Nearly one year after nearly losing his life in a politically motivated mass shooting, Rep. Steve Scalise returned to the pitchers mound at the GOP baseball team’s practice field.
It was an emotional moment for both Scalise and the team.

On June 14 last year, just one day before the annual Congressional baseball game, an Illinois man armed with a gun and a “hit list” of Republican Congressmen opened fire on the Republicans’ morning practice, wounding several people including Rep. Scalise.
There were no deaths (aside from the shooter who was killed by law enforcement on the scene), but Rep. Scalise was, reportedly, grievously injured. A bullet entered his leg but never exited, coming within centimeters of puncturing his internal organs. He spent several weeks in the hospital and several months at an inpatient rehabilitation center and is technically still in recovery. In his brief appearance on the pitchers mound Wednesday, Scalise used crutches to walk and a cane to assist him in standing upright.
Although, from an outsider’s perspective, the shooter’s motive seems clear, the FBI maintains that there is no explanation for the incident.
