Colombian President Gustavo Petro sparked outrage this week after posting the phrase “Heil Hitler” on social media in response to a newspaper column endorsing conservative presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, a law-and-order candidate who has openly aligned himself with many of United States President Donald Trump’s policies.
Petro’s post consisted solely of the words “Heil Hitler” and appeared as a reply to a social media post promoting a <a href="https://www.elespectador.com/opinion/columnistas/felipe-zuleta-lleras/abelardo-el-cirujano-que-colombia-necesita/">column</a> by Colombian commentator Felipe Zuleta Lleras. The column praised De la Espriella as the candidate best positioned to restore security, reduce the size of government, and reverse the policies of Colombia’s political left.
The article argued that Colombia needs “order, authority and economic freedom,” praising De la Espriella’s proposals for a military crackdown on organized crime, the construction of mega-prisons, tax reductions, and a dramatic reduction in the size of the state.
“Voting for him is not simply electing a president; it is opting for a surgeon determined to operate the nation’s structural problems without his pulse shaking,” the column concluded, translated from spanish.
Petro’s disturbing response came as Colombia <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1w2xvwq8g9o">heads toward a June 21 presidential runoff</a> election that has become a referendum on the legacy of the left-wing president’s administration.
Sunday’s first-round vote saw De la Espriella finish first with 43.7% of the vote, narrowly ahead of left-wing Sen. Iván Cepeda, an ally of Petro, who received roughly 41%.
De la Espriella, a businessman and attorney known as “El Tigre,” has campaigned on a tough-on-crime platform, promising a major military offensive against cartels and guerrilla groups, expanded cooperation with the United States, and a dramatic reduction in Colombia’s bureaucracy. The conservative candidate has frequently praised Trump and advocated stronger security partnerships with Washington.
Petro, meanwhile, has often clashed with Trump and has criticized what he describes as excessive American influence in Latin America. Although relations between the two leaders improved after a White House meeting earlier this year, the Colombian president has repeatedly attacked U.S. foreign policy and aligned himself with left-wing movements throughout the region.
The “Heil Hitler” post is particularly notable given Petro’s long history of invoking Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany in political disputes.
Immediately following Hamas’s October 7, 2023 terrorist attack on Israel, Petro repeatedly <a href="https://www.aa.com.tr/en/africa/colombian-president-says-those-who-say-he-is-anti-semitic-are-ignorant-/3022238">compared</a> Israel’s military operations in Gaza to Nazi Germany. He accused Israel of operating “concentration camps,” suggested that Hitler was being “reborn” through modern political movements, and drew comparisons between Israeli military actions and the Holocaust.
Those remarks prompted sharp criticism from both Israeli and American officials.
Israeli diplomats accused Petro of making hostile and antisemitic statements after he repeatedly refused to explicitly condemn Hamas while escalating his criticism of Israel.
Deborah Lipstadt, the U.S. State Department’s Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism, later testified before Congress that Petro’s <a href="https://thecitypaperbogota.com/news/united-states-condemns-petro-for-crossing-red-line-with-antisemitic-remarks/">comments</a> had crossed a “red line.”
“It is offensive and unfortunate that leaders like Petro have compared what is happening with Hitler,” Lipstadt said during a House hearing focused on rising antisemitism in Latin America. She also criticized Petro’s rhetoric for undermining peace efforts and contributing to concerns within Colombia’s Jewish community.
Petro has repeatedly denied accusations of antisemitism, arguing that his criticism is directed at the Israeli government rather than Jewish people. In October 2023, he claimed accusations that he supported Hamas or harbored anti-Jewish views were the product of “ignorance.”
Yet his latest social media post demonstrates a continued willingness to invoke Nazi imagery against political opponents.
The controversy comes at a particularly sensitive moment for Colombia as voters prepare to choose between two starkly different visions for the country’s future. De la Espriella has promised an aggressive crackdown on crime, closer ties with the United States, and sweeping free-market reforms. Cepeda, backed by Petro, has pledged to continue many of the current administration’s policies, including negotiations with armed groups and expanded social programs.
As of publication, Petro had not publicly elaborated on the meaning of his “Heil Hitler” post or offered any clarification regarding the remark, nor has the post been deleted.

