President Donald Trump fired State Department inspector general Steve Linick on Friday night, causing a massive reaction from those on the political Left.
“Trump informed Congress of his intent to oust Linick, a Justice Department veteran appointed to the role in 2013 by then President Barack Obama, in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi,” Politico reported. “The president said he ‘no longer’ had the ‘fullest confidence’ in Linick and promised to send the Senate a nominee ‘who has my confidence and who meets the appropriate qualifications.'”
The move sparked outrage on Twitter by hardcore left-wing critics who suggested without evidence that this was somehow proof that the Trump administration was “about obstruction and the elevation of crime and corruption to the central role of government.”
Daily Caller News Foundation reported:
Two sources familiar with Linick’s ouster told the DCNF that while they were not certain of the precise reason that the watchdog was fired, he was under investigation last year by the Department of Defense’s inspector general for mishandling sensitive material.
The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
Linick attempted to play a role in the impeachment of President Donald Trump last year by approaching Congress with information that he appeared to think was relevant—it was not.
Roll Call reported that lawmakers said that Linick delivered a dossier to them of unknown origins that was essentially filled with conspiracy theories.
Even Democrats, who were chomping at the bit to impeach and remove the president, said that Linick was unhelpful.
“It raises more questions than it answers. The inspector general had no idea where it came from,” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said. “There’s nothing in here that I think is directly relevant to the president’s impeachable conduct.”
Political strategist Arthur Schwartz responded to the news by writing on Twitter, “Good riddance. This guy was the Peter Strzok of the State Department.”
Many of those who feigned outrage over the move tried to claim that this was Trump’s way of avoiding accountability, yet they completely ignored the fact that the administration reportedly already has someone lined up to take the job.
A State Department spokesperson said that Amb. Stephen Akard, a former career Foreign Service officer, “will now lead the Office of the Inspector General at the State Department” in an acting capacity.
Akard had in 2017 been nominated to serve as the director general of the Foreign Service, a high-ranking human resources role. …
Before joining the Trump administration, Akard was chief of staff for the Indiana Economic Development Corporation under then-governor Pence.
Foreign Policy noted that Akard “served eight years in the foreign service over a decade ago, from 1997 to 2005 — including tours in Belgium and India and as a staff aide to then-Secretary of State Colin Powell.”
