President Donald Trump praised Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) for her “bravery” after the congresswoman pulled her support from fellow Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and endorsed Republican Mike Rogers in the race for the open Senate seat in Michigan.

“Wow, this is BIG!” Trump wrote Sunday afternoon. “Congresswoman Haley Stevens, a Highly Respected Democrat, who narrowly lost in the Primary to Abdul Mohamed El-Sayed, and who has been breathlessly wined and dined by the Dumocrats to help in their Michigan Campaign for the United States Senate against Mike Rogers, has just ENDORSED Mike Rogers for Senate!”

“Her following is huge, and the level of respect from the People of Michigan, especially our African American and Jewish populations, is virtually unparalleled,” Trump added. “Haley said what few people are willing to say. She showed great and almost unprecedented loyalty to the Great People of Michigan with what she did. It’s a thing called bravery, and few people have it like just displayed by Congresswoman Haley Stevens!”

Stevens’ shock endorsement comes just two days before voters decide who will be the next U.S. senator from Michigan, a state that will play a vital role in determining which party controls the upper chamber for the second half of Trump’s term. Stevens narrowly lost the Democrat primary against El-Sayed in August and initially endorsed her Democrat challenger in the general election before pulling that endorsement and backing Rogers on Sunday.

“Hey Michigan, as you may have seen, our Democratic nominee for U.S., Senate, Abdul, said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away,” Stevens began. “And he’s right. And that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today. I don’t belong in Abdul’s campaign. I do not stand with Hasan Piker.”

The Democrat congresswoman flipped her endorsement to Rogers after expressing disgust with El-Sayed’s ties to America-hating communist streamer Hasan Piker. She also blasted El-Sayed after he ran a campaign ad featuring commentator Tucker Carlson.

Democrats across the country expressed outrage after Stevens flipped her endorsement.

“This is a despicable betrayal from Rep. Stevens,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said. “Senate Democrats are united in our support for Abdul El-Sayed, because we know he will fight for the economic interests of working families in Michigan, unlike Mike Rogers, who is a tool of Donald Trump and billionaire donors.”

The Michigan Democrat Party said that Stevens’ decision seeks to “divide our party and undermine our momentum.” Members of Stevens’ staff also resigned en masse after she backed Rogers, with her former Chief of Staff Justin German saying her staff was “shocked and heartbroken.”

On Sunday afternoon, El-Sayed begged reporters to ask about “issues the people in my state are facing” and not about Stevens’ endorsement of Rogers.

“If you want to ask me questions about some intrigue and about two folks who aren’t here right now,” he said, speaking of Stevens and Rogers. “I’m gonna be less interested in answering them. Just putting it out there.”
