Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called again on the leaders of Western nations to provide the weapons his country needs to defend itself against Russia’s military.

Zelensky shared the remarks during his nightly nationally televised broadcast on Tuesday in Ukraine. He claimed that it’s unfair that he must keep asking for weapons other nations have had in storage for years.

“That is why I emphasize the simple truth in literally every contact with the leaders of the democratic world, in all negotiations, in all interviews – it is unfair that Ukraine is still forced to ask for what its partners have been storing somewhere for years,” Zelensky said.

“If they have the weapons that Ukraine needs here, needs now, if they have the ammunition that we need here and now, it is their moral duty, first of all, to help protect freedom. Help save the lives of thousands of Ukrainians,” he added.

The Ukrainian president also said that receiving more weapons soon will save the lives of thousands of people.

“If we had received what we are getting now in the first week of the war, the benefit for Ukraine and for freedom in Europe would be greater, I am sure. And if we get what some partners plan to hand over to Ukraine in the coming weeks right now, it will save the lives of thousands of people,” Zelensky stated.

The U.S. has already given $2.6 billion to Ukraine in military assistance since Russia’s invasion began in late February. The Biden administration is also considering an additional $800 million to meet Zelensky’s requests.

Ukraine’s military has continued to mount an impressive resistance movement despite a much smaller number of military members that Russia.

“Russia has about 900,000 soldiers in active military service across its forces compared to Ukraine’s 196,600, though Russia’s army is only estimated to be about twice the size of Ukraine’s with the Russian army consisting of 280,000 soldiers compared with Ukraine’s 125,600,” Fox News reported.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said during a Tuesday daily briefing that President Joe Biden held a call with leaders of the P+11 nations on Tuesday morning regarding ongoing efforts in Ukraine.

“The leaders affirmed their solidarity with the Ukrainian people and condemned the humanitarian suffering caused by Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion,” according to Psaki.

Zelensky’s update also comes as two Republican senators called on Secretary of State Antony Blinken to reopen the U.S. Embassy in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.

Senators Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Steve Daines (R-MT) shared the request in a letter on Tuesday that was obtained by Politico. They reasoned that Ukraine appears to have staved off Russia’s attempt to seize the capital.

“With Ukraine’s successful defense of Kyiv and Russia’s subsequent withdrawal of forces from the areas surrounding the capital, we encourage you to fully open the United States embassy without delay,” the senators wrote.
