On Friday, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey apologized to Turning Point USA Communications Director Candace Owens after the platform falsely labeled her as being “far-right,” which many people saw as an attempt to smear her.
The label from Twitter came after Kanye West wrote in a tweet that he liked the way Owens thinks, which ignited a firestorm.
Kanye’s comments turned into a “moment” on Twitter and appeared on the platform’s trending now section which both labeled her as being “far-right.”
Owens called out Twitter, writing: “Far right? Allow me to clarify: I believe the black community can do it without hand-outs. I believe the Democrats have strapped us to our past to prevent us from our futures. And I won’t stop fighting until all black Americans see that. I’m not far right—I’m free.”
After the tweet received more than 29,000 retweets over the course of six days, Dorsey finally reached out to Owens, writing: “Hi Candace. I want to apologize for our labeling you “far right.” Team completed a full review of how this was published and why we corrected far too late (12 hrs after). There was a clear break in our curation process and understanding, and we’re fixing. Thanks for calling out.”
