President Donald Trump mocked Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) Thursday for answering “Not to my knowledge” when asked whether she was related to her ex-husband, the man critics have long claimed is her brother.
“Well, if you ask me that same question about, let’s say my sister, I would say no,” Trump said. “She said, ‘Not to my knowledge.’ That tells you a lot right there.”
Trump added that he had “never been a big fan” of Omar and said he would wait to see how the investigation into her immigration and marriage history unfolded.
“Let’s see how it all works out,” Trump said. “But that statement tells you a lot.”
Omar gave the response during an interview Wednesday with MS NOW host Chris Hayes, who asked whether she was related to her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, or whether there was “some weird kernel of truth” to the brother claim.

“Not to my knowledge,” Omar replied.
Omar has repeatedly denied the allegations that she married her biological brother. In Wednesday’s interview, she called the claim “insane” and said it started on a Somali blog before “right-wing conspiracy theorists in Minneapolis got a hold of it.”
The congresswoman married Elmi in 2009, separated from him in 2011, and divorced him in 2017.
A court filing released Wednesday also lists Omar as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” Prosecutors do not explain the use of that name.
Federal investigators are reportedly examining her immigration and marriage history. Federal agents executed a search warrant at Omar’s Washington, D.C., home and seized electronic devices and documents, according to prior reporting. Investigators also reportedly obtained DNA evidence as part of the inquiry.
Omar has denied wrongdoing and accused the Trump administration of using the investigation to intimidate her and score political points with the president’s supporters. She also said she planned to leave her Washington residence because she feared for her family’s safety amid threats.
