The world’s greatest football player of all time Tom Brady is reportedly set to produce and act in a road trip comedy based on a true story about four lifelong friends who journey to Super Bowl LI to see their idol — Brady — play in the big game. Brady retired this past January after crushing several NFL career records and winning seven Super Bowl titles over 22 seasons.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Sally Field will star in the movie, titled “80 for Brady.”

“Brady (the movie, not the player) will be directed by Kyle Marvin, who also co-wrote the script with Michael Covino,” The Hollywood Reporter added. “Marvin, who appears as an actor in the upcoming Apple limited series WeCrashed and co-wrote and starred in indie movie The Climb, is also executive producing with Covino, under the duo’s Watch This Ready banner, and Jeff Stott.”

Brady is playing himself and the story is centered on the idea of four New England Patriots fans traveling to see him play in the 2017 Super Bowl “and the chaos that ensues as they navigate the wilds of the biggest sporting event in the country.”

In real life, Brady played in Super Bowl LI and led the New England Patriots back from a 28-3 deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime. Brady won his fifth Super Bowl ring in that game and his fourth Super Bowl MVP.

Accordingly, “production is due to begin this spring. Marvin and Covino wrote the latest script based on a draft by Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins, known for co-writing the coming-of-age movie Booksmart.”

Acting had been rumored to be part of Brady’s post-retirement career plan. In 2015, a source close to Brady said that he planned on going into acting following his retirement, as noted by Bleacher Report:

“At 37, Tom knows he only has a few seasons left before retirement. He’s thinking ahead and believes he could become a huge movie star,” the source said. “He’s used to being a superstar. After winning the Super Bowl again, he’s thinking about new challenges outside of football.”

Brady only had four rings at that time and went on to win three more, most recently in 2021 with his second team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The concept of friendship, as “80 for Brady” is based on, is something deeply important to Brady. After announcing his retirement, Brady shared a video saying “I played for the name on the front of my jersey and the name on the back of my jersey. I played for my friends, my family & our community – every single one of you – that have given me what I have today. I love you all. Thank you ALL for making this incredible journey possible.”
