Health and Human Services <a href="https://x.com/HHSGov/status/1960818490614415869" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> on Wednesday afternoon that Monarez was no longer part of the agency.
&#8220;Susan Monarez is no longer director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,&#8221; HHS posted on X. &#8220;We thank her for her dedicated service to the American people. [Secretary Kennedy] has full confidence in his team at the [CDC] who will continue to be vigilant in protecting Americans against infectious diseases at home and abroad.&#8221;
The removal came after Monarez did not commit to rescinding approvals for certain COVID vaccines when pressed by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/08/27/susan-monarez-cdc-director-ousted/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=wp_the7-tracking-trump&amp;carta-url=https%3A%2F%2Fs2.washingtonpost.com%2Fcar-ln-tr%2F4468879%2F68af893f3816071e609ae717%2F64467e96035e7012142988e7%2F16%2F56%2F68af893f3816071e609ae717" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The outlet added that Monarez turned to Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA), the chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Labor, and Pensions, for help while facing pressure from Kennedy.
Cassidy <a href="https://x.com/SenBillCassidy/status/1960895774079799344">said</a> on X that Monarez&#8217;s &#8220;high profile departure&#8221; will require &#8220;oversight&#8221; from his committee.
In response to the announcement from HHS, lawyer Mark Zaid said that Monarez had no intention of leaving the position. 
&#8220;When CDC Director Susan Monarez refused to rubber-stamp unscientific, reckless directives and fire dedicated health experts, she chose protecting the public over serving a political agenda,&#8221; Zaid said. &#8220;For that, she has been targeted. Dr. Monarez has neither resigned nor received notification from the White House that she has been fired, and as a person of integrity and devoted to science, she will not resign.&#8221;
Monarez is also represented by Abbe Lowell, who represents Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook. Trump recently fired Cook, who is likewise refusing to leave her position.

White House spokesman Kush Desai responded to the accusations, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/27/health/cdc-monarez-kennedy-vaccines.html">saying</a> Monarez had been &#8220;terminated&#8221; because she was “not aligned with the President’s agenda of Making America Healthy Again.” 
Zaid <a href="https://x.com/MarkSZaidEsq/status/1960914637219893636">said</a> the White House had provided a “legally deficient” notification of Monarez’s removal from the CDC. 
“Our client was notified tonight by White House staff in the personnel office that she was fired. As a presidential appointee, senate confirmed (sic) officer, only the president himself can fire her,” he posted on X. 
Monarez was confirmed by the Senate 51-47 on July 29.
At least three other top CDC staffers have resigned in protest following the Trump administration’s move to oust Monarez. Those departing include Demetre Daskalakis, Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases; Dr. Daniel Jernigan, Director of the National Centers for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases; and Debra Houry, the agency’s chief medical officer.
The FDA rolled out new guidelines for the COVID vaccine on Wednesday, approving its use for those 65 and older and limiting approval for those between the ages of 5 and 64.