In the minds of most journalists, all human history can be summed up with the words, “Rome fell, then Hitler came.” A few more accomplished scholars among the chattering classes might be able to distinguish between the fall of Rome’s republic, followed by the empire, and the fall of the empire, followed by a thousand years of hideously faith-infused darkness. But basically, to journalists, all signs of political or cultural decadence — whether it’s a Republican being elected or some other Republican being elected — are omens that American Rome is about to collapse followed by the rise of American Hitler.
“A Confessing Church for America’s Weimar Moment,” reads a headline in The Dispatch. “We must not let the shooting of Charlie Kirk become Trump’s Reichstag fire,” writes a genius at The Guardian. “Welcome to Weimar 2.0,” headlines a book excerpt by the catastrophist Robert D. Kaplan in Foreign Policy. And that’s not even counting the continual Hitler forecasts on cable TV. One could almost feel sorry for der old Führer, his psycho ass getting dragged out of hell every ten minutes to serve as a warning to us all.
And look, yes, it’s true, the United States is in one of those periods of dissolution and transition that come upon every nation from time to time. So too was Weimar, the unstable republic that rose up in the wake of Germany’s crushing defeat in World War I. Such periods are often marked by polarized politics, destructive sexual profligacy wrongly celebrated as liberation, and art forms informed by and infused with the general cultural decay. So with America. So with Weimar.
Beyond that, however, the comparison is a shallow one. For one thing, the image of Weimar among our clerisy is skewed with bias. Watch any movie set in the era — the musical Cabaret is a good one — or any television series — Babylon Berlin is my favorite — or read histories like Peter Gay’s famous Weimar Culture. You’ll get the sense that you’re learning about a time of delightful but doomed sexual and artistic creativity, with benign but hapless socialists slowly falling beneath the darkening Nazi shadow.
But no. The undisciplined sex lives, the anti-freedom politics of both the left and the right, and the shocking but ultimately ephemeral cultural productions were all one thing, all part of the same process of decay. Weimar — and the world wars that preceded and followed it — marked the end of a civilization — the greatest civilization that has yet existed on planet Earth — the civilization that was Europe from around 1345 to 1914. It was this, in fact, that gave Hitler his rhetorical super power: he diagnosed the decadence correctly. He just didn’t realize he was its ultimate manifestation. Ah well. Even a mass murdering racist lunatic can’t be right all the time.

So the United States is in a decadent state and so was Weimar, and decadence anywhere looks like decadence everywhere. History does repeat itself.
But it repeats itself for a reason. It’s the same reason a person’s life tends to repeat itself. The human race, like each of its individual members, has a nature, a character. Like everything that exists, character is bounded by its defining limits. Those limits cause it to express itself in a finite number of patterns. Over time, those patterns are certain to reassert themselves in recognizable forms.
The patterns of a healthy society or person will be shaped something like a rising spiral. Certain arcs of activity will recur over and over, but they will recur in increasingly wise, creative and productive ways. There will be periods of dissolution but they will be what is sometimes referred to as “chaos leading to a higher plane.” You can trace such a pattern in the plays of William Shakespeare. You can find it in the history of England between Elizabeth and the end of World War II.
The history of a rotten society or person will form a descending spiral, the repeated arcs of foolishness and evil growing ever darker and more self-destructive. The life of every tyranny is like this. The life of every addict too.
Then there’s the history of an ignorant or neurotic society or person. This will simply look like a circle. The subject goes round and round on a level track while uttering occasional gasps of wonder at having found themselves at a place they’ve passed a hundred times before but have a hundred times forgotten. You know people like this. Every now and then, they announce they’ve had some smack-the-forehead revelation that will change their lives forever. Then they return to the exact same ideas and behaviors they’ve had before. Perpetually primitive tribes are also like this, no matter how we want to romanticize them.
In short, times of dissolution will indeed be followed by a transition. But Hitler — get ready for it — is not the only possible outcome. The time surrounding the French Revolution in Great Britain showed many of the usual signs of decadence, but the Victorian era that followed was arguably Britain’s greatest age. So with the United States in the 1920’s and 30’s. Those decadent days led to the mighty 1950’s and a new American half century. As with each individual, what follows a nation’s dissolution all depends on the essential health of the nation’s character.
Where then are we?
It seems obvious to me that the primary cause of our current decline is the falling away of the Baby Boomers. My age cohort has dominated the political and cultural landscape for seventy years. Now, we’re played out and heading for the exits. Our accomplishments were many. We made hypocritical virtue signaling an art, introduced self-destructive drug use to the general population, slowed the rise of black Americans by burying them under the smothering dependencies of the Great Society, and wasted all the money accumulated by every generation before us along with some money that will be accumulated by the generations to come. We also popularized the personal computer so, like, yay for us.
What the United States will become when we are gone is, of course, not yet clear, but it’s a good bet it will be defined by the way we use the new forms of communication that have been and are still being generated by technology. Who or what will dominate those engines of culture is largely what all the current division, panic, bullying and violence is intended to decide.
Periods like this are often resolved by the rise of a powerful personality. Will this person shape the coming Zeitgeist or merely ride its wave? Your answer will depend on whether you agree with Thomas Carlyle that “the History of the world is but the Biography of great men,” or with Tolstoy who said, “great men—so called—are but the labels that serve to give a name to an event.” Like the question of nurture or nature, this question is impossible to resolve, probably because, like the question of nature and nurture, the binary itself is an illusion. But as I say, contra the journalists, Hitler is not the only model for such era-defining personalities. George Washington and Queen Victoria are far more benign examples of the breed. Luther and Napoleon were mixed blessings. History is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.
When we scan the horizon for the coming definitive personality, it’s pretty hard to see the horizon with the gigantic Donald Trump standing in the way. So yeah, maybe he’s the guy. He has no coherent ideology so his effect may not be a lasting one. But he does bear all the marks of a Tolstoyan Godzilla. Like that monster created by nuclear blasts, Trump is the product of our generation’s eruption of materialist vulgarity. But he is also the avatar of the American everyman in our time. Like that character — much maligned by the elites who feed off his bounty — he is blunt, common sensical, creative, independent and bold. If he uses these traits to blast away such fatal nonsense as open borders, transgenderism and socialism — if he restores our simple patriotism and can-do spirit — the imprint of his nature may well be Trump’s legacy to the new age.
But this is still America. Perhaps the great figure that will shape our 21st Century is not Trump or any other individual, but we, the people. In that case, Weimar, with its sexual libertinism, its artistic Dadaism and its polarized politics, actually does serve as a guide — a guide to what each and every one of us should not do.
Let we, the people, then, like healthy men with healthy minds, eschew the habits of decadence.
Get your sex life in order. Give up porn and feminism and other such perversions, and yoke your desires to their natural purposes: the creation of families, the solidifying of marriages and the maintenance of self-governing homes.
In politics, murder your isms. Follow the facts instead. Do what works, what keeps people free, what makes free people happy, what encourages the wealthy but protects the poor. Our founding principles are still the best guides ever invented to achieving those ends. Use them. Make our leaders use them too.
And in the culture, forget the overrated shock of the new. In the arts as in life, follow one rule: Make something beautiful. Whether it’s a movie or an invention, a business or a family, a community at peace or simply a life lived lovingly and well. Turn your back on every ugliness and cruelty. Head down the path of beauty and, like the prodigal son, you will see your Father running to greet you from afar.
And that’s another thing — one last thing — love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind. In general, they neglected to do that in Weimar and ended up worshipping the devil instead. No matter what anyone tells you, those are the only two choices. Choose right, and I guarantee you, Hitler will stay in hell — or on cable TV, which amounts to the same thing — where he belongs.

