A swarm of giant cockroaches could one day crawl through earthquake rubble, locate trapped victims, and deliver lifesaving medicine before human rescuers can reach them.
Researchers at the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales have developed “paraborgs” — cyborg cockroaches equipped with cameras and miniature drug-injection systems designed for search-and-rescue missions.
The technology is as unsettling as it sounds. But it could also solve a major problem for emergency responders: reaching people trapped in spaces too narrow, unstable, or dangerous for humans and conventional rescue robots.
The researchers used giant burrowing cockroaches native to northern Queensland, which can grow to roughly 3.3 inches long and weigh up to 40 grams. Tiny implanted electrodes allow human operators to remotely steer the insects, while removable backpacks can carry cameras or an auto-injection mechanism.
Fortunately, the cockroaches are not making medical decisions themselves. Human operators control their movements and trigger the injection once the insect is positioned near its target.
In laboratory testing, the insects successfully navigated to designated checkpoints in all 25 trials. The complete mission — navigating to a target, positioning themselves, and delivering medication — succeeded in 72% of trials. When the injection was attempted within roughly six inches of the target, the success rate rose to about 95%.
Researchers tested the system using silicone targets and pig skin, and have not conducted human trials. The technology could eventually allow rescue teams to deliver basic emergency treatment to people trapped beneath collapsed buildings or inside caves, potentially buying critical time before victims can be extracted.
“A lot of people might not like the sight of a giant cockroach scurrying towards them,” Ph.D. candidate Hai Nhan Le said. “But if you’re trapped in rubble or stuck in a cave and need help, it could make a real difference between life and death.”
The researchers envision eventually deploying swarms of specialized cyborg insects, with some carrying cameras and environmental sensors while others deliver medical supplies. The team estimates real-world deployment could still be five to 10 years away, pending further testing and regulatory approval.
So yes, the future of emergency medicine may involve a giant cockroach crawling toward you with a syringe strapped to its back. And if you’re trapped under 20 feet of rubble, that might be exactly what you want to see.