Senator Bill Cassidy(R-LA) on Thursday announced that the Senate will investigate American Muslims for Palestine’s activities on college campuses, alleging that nine individuals associated with the group have ties to Hamas or Hamas-linked organizations.
“I launched an investigation into American Muslims for Palestine demanding answers about their activities on college campuses,” the Louisiana Republican said at a hearing discussing rising anti-Semitism on college campuses. “This group’s leaders have ties to Hamas and helped create the group Students for Justice in Palestine.”
Cassidy launched the investigation under the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, which he chairs.
In a letter to AMP, Cassidy accused the group of having “extensive” ties to Hamas, which is a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). He added that the group has been actively involved in organizing college students and helped create and fund Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), which has been banned or suspended on several campuses for creating security concerns.
In the letter, he listed the nine individuals who were identified by Jonathan Schanzer, the Executive Director at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, with troubling ties.
They include AMP board member Salah Sarsour, who helped raise money for the Holy Land Foundation, which was founded by Hamas’s Deputy Director, Mousa Abu Marzook. The Holy Land Foundation was shuttered by the United States government after it sent $12.4 million out of the United States to “willfully contribute funds, goods, and services to Hamas.” Sarsour also reportedly sent funds to Adel Awadallah, who helped lead Hamas’s Al-Qassam Brigades before he was killed by Israeli forces in 1998.
Others listed who helped raise funds for the Holy Land Foundation include AMP event speakers Jamal Said and Kifah Mustafa. Mohammed El-Mezain, who helped lead the Holy Land Foundation, spoke at an AMP-sponsored event in 2023 was also listed.
AMP’s executive director, Osama Abuirshaid, is listed due to his previous work for the newspaper of Islamic Association for Palestine, which was founded with startup money from Marzook and provided “media, communications, and fundraising services” to the Holy Land Foundation. According to Cassidy’s letter, in the newspaper Al-Zaytounah, he “published interviews that highlight his communications with Hamas leader Abu Marzook and other Hamas leaders in Gaza . . . [and] in 2014 . . . was featured on the website of Hamas’s self-declared military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades.”
Rafeeq Jaber, who helped prepare tax forms for AMP’s partner organization, AJP Education Foundation, was listed. He previously served as president of the Islamic Association for Palestine along with Sufian Nabhan,who is also listed for being a former member of AMP’s national board and serving as Michigan representative for the Islamic Association for Palestine.
Abdelbaset Hamayel, who is also listed on AMP tax forms and was described in 2014 as AMP’s executive director also served as “secretary general” of the Islamic Association for Palestine and a representative for KindHearts which was also shuttered for its ties to the Holy Land Foundation. Kindhearts’ founder, Khaled Smaili, reportedly worked for Global Relief Foundation, which was sanctioned by the Treasury Department in 2002 for funding al-Qaeda.
AMP Chairman Hatem Bazian  was “a frequent speaker at IAP events” and “helped raise money for Kindhearts in 2004,” and a professor at the University of Pennsylvania according to the letter.
Abuirshaid has addressed students directly at Columbia University, George Washington University. Bazian has addressed students at UC Berkeley and where he teaches at the University of Pennsylvania.
Cassidy’s letter goes on to say that AMP has helped to recently organize SJP conferences at college campuses including at Rutgers Universities and the National Students for Justice in Palestine conference at UCLA.
“These campuses have become sites for a combined total of approximately 300 arrests and detentions,” Cassidy <a href="https://freebeacon.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2025-03-26-BC-to-Hatem-Bazian.pdf">wrote</a>. “UCLA, where AMP helped to organize the National SJP conference, has been the site of more than 200 arrests or detentions.”
Cassidy said that AMP’s ties to SJP groups “raise serious questions about AMP’s involvement in planning, organizing, and funding campus demonstrations that have posed significant threats to campus safety.”
Cassidy’s letter added that more than 60 colleges and universities are under investigation for Title VI violations relating to antisemitic harassment and discrimination.
In a letter to AMP, Cassidy demanded documents about the group’s actions on college campuses including their financial ties and its associates&#8217; ties to Hamas and Hamas-affiliates by April 9.
Cassidy sent letters to several colleges and universities, including UCLA, George Washington University, Columbia University, and Barnard College, requesting information about the activities of SJP and AMP. Additionally, Cassidy sent a letter to the Justice Department outlining the investigation and seeking further information.

Senate Launches Investigation Into Pro-Palestinian Group For Ties To Hamas

President Donald Trump&#8217;s desire to dismantle the Department of Education could be fully realized with legislation being put together by a top Republican senator.
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) announced plans to introduce a bill shortly after Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-signs-order-dismantling-department-of-education" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed</a> an executive order on Thursday to &#8220;facilitate&#8221; the closure of a federal agency the current administration feels has not adequately helped student achievement and &#8220;return education authority&#8221; to the states and local communities.
&#8220;I agree with President Trump that the Department of Education has failed its mission,&#8221; Cassidy said in a statement <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-signs-order-dismantling-department-of-education" target="_blank" rel="noopener">given</a> to The Daily Wire. &#8220;Since the Department can only be shut down with Congressional approval, I will support the President’s goals by submitting legislation to accomplish this as soon as possible.&#8221;
Trump&#8217;s second-term administration has already taken steps toward paring back the Cabinet-level agency, however, because Congress passed a bill to create the Department of Education that was signed by then-President Jimmy Carter in 1979, another one is needed in order to fully take it apart.
Cassidy is the chairman of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, meaning whatever bill he puts forth will have positive momentum within the GOP-led Senate.
Still, Cassidy&#8217;s legislation faces the prospect of a filibuster. A three-fifths majority — or 60 votes — would be needed to overcome that threshold. As Republicans only have a slim majority in the Senate, they would need a handful of Democrats or independents to support moving forward with the bill — an unlikely outcome.
The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, <a href="https://x.com/Heritage/status/1899821520655896837" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> a video earlier this month suggesting possible workarounds, such as using the budget reconciliation process that requires only a simple majority, moving to repeal the agency&#8217;s mandatory programs, or acting on recision requests from the president.
On the House side, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has already introduced a bill for this session of Congress that simply declares the Department of Education &#8220;shall terminate on December 31, 2026.&#8221; That bill, which has 32 co-sponsors, has so far been <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/899/all-actions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">referred</a> to the House Committee on Education and Workforce for consideration.