Tucker Carlson shocked nearly everyone last week when he implied that Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and one of the most revered heroes of World War II, had to abandon Christianity in order to turn on Adolf Hitler.
Bonhoeffer attempted to assassinate the Nazi leader and was murdered by the Third Reich in 1945. Bonhoeffer’s actions are almost universally regarded as heroic — but not to Carlson, who <a href="https://www.newsmax.com/us/tucker-carlson-dietrich-bonhoeffer-adolf-hitler/2025/11/13/id/1234491/">declared</a> recently that Bonhoeffer had simply &#8220;decided &#8230; Christianity is not enough, we have to kill the guy.”
Carlson held Bonhoeffer up as a warning to conservatives who criticize antisemitism on the Right, saying, &#8220;once you start calling people Nazis, we really have no choice but to start shooting them,&#8221; Carlson said.
So much sloppy thinking, so little time. 
Carlson is right that falsely labeling someone a “Nazi” or a “fascist” today paints a target on that person. It was reckless, for example, for California Governor Gavin Newsom to call White House advisor Stephen Miller <a href="https://stream.org/gavins-gambit-newsom-doubles-down-on-the-fascist-slander/">a fascist</a>, prompting leftists in Miller’s neighborhood to dox him, plastering telephone poles and lampposts with Miller’s home address.
But what does any of this have to do with Dietrich Bonhoeffer? He wasn’t sloppily using “Nazi” as a slur against his political opponents, the literal Nazis. Nobody was falsely claiming that the ordinary enforcement of just laws amounted to genocidal terror. Genocidal terror was written into the laws of a regime which had seized power in a crisis, suspended the constitution, outlawed all opposition, and stripped Jews of citizenship. 
Literal Nazis, who called themselves “Nazis,” were filling concentration camps with non-violent political dissidents, and preparing a war openly designed to conquer, enslave, and exterminate the peoples of neighboring nations. The Nazi blueprint for obtaining “Lebensraum” in Poland and the Soviet Union, <a href="https://wwv.yadvashem.org/odot_pdf/Microsoft%20Word%20-%206247.pdf">Generalplan Ost</a>, envisioned wiping out some 80 million Slavs by either direct murder or slow starvation, to be replaced by German colonists. 
Carlson’s absurd criticism of Bonhoeffer is rooted in a fundamental misrepresentation of Christianity and its teachings. Despite Jesus’ words about turning the other cheek on a personal level, Christianity was never rigidly pacifist.
By the time of St. Augustine, the Church had developed the “Just War” doctrine, narrowly defining occasions when military action by the state was morally good and right. That teaching is widely accepted by most Christian churches, and codified by the Roman Catholic Church in its <a href="https://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/war-and-peace/excerpts-from-catechism-of-the-catholic-church-safeguarding-peace-1997">Catechism</a>.
Catholic teaching holds that a Just War is one in which “the damage inflicted by the aggressor on the nation or community of nations must be lasting, grave, and certain,” and “all other means of putting an end to it must have been shown to be impractical or ineffective.” There also “must be serious prospects of success” and “the use of arms must not produce evils and disorders graver than the evil to be eliminated.”
The language above refers to the actions of the state, not individual citizens. On the surface, it seems only to apply to decisions by nations such as Great Britain and France, whose declarations of war on Germany were obviously just. 
But the Just War analysis doesn’t only apply to states. As I explained in my recent book, “<a href="https://www.calamopress.com/store/no-second-amendment-no-first">No Second Amendment, No First”,</a> during the Reformation and Counter-Reformation religious persecution by intolerant monarchs drove thinkers in both the Jesuit and the Calvinist traditions to ask if those conditions could justify a civil war, a rebellion against a tyrant. Most of them answered “Yes,” and Christian political thinking began for the first time to countenance the overthrow of evil governments by their people. The men who removed King Charles I, and rebelled against French monarchs during the Wars of Religion, cited such arguments. 
So would later rebels, right here in America. Our own Declaration of Independence is actually an eloquent argument that the misgovernment of the 13 colonies by the British parliament and crown amounted to tyranny, and met the Just War requirements, making armed resistance not just permissible but obligatory.
The anti-Nazi resistance to which Dietrich Bonhoeffer belonged was steeped in this same tradition, and saw its efforts to overthrow a wicked tyranny in wartime as perfectly compatible with the broad Christian tradition. Their actions had nothing in common with the violence fostered by irresponsible leftist zealots in our non-tyrannical country in peacetime, which enjoys free elections and a free press.

