Samuel L. Jackson Reveals What Precautions He Takes To Protect Himself From AI

Samuel L. Jackson said he knew years ago that artificial intelligence could be something to worry about in his business and has revealed what kind of precautions he takes to protect himself from the technology.

During the 74-year-old actor’s recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Jackson talked about the impact of AI in Hollywood and said it’s why he’s refused to allow language like using his likeness “in perpetuity” in contracts.

Jackson admitted the idea of this “could be something to worry about. Future actors should do what I always do when I get a contract, and it has the words ‘in perpetuity’ and ‘known and unknown’ on it: I cross that s*** out.”

“It’s my way of saying, ‘No, I do not approve of this,'” he added.

The “Star Wars” franchise star said he had his first experience with AI a long time ago when he got scanned for George Lucas for ‘The Phantom Menace.” He said he’d had similar experiences with the technology as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the movies where he’s played Nick Fury.

“Ever since I’ve been in the Marvel Universe, every time you change costumes in a Marvel movie, they scan you,” Jackson said. “Ever since I did ‘Captain Marvel,’ and they did the Lola project where they de-aged me and everything else, it’s like, ‘Well, I guess they can do this anytime they want to do it if they really want to!'”

Jackson’s not the only one in Hollywood that has experience with the technology. Stars like Harrison Ford, Keanu Reeves, and others have started to speak out.

“They have this artificial intelligence program that can go through every foot of film that Lucasfilm owns,” Ford said of George Lucas’ production company, making him look younger in the final film in the “Indiana Jones” franchise.

“They have all this footage, including film that wasn’t printed,” he added. “So they can mine it from where the light is coming from, from the expression. I don’t know how they do it. But that’s my actual face. Then I put little dots on my face, and I say the words, and they make [it]. It’s fantastic.”

Reeves, who famously played a character who fought AI in the 1999 sci-fi thriller, “The Matrix,” isn’t as keen on the technology.

“Early on, in the early 2000s, or it might have been the ’90s, I had a performance changed,” Reeves said. “They added a tear to my face, and I was just like, ‘Huh?!’ It was like, ‘I don’t even have to be here.'”
