On Thursday, four days before Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro’s scheduled speech at the University of Florida, leftists roamed the campus quad attempting to remove posters and chalk messages advertising the event. Activists from the university’s Young Americans for Freedom were alerted; one, Eduardo Neret, confronted a vandal just as he tore down a poster.
That prompted Neret to follow the vandal, questioning him while the vandal tried to hide his face. Neret queried:
Hey, man, why did you rip that Ben Shapiro poster down? Why’d you rip that poster down? Wait, wait; you want to rip down a poster and then you’re too afraid to say why you ripped it down? C’mon, man. Why’d you rip it down? Why’d you rip down the Ben Shapiro poster? You don’t believe in free speech? You know, that’s against property rights. When you post something like that at the University it actually belongs to the University of Florida. C’mon, show your face. Don’t be a coward. C’mon, man. You ripped down the poster and then you don’t want to show your face?
The vandals tried to erase the chalk messages by dumping water on them; when that failed, they wrote their own messages, including “BLACK LIVES MATTER,” “TRANS LIVES MATTER,” as well as calling Shapiro “the Racist” and a “HATE-MONGER.”
One especially literate leftist left this message: “or you could do LITERALLY anything else and use your timely productivly [sic].”
In addition, YAF activists discovered that some leftists groups, such as Students for Democratic Socialism, Indivisible Gainesville, and College Democrats, tried to hoard tickets so conservatives could not attend.
