Sen. Tommy Tuberville announced on Tuesday that he will run to be the next governor of Alabama.
Tuberville announced his gubernatorial bid from Byron’s Smokehouse in Auburn, Alabama, the same spot he announced his bid for U.S. Senate, his first run for elected office, in 2019. The former longtime college football coach enters the race as the favorite after other notable Republicans passed on entering the race.
“President Trump was a guy that really was behind me in doing the Senate race. He&#8217;s been behind me ever since. And, today, I will announce that I will be the future governor of the great state of Alabama,” Tuberville said during an appearance on Fox News’ “The Will Cain Show.”
Tuberville leaned into his ties to President Donald Trump during his announcement, though the president has yet to make an official endorsement in the Alabama race.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do nationally. I&#8217;m looking forward to that with President Trump. He&#8217;s got us on the right track,” Tuberville continued. “Meantime, I will be running every weekend, doing the things I need to do to make sure that I can get over the threshold and win this governor&#8217;s race, come back to Alabama, and work with President Trump … because he&#8217;s fully supportive of this, to keep making America great again and put Alabama first.”

Tuberville’s announcement has long been expected. Expectations about his eventual candidacy warded off other potential candidates. Republican Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth <a href="https://www.facebook.com/willainsworthAL/posts/pfbid023SfWC35cTtduT4jjN5pRKFnNsH2Q9bYWySrBrfQasKsrnk5ryw31Q8km1XTo7RTxl?rdid=aNURcE1tbwMlobVB#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> last week that he would be forgoing the opportunity to run.
The Alabama gubernatorial race will be to replace outgoing Republican Governor Kay Ivey, who is termed out.
Tuberville began his career in politics toppling Democratic former Sen. Doug Jones from the U.S. Senate in 2020. Jones won a 2017 special election to replace former Sen. Jeff Sessions, who had left the Senate to serve as Trump’s attorney general. Sessions ran to reclaim his old seat in 2020, but lost in the GOP primary to Tuberville.
As for who might replace Tuberville in the Senate, <a href="https://www.semafor.com/article/05/27/2025/gop-chatters-about-auburn-coach-bruce-pearl-for-senate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Semafor</a> on Tuesday reported that Auburn University&#8217;s men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl seems to be eyeing a run. FBI director Kash Patel ripped his predecessor, James Comey, on Wednesday evening after Comey questioned Patel’s fitness to hold the post.
Patel appeared on Fox News&#8217; “Special Report” hosted by Bret Baier to respond to comments Comey had made earlier during an appearance on CNN. Patel said that Comey’s flippant use of social media had inspired a wave of potential threats against President Donald Trump’s life.
Earlier this month, Comey had posted, then deleted a picture off his Instagram page of seashells on a beach arranged to say, “86 47.” The former FBI director was immediately blasted for posting the message, widely understood to be a threat to Trump. “86” is commonly understood to mean “get rid of” and “47” is a reference to Trump as the 47th President of the United States.

Comey had previously attacked Patel on CNN, questioning his fitness to head the intelligence agency. Comey himself was fired as FBI director during Trump’s first term.

Kash Patel Says Comey Instagram Post Inspired Wave Of Potential Threats Against Trump

A U.S. federal court blocked President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs that slapped steep hikes on goods from dozens of foreign countries.
The New York-based Court of International Trade ruled on Wednesday that the president overstepped his authority in issuing the wide-ranging tariffs under emergency authority. The court said that the Constitution gives Congress the authority to regulate commerce with foreign countries, not the president.
The court effectively dissolved all tariffs Trump put in place using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, a 1977 law that had never been used to implement tariffs until Trump.
“The question in the two cases before the court is whether the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 (&#8216;IEEPA&#8217;) delegates these powers to the President in the form of authority to impose unlimited tariffs on goods from nearly every country in the world,” the court <a href="https://www.cit.uscourts.gov/sites/cit/files/25-66.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>. “The court does not read IEEPA to confer such unbounded authority and sets aside the challenged tariffs imposed thereunder.”
A three-judge panel issued the ruling based on two separate lawsuits – one brought by a group of businesses and the other filed on behalf of a dozen states.

