The Chosen” creator Dallas Jenkins said both “extreme pain and sadness” and also “some extreme joy” is what fans can expect for Season 4 when it hits theaters first exclusively in February.

The creator of the popular faith-based series, which explores the life of Jesus through those who were closest to him, said that everyone knew that the series was building toward Christ’s crucifixion, calling the new season an “increasingly heavy” time for Jesus and his followers.

“We’re getting closer and closer to what we know is coming,” Jenkins told Fox News. “There’s some extreme pain and sadness that’s coming soon in future seasons.”

“And of course, there’s also some extreme joy that’s coming,” he added. “But on the way there, Jesus is getting increasingly sad because of the fact that things are getting increasingly heavy.”

“Not just because we know that he’s going to suffer, but he’s sad because the followers around him and the city that is the holy city, the city that is the birthplace of our faith, doesn’t get it,” Jenkins continued.

The trailer for season four recently dropped and clips of actor Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus, show him shedding tears, something the show’s creator is “an important part of the story.”

“Now, I will say also there’s lots of joy, there’s lots of laughter, there’s lots of miracles that we get to experience, which is one of the reasons why we want people to see this on the big screen and see this together,” Jenkins said. “But season 4 is a time where the fact that the people around Jesus just aren’t quite getting it and the reason that he’s here does start to get bigger and more important in his ministry.”

In a post on Instagram, Jenkins wrote that the new season is “heavy and easily our deepest, most challenging, and most mature season yet. And this teaser reflects that. But I and the team agree … it’s our best.”

“We poured our hearts out for this season,” the message added. “There are more trailers to come, but I wanted to give you an early look at what’s coming. I can’t wait to show you more.”

Starting in 2024 — following the release of three episodes of season three on the big screen last year — the first three episodes of season four will hit theaters starting February 1, 2024, and run for two weeks. It will be followed by a release on February 15 of the next three episodes, 4-6. The conclusion will hit the big screen on February 29, when fans can catch the last two episodes, 7-8.

“The Chosen” Season 4 will be distributed by Fathom Events.