Former President Joe Biden&#8217;s embattled son Hunter Biden admitted on a recent podcast that President Donald Trump is not, in fact, the next incarnation of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler — but then he claimed that was only because Hitler, unlike Trump, had a &#8220;plan.&#8221;
Biden, during an interview on the &#8220;<a href="https://youtu.be/YRfS0YrKGRc?si=XrvxnaZYKJyHn_z1&amp;t=2143">Wide Awake Podcast</a>,&#8221; claimed that Trump differed from the German dictator largely because Hitler had been driven by &#8220;ideology&#8221; — whereas he believed Trump was only driven by &#8220;corruption&#8221; and a &#8220;white nationalist&#8221; world view.
Biden began with a question — namely, how did the German people allow Hitler&#8217;s rise to power — and he suggested that the United States might be going through a similar situation.

Biden, who has spent most of his adult life profiting from his father&#8217;s political positions, went on to complain that President Trump&#8217;s family has continued to make money while he served as president. His comments echoed those of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dems-send-hunter-bidens-father-to-lecture-americans-on-trump-profiting-from-presidency">his father</a>, the former president, who made almost the same complaint days earlier.
&#8220;Has anyone noticed how much the Trump family has made while he’s been president? A reported $1.8 billion,” Biden began, his tone soft. He abruptly began shouting as he added, “Can you imagine if any other president in American history did that? Can you imagine what would happen?&#8221;

Hard-left Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) once again showed the country just how unhinged her rhetoric has become, doubling down on her claim that President Donald Trump is a “wannabe Hitler,” defending her word choice as “accurate” in a CNN interview on Sunday.
Crockett, a darling of the progressive Left and a fixture on MSNBC, first made the comparison on July 20 during an appearance on “Alex Witt Reports.” In that segment, she accused the GOP of being complicit in shielding Trump, declaring: “We have someone that is occupying the White House, and, as far as I&#8217;m concerned, he is an enemy to the United States. … I have called him so many things, but this wannabe Hitler, for sure.”
Rather than walk back the Adolf Hitler comparison — an absurd and grotesque minimization of real historic evil — Crockett leaned in. Pressed by CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union” on Sunday about whether elected officials should avoid inflammatory rhetoric in an age of increasing political violence, Crockett responded:

I think that my responsibility is to be transparent and to be honest. And the reality is that we are living in a time in which this administration and this regime is not interested in making sure that people understand history. We need to understand why they are so problematic. And so I am using that language because it is accurate language when we see the consolidation of power, when we see them trying to chill speech of jokesters, when we&#8217;re seeing all of this.  That is a playbook out of Hitler. And I won&#8217;t deny it.

Apparently, for Crockett, using the Holocaust as a political prop isn’t off-limits — so long as it helps demonize Trump and his supporters.
This isn’t an isolated outburst. Crockett has made a name for herself by trafficking in vulgarity and personal attacks. Back in March, at an event hosted by the Human Rights Campaign, she <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/governor-hot-wheels-jasmine-crockett-mocks-greg-abbotts-disability">mocked</a> Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s disability, calling the wheelchair-bound Republican “Governor Hot Wheels” and a “hot-a** mess.”
Crockett’s pattern of incendiary language goes beyond insults. In mid-August, she smeared black conservatives who might consider voting Republican, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jasmine-crockett-black-voters-arent-republicans-because-they-cant-hang-out-with-the-kkk">saying</a>: “Most black people are not Republicans simply because we just is (sic) like, ‘Y’all racist. I can&#8217;t hang out with the KKK and them!’”
This came on the heels of her claim in May that Republicans are “inherently violent” and that most of their brutality is “against people with a little bit of melanin.”
Last spring, Crockett appeared to flirt with open incitement, saying of X owner Elon Musk: “All I want to see happen on my birthday is for Elon to be taken down.” Attorney General Pam Bondi blasted the statement as “domestic terrorism,” warning that Crockett was playing with fire by making veiled threats while claiming innocence.
Crockett now sits on the DOGE Oversight Committee — ironically claiming to fight misinformation while pushing Hitler analogies, racial smears, and ableist insults. Whether it&#8217;s mocking the disabled, calling conservatives Nazis, or insinuating that violence is just part of being Republican, Crockett has become the unfiltered id of the progressive movement.