“Because of the Constitution’s express allocation of the tariff power to Congress … we do not read IEEPA to delegate an unbounded tariff authority to the President. We instead read IEEPA’s provisions to impose meaningful limits on any such authority it confers,” the panel wrote. “The Worldwide and Retaliatory Tariffs lack any identifiable limits.”
The judges also said that there is no recognizable emergency to justify the use of the IEEPA to issue sweeping tariffs.
“The challenged Tariff Orders will be vacated and their operation permanently enjoined,” the judges wrote.
The order strikes a blow to what had been one of the key pillars of Trump’s economic policy. The Trump administration has alternatively defended tariffs as a way to rebuild U.S. manufacturing and also to pressure foreign countries into cutting better, more open trade agreements. Trump has also used tariffs to force other concessions on issues such as immigration and drug enforcement.

Federal Court Blocks Trump’s Sweeping ‘Liberation Day’ Tariffs

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he will “look at” issuing pardons for two men convicted of conspiring to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer in 2020.
Trump floated the potential pardons while taking questions from reporters in the Oval Office. The president said that he thought the two men – Barry Croft, 49, and Adam Fox, 42 – may have been “railroaded” by the FBI and prosecutors.
“I will take a look at it. It’s been brought to my attention. I did watch the trial. It looked to me like somewhat of a railroad job, I&#8217;ll be honest with you,” said Trump. “It looked to me like some people said some stupid things, you know. They were drinking, and I think they said stupid things, but I&#8217;ll take a look at that.”
“A lot of people are asking me that question from both sides, actually. A lot of people think they got railroaded. A lot of people think they got railroaded, and probably some people don’t,” he added.

A jury convicted Croft and Fox in August of 2022 of conspiring to kidnap Whitmer and of conspiring to obtain a weapon of mass destruction. Croft was found guilty of an additional weapons charge.
Croft was sentenced to just under 20 years in prison with an additional five years of supervised release. Fox was sentenced to 16 years in prison with five years supervised release.

The case against Croft and Fox was mired in controversy and embarrassment for the FBI. The two men were convicted on their second trial after the first ended in a mistrial. At the first trial, two other alleged co-conspirators, Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta, were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-orders-new-trial-for-whitmer-plot-alleged-masterminds-after-fbis-humiliation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">acquitted</a> after their attorneys argued that the FBI tactics used during the investigation amounted to entrapment.
Two other men, Ty Garbin and Kaleb Franks, had earlier pleaded guilty in connection with the conspiracy.
Much of the controversy around the FBI investigation into the plot to kidnap the governor revolved around two confidential human sources used by the FBI to gather evidence, Jenny Plunk and Steve Robeson. Both <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/whitmer-kidnapping-plot-fbi-informant-slept-in-the-same-room-smoked-weed-with-defendant" target="_blank" rel="noopener">smoked</a> marijuana with Croft during the investigation, a federal crime. Plunk also shared a hotel room with Croft at one point, raising further questions about the limits of the behavior of confidential human sources.
At one point during the investigation, the alleged conspiracists appeared to be headed for a split until FBI agent Christopher Long stepped in. Long <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-worked-to-keep-alleged-conspiracist-in-violent-group-headed-for-split" target="_blank" rel="noopener">directed</a> Plunk to try to keep the group of men together.

Trump To ‘Look At’ Pardons For Men Imprisoned Over Whitmer Kidnapping Plot: ‘Railroad Job’

An investigation by the Women&#8217;s National Basketball Association (WNBA) found no trace of racism toward the Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese during the Sky’s May 17 game against the Indiana Fever.
During the game, the court exploded into momentary chaos after the Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark fouled Reese as she attempted a layup. After the game, reports suggested that the tension was further fueled by racist comments from fans.
“We have investigated the report of racist fan behavior in the vicinity of the court during the May 17, 2025 Chicago Sky at Indiana Fever game. Based on information gathered to date, including the relevant fans, team and arena staff, as well as audio and video review of the game, we have not substantiated it. The WNBA is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for everyone and will continue to be vigilant in enforcing our fan code of conduct,” the WNBA said in a statement on Tuesday.

During the third quarter of an Opening Day bout between the Sky and Fever, Clark was called for a foul on Reese after Reese drove for a basket. Reese initially fell to the floor, but soon was up and ran toward Clark. Clark continued walking back toward the Fever bench.
At the end of the ensuing scuffle, Clark was called for a flagrant foul while Reese and the Fever’s Aliyah Boston received technicals, according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/05/27/sports/wnba-probe-did-not-find-substantial-evidence-of-fever-fan-racism/">New York Post</a>.
Clark later dismissed controversy over her foul against Reese.

