Entertainer Macy Gray responded to the backlash she’s faced after making what some have deemed “transphobic” comments when she said “just because you go change your parts,” it doesn’t “make you a woman.”

The 54-year-old singer took to her Twitter and told her critics of her interview with Piers Morgan on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” that they would be hard press to find a bigger supporter of the “lgbt community.” She then somewhat appeared to try and soften her earlier statements by saying that “woman” is a title “that you earn and become.”

“There is no bigger admirer of lgbt community than [yours] truly,” Gray tweeted Monday to her 80 thousand plus followers. “It takes real balls to be honest about who you are. ‘woman’ is a title that you earn and become. just like ‘man,’ there are plenty of females who aren’t women yet and every girl gets that.”

“I wasn’t defining trans women. just women,” she added in a follow-up tweet. “Because I know what it means to be one. I don’t know what it means to be a trans woman and never said I did. but that goes both ways.”

The “Sweet Baby” singer also labeled one article in Rolling Stone magazine about her original comments as “the most biased, wrong taking things out of context – column ever written.”

During the singer’s appearance on Morgan’s show on Monday, Gray and the host discussed transgender athletes in female sports competitions, as The Daily Wire previously reported.

“And I will say this and everyone’s gonna hate me, but as a woman, just because you go change your parts, doesn’t make you a woman, sorry,” the singer shared.

“I know that for a fact,” she added. “Like if you want me to call you a ‘her,’ I will, ’cause that’s what you want, but that doesn’t make you a woman just ’cause I call you a ‘her’ and just ’cause you got a surgery.”

In a statement to Rolling Stone, Gray said that she has “nothing but love for the LGBTQ+ and transgender community” and that her “statement on Piers Morgan was grossly misunderstood.”

“I don’t hate anyone,” the statement added. “I respect everyone’s right to feel comfortable in their bodies and live their own truth.”