Right-wing political commentator Tucker Carlson&#8217;s latest podcast episode featured a Cornell professor who suggested that there&#8217;s a good argument to be made for the United States backing Nazi leader Adolf Hitler during World War II instead of fighting the Nazis with Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union.
David Collum, a chemistry and chemical biology professor at the Ivy League school, told Carlson in an episode published on Wednesday that he read a book about the &#8220;revisionist history of World War II&#8221; and came away believing that &#8220;the story we got about World War II is all wrong, actually.&#8221;
&#8220;I think that&#8217;s right,&#8221; Carlson replied.
&#8220;One can make the argument [that] we should have sided with Hitler and fought Stalin,&#8221; Collum added. &#8220;Patton said that. And maybe there wouldn&#8217;t have been a holocaust, right? But Stalin was awful by any metric, and we weren&#8217;t his ally.&#8221;
In the episode, which can be viewed in full <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orgvAk7JhBI&amp;t=3943s">here</a>, Carlson offered no pushback to Collum&#8217;s claim that a U.S.-Nazi alliance would have been preferable during World War II, or to the bizarre idea that the U.S. siding with Hitler would have somehow prevented the Nazi regime from murdering six million Jews.
The Nazis <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/articles/zkxwgwx">began</a> instituting antisemitic laws in 1935, four years before the beginning of World War II and six years before the United States declared war on Germany. Jewish persecution intensified in 1937 and 1938 when Nazis began throwing people into concentration camps, and nearly 100 Jews were killed during the Kristallnacht pogrom. Hitler began creating concentration camps specifically for Jews in 1940, a year before U.S. troops joined its European allies to fight the Nazis. The largest mass murder of Jews under Hitler took place in 1942, just months after the United States had joined the fight.
As for Collum&#8217;s claim that Patton wanted to side with Hitler, there&#8217;s no historical record to back it up. While U.S. General George S. Patton believed that the Soviet Union would pose a major threat to the United States, he never advocated for siding with Hitler to fight Stalin. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill also said in the years following World War II that the Soviet Union was &#8220;in some ways more formidable than Hitler,&#8221; but he never suggested that it would have been better to fight Stalin alongside the Nazis.
Diana West, the author of the book that Collum credited for his revisionist take on World War II, said on Thursday that her book &#8220;does not argue for anything remotely like aligning with Hitler.&#8221;

The former Fox News host was blasted after clips of Collum&#8217;s comments began circulating on social media.
&#8220;So now we should’ve backed Hitler? Let’s see if these sh*t heads are denounced by any but a handful of us on radio or TV,&#8221; <a href="https://x.com/marklevinshow/status/1958345094001553896">said</a> conservative broadcaster Mark Levin.
Carlson <a href="https://x.com/TuckerCarlson/status/1958552781242991095">responded</a> to Levin, writing, &#8220;Settle down, Mark. Nobody endorsed Hitler.&#8221;
During his interview with Carlson, Collum also claimed that when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, &#8220;It wasn&#8217;t a war.&#8221;
&#8220;It was a police action,&#8221; Collum said. &#8220;And they weren&#8217;t killing people. They were moving troops across the border.&#8221;
Nearly 60 people were killed and 170 people were wounded on the first day of Russia&#8217;s invasion, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-says-57-people-killed-first-day-russian-invasion-2022-02-24/">according</a> to Ukrainian authorities.
The Cornell professor added that it only became a war because &#8220;NATO wanted a war,&#8221; suggesting that the U.S.-European alliance was the aggressor in the conflict.
&#8220;And so, it morphed from being a police action, which I think Putin was trying to throw a fast ball past NATO&#8217;s chin and saying, &#8216;Back off on this whole NATO thing,'&#8221; Collum said.
&#8220;That&#8217;s correct,&#8221; Carlson replied.