Andy Ogles (R-TN) <a href="https://x.com/RepOgles/status/1902856097385587093" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> on X that he was &#8220;drafting the Make Education Great Again Act to codify [Trump&#8217;s] historic executive action gutting the woke and wasteful Department of Education. It’s time for Congress to return education to the states and defend the rights of parents across our nation.&#8221;

Dr. Jay Bhattacharya promised on Wednesday to bring sunlight to the National Institutes of Health if confirmed as the agency’s director. 
Speaking before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, Bhattacharya rebuked the NIH for its behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic, which he said did great damage to trust in scientists and academic institutions. Bhattacharya, an outspoken critic of the COVID lockdowns, was one of the first to express concerns about the safety and efficacy of vaccine mandates. 
A professor at the Stanford School of Medicine, Bhattacharya promised to bring greater transparency to the American people about the NIH&#8217;s research, which he said had failed in its fundamental mission.
&#8220;The mission of the NIH is to address the health needs the American people have and to expand life expectancy of the American people. And we have not achieved that. It&#8217;s flatlined,&#8221; he said.
This failure, paired with a massive loss in &#8220;trust in the public health establishment&#8221; during COVID, made clear the need for the NIH to reestablish trust with the American people, Bhattacharya said. 
Bhattacharya rose to prominence for his opposition to COVID lockdowns and later his concerns that COVID vaccines posed some health risks, specifically for young men. 
&#8220;Science should be an engine for freedom. Knowledge and freedom &#8230; it shouldn&#8217;t be pushing mandates for vaccines like the COVID vaccines,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The role of the scientist should not be to say that you can&#8217;t send your kid to school for two years.&#8221;
Reflecting on his experience during the COVID pandemic, Bhattacharya said that he was &#8220;tremendously proud&#8221; to advise Florida&#8217;s response to the pandemic, which sent kids back to schools way earlier than California with little to no negative impact.
Bhattacharya condemned the censorship that was pushed by the Biden administration against critics of the vaccine mandates at the time. He said during the pandemic there was a problem of &#8220;censorship and restriction&#8221; of science&#8221; and that the &#8220;root problem was that people who had alternative ideas were suppressed.&#8221;
Bhattacharya said that he himself was the victim of pressure campaigns by the Biden administration and that the Freedom of Information Act requests he filed during the pandemic were returned fully redacted.
&#8220;You can&#8217;t have trust unless you are transparent,&#8221; Bhattacharya said, saying that that Americans should be able to &#8220;see all of the activities of the NIH openly.&#8221;
Other topics discussed during the hearing included proposed cuts to NIH funding of universities and research institutions, as well as vaccines and autism. Moderate Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) pushed Bhattacharya to disavow Trump&#8217;s cap on funding for indirect funding, which he said he would evaluate if confirmed.
Bhattacharya would help allocate tens of billions of dollars in funding if confirmed by the Senate.

Republicans will head into 2025 with the White House, control of both the U.S. House and Senate, and big expectations from voters to do something with it. Influential conservative activist Charlie Kirk says the party should make lawmakers that get in the way of the Trump agenda pay the price, but warned that the base will have to carefully pick its spots.
Kirk, 31, sat down with The Daily Wire at Turning Point USA’s America Fest in Phoenix, Arizona where he candidly broke down which Republicans are on his primary list. The Turning Point USA founder is a staunch Trump supporter who often speaks with the president-elect, and he is one of the top high profile conservative voices arguing that Republicans owe it to the American people to fall in line with Trump&#8217;s agenda.
&#8220;I find it very perplexing that Joe Biden gets all of his nominees and Republicans are happy to vote for many of them,&#8221; he told The Daily Wire. &#8220;Some Republicans give a harder time to Donald Trump&#8217;s nominees than Joe Biden&#8217;s nominees. There are Republicans that voted for Merrick Garland. There are Republicans that voted for [Alejandro] Mayorkas. There&#8217;s Republicans that voted for Lloyd Austin. No questions. And yet when it comes to Donald Trump&#8217;s nominees, it&#8217;s like the most challenging thing.&#8221;
Kirk said he has an exact &#8220;criteria&#8221; for Republicans that should be challenged through a primary in a way that won&#8217;t be &#8220;reckless or irresponsible&#8221; for the party.
&#8220;We&#8217;re gonna find Republican senators that have the following criteria. Number one, they&#8217;re in deep, deep, deep red states. So if we were to replace them, there will not be a general election issue, right? So we don&#8217;t want to try to go after someone like Thom Tillis, who I&#8217;m not a huge fan of, who might be in a razor thin race in North Carolina which would lose us a senate seat.&#8221;

