Robert Pattinson is the latest actor to become the Caped Crusader in the new movie, “The Batman.”
Over the decades many Hollywood stars took on the role with mixed results depending on their approach. Pattinson said during a recent interview that he had initially thought about making a change to Batman’s signature gravelly voice before thinking better of it.
“Everyone does this kind of gruff, gravelly thing, and I’m like, ‘I’m going to do the opposite — I’m gonna go really whispery,’” Pattinson told Jimmy Kimmel during a Wednesday night appearance on the late night show. “And I tried to do it for the first two weeks, and it just looked absolutely atrocious, and they told me to stop doing it.”
Pattinson went on to explain how he wasn’t the first Batman actor to experiment with voice alterations.
“I found out from Nick, who was putting me in the suit every day, that’s what Christian Bale did on ‘Batman Begins’ as well,” Pattinson told Kimmel. “And if you listen to the first ‘Batman Begins’ teaser trailer, you can hear the original voice. I only found this out a couple of weeks ago.”
In the end, the “Twilight” alum said turning into Batman isn’t so much a conscious decision as it is a feeling. He said, “You can feel when it feels right. You put the suit on, and you have to speak in a certain way.”
The “Batman” actor also discussed another idea he had for the role which was ultimately nixed.
“One of the first things that Matt said to me — he’s like, ‘He’s sort of inspired by Kurt Cobain,’” the actor said. “I’m like, ‘Really? That’s kind of the opposite of what I imagined Bruce Wayne to be.’”
But then Pattinson got shot down when he pitched copying Cobain’s signature grunge style for Batman’s wardrobe, which is nowhere close to how Bruce Wayne usually dresses. That idea was shot down along with the voice change.
“So you had a lot of bad ideas to start with,” Kimmel quipped.
Pattinson said with a laugh, “Tons.”
“The Batman” stars Pattinson opposite Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman. Excitement is heating up for the latest iteration, which will be released in March.
In 2020, director Matt Reeves explained during a DC Comics virtual FanDome event that the film follows the “early days” of Batman when Bruce Wayne is “very far from being perfect.”
No doubt the studio is hoping to capitalize on fans who have proven that they’re ready to return to movie theaters, especially when superhero movies are on the menu. The latest blockbuster, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” broke box office records for revenue raking in more than $880 million.
Pattinson also revealed to Kimmel that he’s scared about the release.
“I was absolutely terrified,” the actor said. “I haven’t been this scared to release a movie in a long time.”
“If you’re a bad Batman, there’s no bigger disaster than that, is there?” Kimmel replied.
“That’s what everyone keeps telling me,” Pattinson said. “They’re like, if all fails, you’ll still be part of something really special. I’m like, I don’t want to be the worst one, that’s what I get remembered for.”
