The University of Iowa’s College Republicans were temporarily suspended for chalking outside on campus without face masks on.
On the evening of May 4, the College Republicans congregated outside to “chalk” slogans on the university’s sidewalks. The student organization — following university protocols — wrote slogans such as “Unborn Lives Matter,” “Jesus Loves You,” and “Blue Lives Matter,” among others.
The next morning, the university’s Office of Student Accountability emailed College Republican President Makenzie Jones informing her that the club had been placed on an “interim suspension” following reports that club members were not masked outside.
“The Office of Student Accountability is in the process of investigating allegations that your organization violated University Student Organization regulations,” the email reads. “It has been reported that the College Republicans … hosted an event on the Pentacrest at which attendees and organization members did not follow University of Iowa policies related to the COVID-19 pandemic … Due to the gravity of the report, effective immediately, I am issuing an interim suspension of all operations and activities of College Republicans pending the outcome of the investigation into the aforementioned incident.”
Jones was informed that she must schedule a meeting with Angela Ibrahim-Olin, the school’s assistant dean and director of student accountability, before May 10. According to communication records obtained by The Daily Wire, on May 5, Ibrahim-Olin and Jones spoke on the phone, and the club’s interim suspension was rescinded shortly after.
In the meantime, liberal student activists wasted no time desecrating the College Republican’s chalking. Micah Broekemeier, a member of College Republicans, told The Daily Wire that he saw students scuffing out the American flag and throwing water on the chalk.
A member of the university’s student government also encouraged friends to join her in removing the chalk. The student government member claims to have called on maintenance to remove the chalk, though she was denied.
“Hey UIowa friends! I called maintenance this [morning] about washing off the chalk on the Pentacrest and they legally can’t regardless of the messaging so if anyone would like to join me in personally washing it off [direct message] me.”
In a separate Instagram story, the student government member tagged four friends, one of whom The Daily Wire confirmed is also a member of the student government.
Following the resurgence of Black Lives Matter, student activists vandalized school property with spray paint and profane slogans such as “Black Lives Matter,” “F**k the police,” “Black power,” and “ACAB,” which stands for “All Cops Are Bastards.”
According to the university, students are breaking policy if they message with any product that is not water-soluble or chalk on a surface other than the sidewalk. Student activists received no pushback from the university following the breach of policy in the name of Black Lives Matter.
