A new study published in the medical journal Issues in Law and Medicine states that up to 68% of women who changed their mind after beginning the process of a chemical abortion and started taking supplemental progesterone gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby.
The study examined 754 women who had taken mifepristone, a progesterone receptor antagonist, in order to terminate their pregnancies, but had not yet taken the second drug in the protocol, misoprostol. They took supplemental progesterone to save their babies after that.
The authors of the study reported, “Intramuscular progesterone and high dose oral progesterone were the most effective with reversal rates of 64% (P < 0.001) and 68% (P < 0.001), respectively.”
The study noted that in 2014, 31% of non-hospital induced abortions were medical induced abortions. It also explained, “This study is limited in that it is not a randomized placebo-controlled trial. However, a placebo-controlled trial in the population of women who regret their abortion and want to save the pregnancy would be unethical.”
As Jay Hobbs of pregnancyhelpnews.com points out, “The new study is the first publically available documentation since 2012, when Delgado and his colleague Mary Davenport published an article following seven women’s progress in Annals of Pharmacotherapy. With that limited sample size, Delgado and Davenport showed a 66 percent success rate when the protocol was applied within 72 hours of a woman taking mifepristone—the first of two pills in the abortion pill regimen.”
