Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) was hospitalized on Thursday, but that did not stop his attorney from shooting down Democrat House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s call for Conyers to resign after being accused by multiple women of sexual harassment.
Conyers’ attorney, Arnold Reed, slammed Pelosi at a press conference in Detroit, calling her a hypocrite and saying the decision is not up to her.
“First of all, it is not up to Nancy Pelosi. Nancy Pelosi did not elect the congressman and she sure as hell won’t be the one to tell the congressman to leave,” Reed said. “That decision will be completely up to the congressman. He has not thought about that. He is thinking about his health. He is thinking about getting well.”
Reed also called out Pelosi’s hypocrisy in calling for Conyers’ resignation but not for Sen. Al Franken’s (D-MN) resignation.
“There are, to my count, five of these allegations against Al Franken,” Reed continued. “There are four, three or four against the congressman.”
Although Reed did not specifically bring up the issue of race, he appeared to suggest that race could be the reason that Pelosi is using a double-standard as he said she needs to explain the difference between the two men. He asserted, “At the end of the day, I would suspect that Nancy Pelosi is going to have to explain what is the discernible difference between Al Franken and John Conyers. That is a question that she is going to have to answer.”
