Progressive Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) is set to deliver a response for the Working Families Party after President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address on Tuesday.
“It’s an honor to deliver the Working Families Party response to President Biden’s State of the Union, and I am especially excited to elevate the voices of the working-class residents in my district and across the nation,” Tlaib said in a statement, per The Hill. “It should not be this hard to deliver on healthcare, climate, housing, child care, safety, voting rights, clean water and so much more.”
“Democrats are in the majority and must set a new course that moves with a sense of urgency. Our communities deserve for us to act now,” she added.
Politico reported that Tlaib is expected to criticize moderate Democrats who have hindered Biden’s social spending and climate legislation.
“Tlaib will praise Biden’s stimulus bill and make the case that liberals have pushed aggressively for his agenda, according to a summary of her remarks shared exclusively with POLITICO. She is also planning to argue that Republicans and a handful of intransigent Democrats have blocked progress on lowering the cost of housing, health care and prescription drugs,” the outlet added.
“No one fought harder for Build Back Better and a pro-democracy agenda than progressives,” Tlaib told Politico in a statement. “The work is unfinished and we’re not giving up on what our communities deserve. We need to get as much done for the people as we can this year, and elect a majority that can deliver for working families in 2023.”
It’s not typical practice for the president’s party to deliver a response, but the Working Families Party has done so in the past, with Representative Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) delivering such remarks after Biden’s initial joint address to Congress last year.
Tlaib will reportedly conclude her remarks by calling on people to assist in electing progressives across the nation this year. She “will also call for Biden to use his executive authority to cancel student loan debt and change the way poverty is calculated in order to expand benefits to more Americans, according to the synopsis of her remarks,” per Politico.
“Rep. Tlaib is a fearless progressive who wakes up every day to fight for working people, and we’re thrilled for her to deliver the WFP State of the Union Response,” Maurice Mitchell, the Working Families Party’s director, reportedly said in a statement. “Obstructionist Republicans and a handful of corporate Democrats have ground Washington to a standstill while child poverty spikes and costs continue to rise for housing, healthcare, and childcare.”
Biden’s “agenda is incomplete,” Mitchell said, per Politico. “We’re going to be clear about who and why the agenda is incomplete. There are particular political actors — of course Republicans, but then a very niche, small group of obstructionist Democrats. And we’re going to name names.”
As The Daily Wire reported, Governor Kim Reynolds (R-IA) will deliver the Republican Party’s response to Biden’s State of the Union.
“Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy announced the decision in a joint press release Tuesday. The Republican address will follow Biden’s address next Tuesday, March 1,” The Daily Wire noted.
“While Washington Democrats fail working Americans, Republican governors are fighting and winning for families,” McConnell said in the statement. “Governor Kim Reynolds’ brave, bold, and successful leadership for Iowans has put her right at the front of that pack. She fought COVID without forgetting common sense and protected Iowans’ health and their rights at the same time. She’s defended kids and parents with laws that have kept students in classrooms and woke propaganda out. She has even taken action to address our border crisis while the Biden Administration makes it worse. I am thrilled the American people will hear directly from Gov. Reynolds. The President and his team should take notes.”