Americans may be shocked by Zohran Mamdani’s radical politics. But the communist upstart’s views wouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone familiar with his father.
Mahmood Mamdani, a professor at Columbia University, claimed on a panel at the Jaipur Literature Festival in New York in 2022 that Hitler was inspired by Abraham Lincoln, that the antisemitic Nuremberg laws were patterned after American laws, and that “the Nazi political project was shared by the allies.”
The <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFATiIOE0bM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discussion</a> centered around the release of his book, “Neither Settler Nor Native: The Making And Unmaking Of Permanent Minorities,” which “explores the nature of the nation-state, and the path to a reimagined, decolonized future.”
Mahmood Mamdani began by saying that “America is the genesis of what we call settler-colonialism” around the world. He goes on to say that Adolf Hitler got the idea of the Holocaust from President Abraham Lincoln:
“With the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln generalized the solution of reservations, they herded American Indians into separate territories. For the Nazis, this was the inspiration — Hitler realized two things: one, that genocide is doable. It is possible to do genocide, that’s what Hitler realized. Second thing Hitler realized is that you don’t have to have a common citizenship.”
Mahmood Mamdani also said that Nazi Germany’s racist and antisemitic <a href="https://www.nationalww2museum.org/war/articles/nuremberg-laws" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nuremberg Laws</a> were “patterned after American laws.”
Moreover, “The Nazi political project was shared by the Allies, and that political project was to turn Germany into a ‘pure’ nation.”
“When the Allies defeated the Nazis and went into Eastern Europe, they began to create ‘pure’ nations. To ethnically cleanse Eastern Europe of Germans — move them back into Germany. One crime doesn’t wipe out another.”
Mahmood Mamdani’s book reveals a blatantly Marxist philosophy: “There are two kinds of identities, there is the identity of the oppressor and the identity of the oppressed,” he said.
He argues that “The nation state is what prevents us from living together.” This is because “The majority precedes democracy.” The tension between citizen and subject, or majority and minority, is an inherent consequence of colonialism:
“I argue that nationalism and colonialism are not two different things. We normally think of two kinds of nationalism, good nationalism and bad nationalism. Good nationalism brought us together and bad nationalism targeted other minorities. The important thing to realize is that these two things happen at the same time, they are two sides of the same coin,” he stated.
In order to eliminate oppression, Mamdani argues that we need to <a href="https://novaramedia.com/2025/07/03/if-you-like-zohran-mamdani-youre-going-to-love-his-dad/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dismantle</a> “colonialist architecture,” stating that “the tribes must take charge and the tribes must be sovereign.”
In an interview with the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/26/nyregion/zohran-mamdani-parents-mira-nair.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Times</a>, the elder Mamdani stressed that Zohran is “his own person.”
“Now, of course what we do as his parents is part of the environment in which he grew up, and he couldn’t help but engage with it. That doesn’t mean anything is reflected back on us.”
Zohran’s mother, the director Amrit Nair, disagreed: “Of course the world we live in, and what we write and film and think about, is the world that Zohran has very much absorbed.”
Zohran Mamdani self-identifies as a democratic socialist and has espoused numerous radical socialist policies, including <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/02/realestate/mamdani-rent-freeze-real-estate.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">freezing the rent</a> on a million apartments, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/28/nyregion/mamdani-policies-economy-housing-buses-childcare.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">raising the minimum wage</a> to 30$ by 2030, making child care and the bus system free, replacing police with teams of <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1a7ejjSZWWIAcxfcWnkYaqvnjihTb0LAOQkj8g10-npg/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.2gazcsgmxkub" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mental health professionals</a>, and establishing city-run grocery stores.

Earlier this month, we celebrated the 80th anniversary of V-E Day, “Victory in Europe,” which marked the end of the European Theater’s part in the Second World War. It is a date certainly worth commemorating as it closed one of the darkest chapters in European history, which was the rise and fall of Hitler’s Third Reich.
For the countries in what today we call Western Europe that languished for years under the jackboot of Nazi oppression — France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Denmark, Norway, Greece — the Allied victory truly represented liberation.

But there was another side to V-E Day that seems to get glossed over. And that is the less happy fate of the Eastern European nations who were not liberated by the Anglo-Americans rolling in from the west, but rather the Red Army coming in from the east. And for those nations — Poland, Hungary, then-Czechoslovakia, the Baltic states — V-E Day merely meant trading one brutal oppressor for another. Indeed, as the Allies were closing in from both sides, the dark joke in Germany was “Optimists are learning English, pessimists are learning Russian.”
We have been conditioned for over 80 years to viscerally recoil at the very mention of the Führer’s name. Just say “Hitler” and the mind conjures up images of the Holocaust and mass murder of millions of innocents carried out by robotic, goose-stepping stormtroopers wearing their signature coal scuttle helmets.
Yet, when we utter the name “Stalin,” no such dark imagery materializes in the collective mind. And yet, in terms of pure numbers, it can be argued that the Soviet “Man of Steel” had more blood on his hands than even Hitler. Why the indifferent reaction?
It could perhaps be attributed to a curious media/academic tendency of apologetics towards communism. As polls consistently show, both of these institutions lean very much to the left. And Stalinism is the ultimate expression of their collective leftist ideology come to fruition in all its destructive inevitability. During the 1930s, for example, dispatches from Moscow-based New York Times correspondent Walter Duranty were shamefully obsequious towards Stalin, offering up for his readers images of a prosperous, happy communist USSR workers’ paradise.
No matter that the Soviet dictator was coldly stripping Ukraine of food and inducing a famine in 1932-1933 (called the “Holodomor”) during which anywhere from 3.5 to 5 million Ukrainians died of starvation — atrocities Duranty labeled as a “big scare” and “exaggeration.”
Then there was Stalin’s 1929-1933 genocide against the Kulaks (wealthy peasants who resisted his policies) to facilitate the expropriation of farmland. In one directive, the Soviet leader declared, “We must smash the Kulaks, liquidate them as a class.” Millions died.
And what of the estimated 700,000 to 6 million who died in Stalin’s Gulag, the far-flung network of concentration camps where he sent his enemies, whom the hyper-paranoid dictator saw all around him. (Figures vary widely; the latter number comes from dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, who was imprisoned for eight years.)
Starting in 1936, Stalin wiped out his political and military adversaries in a series of show trials called “The Great Purge.” Stalin’s biographer Oleg V. Khlevniuk estimates that 1.6 million were arrested, with 700,000 shot; no one knows how many died of torture.

