<p>Did you hear the story about the poor, the mentally ill, and the French?</p>
<p>Well, not in the pages of the Associated Press, you didn&#8217;t. According to the AP&#8217;s official Style Guide, all three of those terms are offensive and &#8220;dehumanizing.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;We recommend avoiding general and often dehumanizing &#8216;the&#8217; labels such as the poor, the mentally ill, the French, the disabled, the college-educated. Instead, use wording such as people with mental illnesses,&#8221; the AP&#8217;s Style Guide tweeted. &#8220;And use these descriptions only when clearly relevant.&#8221;</p>
<p>Based on that logic, you should refer to the French as &#8220;people experiencing Frenchness&#8221; or maybe &#8220;people with Frenchness.&#8221;</p>
<p>Whatever it is, it&#8217;s all a bit silly — but it is part of the Left&#8217;s larger trend to dominate and transform language to meet their goals.</p>
<p>Before we touch upon that, let&#8217;s ponder what a Frenchman might think about this. This author isn&#8217;t one, so he reached out to <del datetime="2023-01-26T19:38:39+00:00">the French</del> Embassy representing France in Washington, D.C., to find out if the term &#8220;the French&#8221; is offensive.</p>
<p>They haven&#8217;t responded thus far.</p>
<p>Until they do, readers might enjoy some reactions to the inane tweet.</p>
<p>The Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro responded, &#8220;I agree, these days we probably should label ‘the college-educated’ people with mental illnesses instead.&#8221;</p>
<p>He also added, &#8220;Also, we should stop calling people &#8216;the French&#8217; and instead call them &#8216;people suffering from cheese-eating surrender monkeyness,’” in reference to a line from &#8220;The Simpsons.”</p>

<p>As pointed out by Ezra Levant of Rebel News, the AP actually has no problem referring to a group of people as &#8220;the,” as in &#8220;the unvaccinated.&#8221;</p>

<p>Of course, the real reason for this nonsense is political correctness. Writers should be concerned with being precise and telling the truth, not necessarily with whether they offend people or not.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not just the AP doing this garbage either. Readers will know that rather than call illegal aliens, well, illegal aliens, the Biden administration refers to them as &#8220;people who are coming irregularly to migrate.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yet, they crossed the border illegally and are aliens to this land, ergo illegal aliens. One would hope that the Biden administration is more concerned with stopping those people from entering the country in the first place — not whether or not word choice hurts their feelings.</p>
<p>Similarly, the AP should be concerned with reporting accurate information. They aren&#8217;t though. They are concerned with pushing the agenda of social justice warriors who want to bastardize the English language in order to transform culture.</p>
<p>In addition to that, they just sound like Michael Scott from “The Office.” Scott was also confused why his employee, Oscar, would refer to himself as Mexican. The &#8220;world&#8217;s best boss&#8221; was under the impression that “Mexican” was an offensive term.</p>

<p>Michael Scott, of course, is a moron, but doesn&#8217;t realize it. The same can be said of the editors at the AP.</p>
