Fielding questions at press conference in Dubai on Monday to promote to his new movie Suicide Squad, actor Will Smith blasted Republican nominee Donald Trump as “embarrassing” to America, but stated that his rise was an overall good since now we can “cleanse” the Unites States of those who support him.
“As painful as it is to hear Donald Trump talk and as embarrassing as it is as an American to hear him talk, I think it’s good,” Smith told the press. “We get to hear it. We get to know who people really are and now we get to cleanse it out of our country.”
Of course, using the word “cleanse” has historically horrific connotations, and interestingly enough, Smith happens to be on the same side of the political aisle as those who literally call Trump Adolf Hitler.
Go figure.
Smith also felt it necessary to blast America for supposedly rampant “Islamophobia.” The actor high on his own self-inflated morality suggested that he can be an example of tolerance for us Islamophobes back home, since, ya know, everyone there is being really nice to a rich Hollywood actor. Or something.
“In terms of Islamophobia in America, for me, it’s why it’s important to show up. It’s like I’m in Dubai and I’m having fun and I’m tweeting and I’m showing pictures and I’m like, ‘Hey, it doesn’t look like they hate me, does it?’ You know?” said the actor.
Dubai is one of the more Western-friendly locations in the Middle East, but it’s not exactly a beacon of human rights. Maybe Smith could have lectured about the human rights violations concerning gays and women instead of scolding America?
But, hey, what do I know? I’m just a hateful Westerner.
