On Monday, ESPN revealed that WNBA star Sue Bird and professional soccer standout Megan Rapinoe, an apparent lesbian “power couple” in the industry, are to appear on the cover of ESPN The Magazine’s body issue, in celebration of the issue’s 10th anniversary.
According to ABC News, this is the first time an LGBTQ couple has been featured on such a cover.
“The highly-anticipated body issue, which annually features athletes baring all, always aims to celebrate diversity, and this year includes three other women on the covers: soccer player Crystal Dunn, softball player Lauren Chamberlain, and basketball star Breanna Stewart,” reports ABC.
Taking to Twitter, Bird and Rapinoe posted some of the nude photos to their accounts. The hoops star first posted the cover:
Bird also posted a photo the couple “in motion.” Bird is shooting a jumper and Rapinoe is about to strike a soccer ball.
Rapinoe posted more nude photos from the shoot, as well:
The body issue is apparently all about “diversity.” In years past, for example, the magazine featured transgender athlete Chris Mosier.
The magazine’s body issue will be accessible nationwide on Friday.