&#8220;Number two, we&#8217;re gonna find people that have a repeated pattern of not listening to the will of their voters on very core issues that matter to them, border, immigration, foreign aid, size and scope of government, and then of course, whether or not they voted for Trump&#8217;s impeachment and also Trump&#8217;s cabinet,&#8221; Kirk continued. &#8220;And the final thing is this: we want to try to create, not a lesson, but I guess that&#8217;s one way to say it, where senators get out of line, they will be removed.&#8221; 
One senator on his list is Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who was first elected in 2014.
&#8220;He voted for the impeachment of Donald Trump,&#8221; said Kirk. &#8220;People don&#8217;t remember that. Bill Cassidy voted for the impeachment of Donald Trump. He&#8217;s trying to play like he&#8217;s some sort of, you know, friend of Donald Trump now. He&#8217;s got to go. He has routinely been the biggest supporter of sending money to Ukraine despite our border being wide open, which is not popular with the voters of Louisiana. So he&#8217;s on the top of the list.&#8221; 
Cassidy, who has met with a number of Trump nominees in recent weeks, including <a href="https://x.com/petehegseth/status/1866988332292747431?s=46">Pete Hegseth</a> and <a href="https://x.com/kash_patel/status/1869834089961754716?s=46">Kash Patel</a>, met with Trump in June 2024 and <a href="https://www.cassidy.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/cassidy-releases-statement-following-meeting-with-president-trump/">issued a statement at the time</a> promising to work with Trump if he became the next president. In a a Saturday statement to The Daily Wire, a spokesman for the senator said, &#8220;Senator Cassidy continues to work for the state of Louisiana and for the United States. He looks forward to working with President Trump so that our country does great again over the next four years. This is what Louisiana voters care about.”
But not all the senators that have found themselves on the other side of the conservative base meet Krik&#8217;s criteria. Kirk and others are unhappy with Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa for her recent behavior towards Trump nominee Pete Hegseth, but she doesn&#8217;t fully meet their criteria for the primary list, particularly since she&#8217;s going to be in a competitive race.
&#8220;And here&#8217;s how it would work,&#8221; he noted, &#8220;if we were to remove Joni Ernst, the National Republican Senate groups would be like, &#8216;Oh, your fault.&#8217; They would rather make an example out of us try to make an example out of Joni Ernst. So we&#8217;re trying to be wiser than that.&#8221;

The Turning Point founder also mentioned Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota, James Risch in Idaho, and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, who is part of leadership.
&#8220;There needs to be consequences when you don&#8217;t listen to the will of the voters,&#8221; Kirk said. &#8220;So we&#8217;ll see how they vote for the cabinet. That will definitely play into this.&#8221;
&#8220;Bill Cassidy, there&#8217;s nothing he can do at this point,&#8221; he added. &#8220;He voted to impeach Donald Trump, of which we believe you need to be retired.&#8221; 
Rounds and Capito did not respond to requests for comment, but a spokesman for Risch told The Daily Wire: “Senator Risch will vote to confirm President Trump’s nominees, just as he did during President Trump’s previous term.”
Questioned on what role he believes Trump will play on all of this, Kirk said he doesn&#8217;t think Trump would actively campaign against incumbents, but that his silence could be just as impactful.
&#8220;I think his silence will be the most powerful thing,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Not endorsing a candidate will end up being an endorsement if that were to happen, because look, he has to still work with the US Senate. He&#8217;s got to get ambassadors through, he&#8217;s got to do stuff. I don&#8217;t imagine him endorsing challengers. Bill Cassidy, he might, I don&#8217;t want to speak for him or for his team, but someone who actually voted to impeach him, I think that would probably reach to a level where he might do something, but probably not.&#8221; 
&#8220;It&#8217;s gonna be primary season sometime soon,&#8221; he added with a grin. 
As for what role Turning Point would play in primary season, Kirk appeared energized and ready to go. He says his organization will play a &#8220;heavy role,&#8221; including drafting the candidates, invigorating the grassroots, raising money for independent expenditures, and ballot chasing. 
&#8220;Republican primaries are different than general elections,&#8221; he explained,  &#8220;Our ask is not something extreme, the Washington insiders are trying to say Turning Point is just trying to cause problems. Well, not really, they&#8217;re the ones that cause the problems for not listening to their voters. If you vote like Ted Cruz or vote like Mike Lee, we think you&#8217;re a hero. You decided to vote a certain way that is against what your voters want.&#8221;
&#8220;We just want a Republican Party that is as conservative as its voters,&#8221; he argued. &#8220;Some people would say, and it sounds good, &#8216;Oh well, Charlie, we just won a huge election. Why are you picking these fights?&#8217; That&#8217;s exactly actually why — because the people gave us a mandate and the senators aren&#8217;t listening to that mandate.&#8221;
&#8220;So it&#8217;s time for some sorting out,&#8221; he concluded.

