President Donald Trump on Saturday morning announced that the United States has mediated a “full and immediate ceasefire” between India and Pakistan, two nuclear-armed rivals.

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE,” Trump posted to Truth Social. “Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio provided more details on the matter via X, writing that he and Vice President JD Vance were able to get both sides to agree to a ceasefire and to “start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site.”

“Over the past 48 hours, [Vice President] Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik,” Rubio said. “I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site.”

“We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace,” the secretary of state added.

The recent conflict started over a terror attack in the Indian regions of Jammu & Kashmir on April 22 that left 26 civilians dead. According to India, a few of the terrorists, who are accused of specifically targeting Hindus, were from Pakistan. Pakistan denies involvement in the terror attack.

Tensions between the longtime rivals further escalated with cross-border small arms fire, the suspension of a river water-sharing treaty, the canceling of visas on both sides, and other measures, The Daily Wire reported.

The Indian military then said it struck nine sites where “terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed,” reported BBC. Pakistan denied the claim, alleging that Indian strikes hit civilian areas and killed numerous children, according to its military.