The day after the controversy, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/angel-reese-sky-racial-slurs-f77dd6072d1bcb0fc327ed72bbcf0b73">reported</a> that the WNBA was investigating a report of racist slurs hurled at Reese during the game.
“The WNBA strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms — they have no place in our league or in society,” the basketball league said in a statement at the time. “We are aware of the allegations and are looking into the matter.”
Reese backed the investigation, <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/wnba/breaking-news/article/wnba-investigation-reports-of-racist-fan-behavior-directed-at-angel-reese-during-fever-sky-game-not-substantiated-224851242.html">saying</a> several days later that “obviously, there&#8217;s no place in this league for that.”
“I think the WNBA and our team and our organization have done a great job supporting me. I&#8217;ve had communication from everyone, from so many people across this league,” she said.
After the alleged racist comments could not be substantiated, Pacers Sports &amp; Entertainment CEO Mel Raines issued a statement reiterating the WNBA’s findings.
&#8220;We appreciate the swift and thorough process undertaken by the WNBA to investigate these allegations, which were not substantiated,” Raines <a href="https://x.com/ItsMeghanLHall/status/1927477305703563404">said</a>.
Chicago Sky President Adam Fox <a href="https://x.com/chicagosky/status/1927490001983426691">thanked</a> the WNBA and Indiana Fever for the “quick action” to investigate the allegations.

HOAX ALERT: WNBA Says It Found No Evidence Of Racism After Clark-Reese Clash

The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against North Carolina and its elections board on Tuesday over its maintenance of voter rolls.
The Justice Department’s lawsuit says that the North Carolina State Board of Elections violated federal election law and risked the integrity of its voter rolls. Voters in the state were allowed to register without providing identification, such as a driver’s license, in violation of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), according to the suit.
“Defendants have failed to maintain accurate lists in North Carolina’s computerized statewide voter registration in violation of Section 303(a)(5) of HAVA and the sacred trust that the people of the State of North Carolina have put in them to ensure the fairness and integrity of elections for Federal office in the state, necessitating this litigation,” the <a href="https://www.justice.gov/crt/media/1401636/dl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lawsuit</a> says.
President Donald Trump signed an <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/03/preserving-and-protecting-the-integrity-of-american-elections/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">executive order</a> in March directing the Justice Department to vigorously enforce federal election laws.
“Above all, elections must be honest and worthy of the public trust. That requires voting methods that produce a voter-verifiable paper record allowing voters to efficiently check their votes to protect against fraud or mistake. Election-integrity standards must be modified accordingly. It is the policy of my Administration to enforce Federal law and to protect the integrity of our election process,” the order states.

The Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice is responsible for enforcing the president’s directive on election integrity. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who heads the Civil Rights Division, said in a <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-files-help-america-vote-act-lawsuit-against-north-carolina-inaccurate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>: “Accurate voter registration rolls are critical to ensure that elections in North Carolina are conducted fairly, accurately, and without fraud.”
“The Department of Justice will not hesitate to file suit against jurisdictions that maintain inaccurate voter registration rolls in violation of federal voting laws,” Dhillon added.
Sam Hayes, the executive director of the North Carolina elections board, acknowledged shortcomings in the state’s voter registration process.
“I was only recently notified of this action by the United States Department of Justice. We are still reviewing the complaint, but the failure to collect the information required by HAVA has been well documented. The Alabama gubernatorial race will be to replace outgoing Republican Governor Kay Ivey, who is termed out.
Tuberville began his career in politics toppling Democratic former Sen. Doug Jones from the U.S. Senate in 2020. Jones won a 2017 special election to replace former Sen. Jeff Sessions, who had left the Senate to serve as Trump’s attorney general. Sessions ran to reclaim his old seat in 2020, but lost in the GOP primary to Tuberville.
As for who might replace Tuberville in the Senate, <a href="https://www.semafor.com/article/05/27/2025/gop-chatters-about-auburn-coach-bruce-pearl-for-senate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Semafor</a> on Tuesday reported that Auburn University&#8217;s men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl seems to be eyeing a run. Pearl is &#8220;an outspoken Israel supporter and opponent of antisemitism,&#8221; Semafor notes.