During the Second World War on the Eastern Front, Stalin was so profligate with the lives of his people that by the time the red banner of the USSR was flying over the Reichstag in the conquered Berlin, some 27 million Soviets lay dead. Many as a result of combat and German atrocities, of course, but also due to Stalin’s unimaginative strategies that callously offered up both his soldiers and civilians before the guns of the Wehrmacht as fodder.
Whereas Hitler’s policies were driven by twisted racial hatred, delusions of grandeur, a sense of grievance on behalf of a nation he felt was ill-treated at Versailles, and, by the end, drug-addled bona fide madness, Stalin in some ways is even more disturbing as there was a cold, calculating, and ruthless nature to his machinations.
Stalin will also go down as one of the most treacherous characters in history. It should be remembered that until Hitler turned on him and attacked Russia in June 1941, Stalin and the German dictator were allies. Hitler only felt secure enough to invade Poland and trigger the Second World War because Berlin and Moscow had just entered into a non-aggression pact the month before. In fact, people often forget that in September 1939, Poland was not just invaded by the Wehrmacht but also by the Red Army. After which, Stalin’s NKVD promptly rounded up 22,000 members of Poland’s military and intelligentsia, marched them to the Katyn Forest, and shot them all dead.

Says historian Victor Davis Hanson: “Of the six major belligerents of World War II, on the Axis side, Italy, Japan, and Germany, and the United States, Russia, and Britain, Stalin made a deal with every one of them at one time or another, and he honored the ones with the Axis better than he did us.”
But, unlike Hitler, Stalin’s image during the war was softened by the Roosevelt administration and pliant media due to the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. FDR, especially, was hopelessly naïve about the duplicitous nature of the man whose military he was now supplying through Lend-Lease. As far as he saw it, the Russians were now our allies after all. And, frankly, we needed the Red Army to kill as many Germans as possible before we invaded France. The mass murderer of Moscow was thus re-christened “Uncle Joe” Stalin. And as it was his Red Army more than any other that destroyed the Wehrmacht, what he did to his own people and those in Eastern Europe were swept under the rug until the Cold War commenced in the late 1940s. After all, as the saying goes, “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.”

80 years after the war in Europe ended, modern Germany is still horrified by, and ashamed of, their Nazi past. But to this day, even in a post-Cold War Russia in which information regarding the horrific crimes carried out by the Bolsheviks is now widely accessible, Stalin is revered by the Russian people. A 2021 poll by the Levada Center found that 70% of Russians held a mostly or very favorable view of Stalin.
And that same lack of revulsion over Stalin’s decades-long reign of terror carries over into the West today as a misguided affinity for Marxism slithers its insidious way through the halls of so-called higher education. A poll by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation found that millennials, particularly younger ones, displayed a dreadful ignorance of communism and even support for it. Almost half of Americans between the ages of 16 and 20 “said they would vote for a socialist, while 21% would go so far as to back a Communist.” Even more shocking was that a “third of millennials say they believe more people were killed under George W. Bush than Joseph Stalin.” This is criminal negligence on the part of academia — and dangerous.
I have a shirt that reads “Communism killed 100 million people and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.” Though gallows humor, the message is also a searing indictment of a left-leaning academic and media establishment that are utterly dismissive of the crimes perpetrated by the founding fathers of their own defunct and cruel ideologies. Larry David can’t stand the fact that Bill Maher didn’t hate Donald Trump after they had dinner together.
The 77-year-old “Curb Your Enthusiasm” creator wrote an opinion piece attacking Maher for being open-minded, repeating the tired trope throughout the piece that Trump is Hitler.
The satirical <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/21/opinion/larry-david-hitler-dinner.html">essay</a> based on Maher’s remarks, titled “My Dinner With Adolf,” was published by The New York Times on Monday. 
“I had been a vocal critic of his on the radio from the beginning, pretty much predicting everything he was going to do on the road to dictatorship,” David wrote, pretending to tell the story from Maher’s perspective. “But eventually I concluded that hate gets us nowhere. I knew I couldn’t change his views, but we need to talk to the other side.”
David went on, “I joked that I was surprised to see him in a tan suit because if he wore that out, it would be perceived as un-Führer-like. That amused him to no end, and I realized I’d never seen him laugh before. Suddenly he seemed so human. Here I was, prepared to meet Hitler, the one I’d seen and heard — the public Hitler. But this private Hitler was a completely different animal. And oddly enough, this one seemed more authentic, like this was the real Hitler. The whole thing had my head spinning.”
“‘I must say, mein Führer, I’m so thankful I came. Although we disagree on many issues, it doesn’t mean that we have to hate each other.’ And with that, I gave him a Nazi salute and walked out into the night,” David’s essay says.
Maher, who has been openly critical of Trump, had a private dinner with the president earlier this month. He later admitted to enjoying himself and feeling better about the president on his <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxlopbcfXpQ">show</a>, &#8220;Real Time with Bill Maher.&#8221;
“And I know as I say that, millions of liberal sphincters just tightened. ‘Oh, my God, Bill, you gonna say something nice about him?’ What I’m gonna do is report exactly what happened. You decide what you think about it, and if that’s not enough pure Trump hate for you, I don’t give a f***,” Maher said of the meeting. 
“I don’t remember exactly what we were talking about, but it must have been something with the 2020 election because I know he used the word ‘lost,’ and I distinctly remember saying, ‘Wow, I never thought I’d hear you say that,’” Maher added. “He didn’t get mad. He’s much more self-aware than he lets on in public.”
“Everything I’ve ever not liked about him was — I swear to God — absent, at least on this night with this guy,” the “Real Time” host said. “He mostly steered the conversation to, ‘What do you think about this?’ I know: your mind is blown. So is mine.”
“A crazy person doesn’t live in the White House,” he added. “A person who plays a crazy person on TV a lot lives there, which I know is f***ed up. It’s just not as f***ed up as I thought it was.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended Elon Musk on Thursday after far-Left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and others smeared him as a Nazi for a gesture that he made during President Donald Trump&#8217;s inaugural celebrations earlier this week.
Musk made the gesture at the end of his remarks inside Capitol One Arena when he told the crowd, “Thank you. My heart goes out to you.”

