Taco Bell restaurants across America have begun pulling specific ingredients from their menus as a parasite outbreak linked to “explosive diarrhea” continues to spread.
The popular fast food chain is putting up signs warning customers at numerous locations across the country, including those in Metro Detroit, WWJ reported.
“We are currently unable to sell Lettuce, Cilantro Onion, Pico de Gallo, and Guacamole due to a nationwide recall. We apologize for any inconvenience. Any items ordered that normally come with these items will NOT contain them,” a posted notice at a Metro Detroit Taco Bell read, per WWJ.
The four ingredients listed in the notice are a significant part of the fast food chain’s menu, including popular menu items such as the Crunchwrap Supreme.
The move is currently seen as precautionary, and it remains “unclear if anyone who ate at a Taco Bell got sick,” per the report.
The Cyclospora parasite causes “explosive bowel movements” and “watery diarrhea” symptoms that could last for a month or even longer, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In Michigan alone, 992 cases have been tied to the recent surge, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. New York City’s health department has reported 273 cases since May 1. The cyclosporiasis epidemic is also affecting Ohio, North Carolina, Illinois, Colorado, Texas, Florida, and Connecticut.
The affected ingredients will remain off the menu until the cause of the spread is found. Health officials continue to investigate the source of contamination as Taco Bell maintains its precautionary measures.
