Sinéad O’Connor was finally laid to rest on Tuesday as thousands lined the route leading to her final resting place at a Catholic cemetery after she received a Muslim burial at a private ceremony.

The Irish singer’s funeral was attended by musicians and celebrities like singer Bono and Bob Geldof along with Irish President Michael D. Higgins and those closest to her following news of her death in July at 56 years old, Daily Mail reported.

After the service, a hearse carried her coffin through the streets filled with 5,000 mourners who showed up to pay tribute to the singer as Bob Marley was played before her body was laid to rest at Deansgrange Cemetery near Dublin, the outlet noted. Photos from the cemetery show mourners having adorned the “Nothing Compares 2 U” hitmaker’s grave with hundreds of flowers. A brass plaque on a wooden plinth was placed at her grave that read, “Sinéad O’Connor. Born 8th December 1966. Died 26th July 2023.”

The singer, who converted to Islam in 2018, was placed lying on her right side with her head facing Qibla, as is Islamic custom, the outlet noted. Islamic scholar and Chief Imam at the Islamic Centre of Ireland Shaykh Dr. Umar Al-Qadri officiated the ceremony and offered prayers. He posted a picture on X later showing himself at her grave along with a message that read, “The Muslim World mourns the loss of the Daughter of Ireland Sister Sinéad O’Connor (Shuhada). May she rest in peace.”

Umar told the PA News Agency that “the funeral was obviously private (for) the family and it was a very moving ceremony and I think it really reflected the beautiful personality of Sinéad.”

“It was very spiritual and it reflected her Irish identity as well as her Muslim identity,” he added. “So I was with the members of the Muslim community and we performed the Janazah prayer, which is the Islamic funeral prayer, over Sinéad.”

“She was an amazing human being who was not just a great musician, artist, but one that would reach hearts of millions of people because of her voice but also because of the amazing content,” the leader continued. “Whatever she said, had a deep meaning. She had always had strong faith and conviction in God and that is what motivated her to study theology.”
