Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) was slammed online late this week after suggesting that she was a hard worker while Republicans just “sit around on leather chairs all day.”

“The thing that these conservative Senators don’t seem to understand is that I’ve actually had a physically difficult working-class job without good healthcare most of my adult life,” Ocasio-Cortez claimed on Twitter. “I bring that work ethic to Congress & to my community. They sit around on leather chairs all day.”

“Republicans like to make fun of the fact that I used to be a waitress, but we all know if they ever had to do a double they’d be the ones found crying in the walk-in fridge halfway through their first shift bc someone yelled at them for bringing seltzer when they wanted sparkling,” she added.

Ocasio-Cortez, 31, received immediate pushback over her remarks from Republicans and conservatives who noted that most people work physically demanding jobs when they are younger.

Kasey Lovett, press secretary for Ben Carson, wrote on Twitter: “This is wrong. I was a waitress for 5+ years throughout high school and college. I am a Republican and I cried in walk-in fridges just like you. The difference between us? I don’t expect the government to provide for me. I make my own $ and provide for myself.”

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) trolled Ocasio-Cortez over her claim that Republicans just “sit around on leather chairs all day” by tweeting out photographs over her doing just that.

Congressman-elect Burgess Owens responded: “You used to be a waitress, I was a chimney sweep. Both stand as a testament to the great opportunity we have in America. The difference is, as conservatives we believe ‘if I can do it you can do it’ and are fighting to make sure that never changes.”

Daily Caller editor Virginia Kruta responded: “I spent my first week in the Army on 4 hours of sleep a night and a sprained ankle, digging one hole to fill in the hole I had just dug the hour before. Cry me a river (‘cuz I didn’t).”

Rep. Kevin Hern (R-OK) responded: “You might want to fact check yourself, @AOC … I spent years flipping burgers full time while writing code and farming in my spare time – and many of my colleagues have similar stories. You don’t corner the market on hard lives.”

Congresswoman-elect Mary Miller responded: “Hey, @AOC , if you don’t mind getting your $58 sweater dirty and can handle the cow farts, I’ll show you how we work on the farm.”

Conservative commentator Allie Beth Stuckey wrote: “I am confused as to why you think there are no working class Republicans who have a much harder life than you. There are.”

NewsBusters Managing Editor Curtis Houck responded: “Sadly, plenty of lefties believe this, despite knowing conservatives and Republicans in their families and classes didn’t grow up in places of wealth and prestige. It grinds my gears knowing people who’ve known us our whole lives believe we’re only rich, white, privileged loons.”