Ocasio-Cortez made the accusation during remarks she made during an Instagram livestream.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t care what Elon Musk is doing behind a presidential seal,&#8221; she said. &#8220;In this country, we hate Nazis.&#8221;
&#8220;I like, you&#8217;re gonna do a Sieg Heil, you&#8217;re going to do a Heil Hitler &#8230; from behind the presidential seal of the United States of America?&#8221; she continued. &#8220;It&#8217;s on! It&#8217;s on!&#8221;

Netanyahu responded to accusations by saying that Musk was &#8220;being falsely smeared.&#8221;

&#8220;He has since repeatedly and forcefully supported Israel’s right to defend itself against genocidal terrorists and regimes who seek to annihilate the one and only Jewish state,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;I thank him for this.&#8221;
Even the left-wing Anti-Defamation League (ADL) defended Musk over the accusations.
&#8220;It seems that @elonmusk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on edge,&#8221; they said. &#8220;In this moment, all sides should give one another a bit of grace, perhaps even the benefit of the doubt, and take a breath. This is a new beginning. Let’s hope for healing and work toward unity in the months and years ahead.&#8221;
AOC fumed at the ADL&#8217;s statement: &#8220;Just to be clear, you are defending a Heil Hitler salute that was performed and repeated for emphasis and clarity.&#8221;
&#8220;People can officially stop listening to you as any sort of reputable source of information now,&#8221; she said. &#8220;You work for them. Thank you for making that crystal clear to all.&#8221;

Sunny Hostin, a far-left co-host of ABC&#8217;s &#8220;The View,&#8221; slammed the co-hosts of MSNBC&#8217;s &#8220;Morning Joe&#8221; for going to Mar-a-Lago to try to curry favor with President-elect Donald Trump.
&#8220;Morning Joe&#8221; co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski said during Monday morning’s show that they met with Trump over the weekend “to restart communications.”
It was the first time that they had spoken to him in seven years after they have repeatedly attacked him, including comparing him to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.
The show has been so rabidly hostile to Trump that MSNBC pulled it off the air the day after Trump was shot because the network was reportedly worried about what might be said on air.
&#8220;The bottom line is that America needs a free press that is willing to speak truth to power right now more than ever,&#8221; Hostin claimed. &#8220;And I think that we have to be very clear eyed when we think about the president-elect and cover the president-elect.&#8221;
&#8220;And I don&#8217;t think you need to sit down for 90 minutes at Mar-a-Lago and kiss his ring to be able to speak truth and to be able to cover a story,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;So maybe they&#8217;re not journalists in the true sense.&#8221;
Hostin claimed Trump was &#8220;the guy who ushered in the era of fake news.&#8221;
&#8220;He is the guy who ushered in alternative facts,&#8221; she claimed. &#8220;He is the guy who attacked three black female journalists. He&#8217;s the guy that revoked Jim Acosta&#8217;s press credentials for asking him a question. And so I think that this president-elect, I hate to say it would like nothing more than to have only Fox News cover him. Would like nothing more than a state-sponsored media.&#8221;
She concluded by claiming that Trump could not &#8220;be trusted in the way that other presidents can be trusted.&#8221;
