“Yellowjackets” star Liv Hewson said the actor won’t compete for an Emmy award for the role of Vanessa “Van” Palmer on the hit Showtime series because of gendered acting categories.

The 27-year-old Australian actor said there was not an available category that would fit, opting instead to simply bow out of this year’s Primetime Emmys despite being eligible in the main acting races, Variety reported.

“There’s not a place for me in the acting categories,” Hewson said. “It would be inaccurate for me to submit myself as an actress. It neither makes sense for me to be lumped in with the boys.”

“It’s quite straightforward and not that loaded,” the star added. “I can’t submit myself for this because there’s no space for me.”

Hewson is probably best known for the role of Abby Hammond in the Netflix series “Santa Clarita Diet.” Hewson was part of the series from 2017 to 2019, the outlet noted.

At the age of 16, Hewson came out and announced the actor was “non-binary” and went by “they/them” pronouns.

Showtime had reportedly planned to submit Hewson’s work on the series for supporting drama actress along with other stars on the show like actress Christina Ricci, The Daily Mail noted.

The comments about the award categories come as various award shows have opted for the ridiculous decision of getting rid of gender acting categories for lead and supporting categories.

Most recently, the Film Independent’s Spirit Awards said the organization would no longer use categories like “best actor” and “best actress” to celebrate stars in TV and movies in lead and supporting roles, according to a statement posted on the group’s website, as previously reported.

“We’re thrilled to join the other festivals and award shows that are already moving to celebrate great acting without reference to gender,” Film Independent President Josh Welsh shared in a press release.

“We’re also happy to welcome non-binary performers into the Spirit Awards without forcing them to choose to identify as male or female,” he added. “Additionally, it has been a long time since we substantially increased the budget limit for eligibility. This new cap allows us to continue to celebrate the same breadth of work that we have in the past.”
