A top Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives voted in favor of impeaching President Donald Trump on Wednesday — a vote that was disastrous for Democrats — only to turn around and praise Trump for policy decisions after the vote.
Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY), the top Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee, commended Trump for his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the Washington Examiner reported.
“This decision is long overdue and helps correct a decades-long indignity,” Engel said. “I support the decision to recognize Jerusalem as the eternal capital of Israel and to move the U.S. embassy there.”
Engel’s comments came after he voted with 57 other Democrats on Wednesday to move forward with impeaching Trump — a disastrous vote that was defeated 364-58.
Despite his vote, he continued praising Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital city.
“It recognizes where Israel’s government — the parliament and the prime minister — is based, as well as the ancient and unbreakable connection between the Jewish people and Jerusalem,” Engel said. “I look forward to a plan to ensure the safety and security of our embassy personnel.”
