A bar owner in Los Angeles, California, is fighting back against heavy-handed lockdown measures that have forced her to shut down while other industries operate under government exemptions.

Angela Marsden, owner of Pineapple Hill Saloon and Grill in Sherman Oaks, put out a video the went viral on Friday showing an outdoor patio space she is not allowed to use under current health mandates sitting next to a large tented space for a movie production company to feed its workers.

“So this is my place, the Pineapple Hill Grill and Saloon. If you go to my page you can see all the work I did for outdoor dining for tables being seven feet apart, and I come in today because I am organizing a protest and I came in to get stuff for that. And I walk into my parking lot and, obviously, [Los Angeles] Mayor Garcetti has approved this,” Marsden says, pointing to the large, outdoor dining area set up by movie company just feet away from her own outdoor dining area that has been outlawed under the current health orders.

Marsden spent roughly $80,000 renovating her business and setting up an outdoor area to seat people for in-person dining, she told local CBS affiliate KCAL 9. Under the current health codes, restaurants may only provide take-out only. Marsden has been forced to close down her business completely because she cannot cover her margins on take-out alone.

“[Garcetti] has approved this being set up for … a movie company. I’m losing everything. Everything I own is being taken away from me, and they set up a movie company right next to my outdoor patio,” Marsden says. “And people wonder why I’m protesting and why I have had enough. They have not given us money and they have shut us down. We cannot survive. My staff cannot survive.”

“Look at this,” she continues, pointing to her patio. “Tell me that this is dangerous, but right next to me is a slap in my face, that’s safe. This is safe? Fifty feet away?”

Garcetti announced a new health order on Wednesday, telling residents to stay home. “It’s time to cancel everything,” the mayor said. The order contains a number of exemptions for businesses such as cannabis dispensaries, liquor stores, film and television production, and bicycle repair shops.

“This is dangerous. Mayor Garcetti and [California Gov. Gavin Newsom are] responsible for every single person that doesn’t have unemployment, that does not have a job, and all the businesses that are going under, and we need your help. We need somebody to do something about this!” Marsden concludes.

Marsden has joined with several other friends in the restaurant industry to hold a protest on Saturday. She has also set up an online fundraiser for people to donate to and help her struggling business stay afloat through the pandemic. By Saturday morning, it had raised more than $40,000, over 4-times its goal.

“We are a small business in Sherman Oaks California and we need your help! The governor and mayor are trying to ruin everything we’ve worked so hard for! Our restaurants and bars are not the reason why the Covid numbers are high! Please help us!” the fundraiser’s description says.
