Texas has obtained 1,700 panels originally designed for the Trump border wall to use in Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s effort to “secure the border.”
“After Biden halted construction of Trump’s border wall hundreds of unused wall panels were left at construction sites,” Abbott tweeted.
“Texas has obtained 1,700 of those unused panels to help build the wall,” he added. “They had been declared surplus–now they secure the border.”

The Texas Tribune first reported the news of the state’s plans to use the border wall barriers for the state’s own barrier.
“Francoise Luca, a spokesperson for the Facilities Commission, said the state didn’t have to disclose to the federal government that it planned to use the panels for Texas’ border wall project, adding that the state followed the surplus program’s rules,” The Tribune reported.
“In December, the Facilities Commission hired New York-based Posillico Civil Inc. to haul the panels from San Diego to Eagle Pass at a cost of $2 million, according to the contract awarded to the engineering firm. The company finished the job earlier this month,” it added.
The panels are expected to cover approximately 1.3 miles of the Lone Star State’s border barrier.
President Joe Biden signed an executive order upon entering office in January 2021 that ended the construction of the wall partly constructed under former President Donald Trump.
After months of planning, Abbott announced in December that Texas had started the first stretch of its own wall.
“Texas has officially started building its own border wall,” Abbott tweeted.
“Biden allows open border policies and refuses to enforce laws passed by Congress to secure the border and enforce immigration laws,” The governor added. “Texas is stepping up to do the federal government’s job.”

The Daily Wire previously reported concerning Abbott’s plan to construct its own barrier to complete unfinished gaps in Trump’s border wall in June:
“The influx across the border is out of control, and the Biden Administration has shown that is not going to step up and do its job,” Abbott said. “And amidst reports of even more people coming in across the border, we know we have to step up and do more.”
Abbott noted that if the Biden administration will not enforce its message that the borders are not open then the state of Texas will.
“What people have seen in videos across the country seems to be the Biden Administration welcoming these people to the United States. We won’t be sending that message,” Abbott told Breitbart in an interview. “If you come to Texas, you’re subject to being arrested. You’re not going to have a pathway to roam the country. You’re going to have a pathway directly into a jail cell.”
The news also follows a border crisis surge to end 2021. “CBP FINALLY released December 2021 numbers for illegal crossings along the southern border: 178,840,” GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy’s staffer Mark Bednar tweeted on January 24.
“That’s more than Decembers 2018, 2019, & 2020 COMBINED,” he noted.
