Kelley Mack, an actress best known for her role on the popular zombie apocalypse series “The Walking Dead,” has died at the age of 33 from a rare form of cancer.
“Such a bright, fervent light has transitioned to the beyond, where we all eventually must go,” her sister Kathryn shared via Mack’s Instagram account on Tuesday.
“Kelley passed peacefully on Saturday evening with her loving mother Kristen and steadfast aunt Karen present. Kelley has already come to many of her loved ones in the form of various butterflies,” the post said. “She will be missed by so many to depths that words cannot express.”
Mack’s sister went on, “She would want you all to know how much she loves you. And as her sister, I want you all to know how brave that tough SOB was, especially when she decided to make the leap to be reunited with God. I’m so f***ing proud of her.”
In a previous Instagram post last year, Mack explained that she experienced “persistent lower back pain” and thought she had slipped a disc. Weeks later, she had “neuropathic itching in my right quad” followed by “shooting pains” in her legs and back that caused her to begin sleeping in a recliner because lying down “was too painful.”
At the time, she said she was receiving radiation treatment.
“I am very grateful to have such a supportive and loving family and boyfriend, who have been with me every second of this process. It has been a very emotional and challenging time, truly testing my mental fortitude, faith, and physical strength,” Mack wrote at the time. “This experience has brought me closer to God, and I am leaning on him and trust his plan for me.”
She ended the post with a Bible quote. “The light shines in the darkness; and the darkness has not overcome it. -John 1:5”
Mack appeared in season 9 of “The Walking Dead” from 2018 to 2019 as Addy. According to her IMDb profile, she was also in “Chicago Med” and an episode of “9-1-1,” in addition to the films “Mr. Manhattan” and “Delicate Arch.”
“Kelley was known for her warmth, creativity, and unwavering support for those around her. She cherished time with her family and friends, finding joy in collaboration and storytelling. Her infectious enthusiasm and dedication to her work inspired countless others in the industry and beyond,” her obituary said in part.