Sen. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/bernie-sanders" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bernie Sanders</a> (I-VT) introduced a bill Wednesday that would shave 8 hours off the standard 40-hour work week that has been around for several decades.
A <a href="https://www.sanders.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/32-Hour-Workweek-Act_Fact-Sheet_FINAL.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">summary</a> from Sanders said the legislation, called the &#8220;Thirty-Two Hour Workweek Act,&#8221; would amend the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 by lowering the maximum hours threshold for overtime compensation for non-exempt employees.
The <a href="https://www.sanders.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/WIL241041.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bill</a> would require overtime pay at time and a half for workdays longer than eight hours and overtime pay at double a worker&#8217;s regular pay for workdays longer than 12 hours, the summary said. It would also &#8220;protect&#8221; workers&#8217; pay and benefits to ensure no loss in pay.
&#8220;Moving to a 32-hour workweek with no loss of pay is not a radical idea,” Sanders said in a <a href="https://www.sanders.senate.gov/press-releases/news-sanders-introduces-legislation-to-enact-a-32-hour-workweek-with-no-loss-in-pay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>. &#8220;Today, American workers are over 400 percent more productive than they were in the 1940s. And yet, millions of Americans are working longer hours for lower wages than they were decades ago. That has got to change.&#8221;
He added, &#8220;The financial gains from the major advancements in artificial intelligence, automation, and new technology must benefit the working class, not just corporate CEOs and wealthy stockholders on Wall Street. It is time to reduce the stress level in our country and allow Americans to enjoy a better quality of life. It is time for a 32-hour workweek with no loss in pay.&#8221;
As chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP), he held a <a href="https://www.help.senate.gov/hearings/workers-should-benefit-from-new-technology-and-increased-productivity-the-need-for-a-32-hour-work-week-with-no-loss-in-pay" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hearing on the bill</a> Thursday. The legislation has the support of several labor unions and a companion bill in the House, which was introduced by Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA).
As polls <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/22/workers-overwhelmingly-want-a-4-day-workweekon-one-condition.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">show</a> a high level of support for a hypothetical four-day work week, there has been a push at the state level, in places such as <a href="https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local/mass-bill-that-would-create-4-day-workweek-to-be-heard/3190043/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Massachusetts</a> and <a href="https://www.abc27.com/pennsylvania/pennsylvania-lawmaker-proposes-4-day-workweek-bill/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pennsylvania</a>, to give the 32-hour model a try. <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/09/19/countries-with-shortest-and-longest-workweeks.html#:~:text=Kiribati%3A%2027.3%20hours%20average%20per,per%20week%20per%20employed%20person" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Companies and other countries</a> have already begun to move in that direction, with data showing some <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/02/24/worlds-biggest-4-day-workweek-experiment-shows-big-health-benefits.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">positive results</a>. However, not everyone is on board with the legislation being proposed by Sanders.
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) <a href="https://twitter.com/SenBillCassidy/status/1768287808320381303" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> a &#8220;32 hour work week for 40 hours of pay is one more example of the federal government promising free money. Nothing is free. It would kill jobs and increase inflation.&#8221;

Roger King, senior labor and employment counsel at the HR Policy Association, <a href="https://www.help.senate.gov/hearings/workers-should-benefit-from-new-technology-and-increased-productivity-the-need-for-a-32-hour-work-week-with-no-loss-in-pay" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warned</a> during the hearing on Thursday that the proposal from Sanders would cause a &#8220;productivity gap&#8221; in many industries that could then lead to &#8220;added costs&#8221; for consumers. He also said the bill would &#8220;interfere&#8221; with &#8220;flexibility&#8221; for employees and cause a &#8220;worker shortage&#8221; for employers.
