Rita Wilson hit back at headlines that claimed she and her husband, Tom Hanks, were seen “scolding” a man on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in France, saying the truth didn’t “sell stories.”
The 66-year-old actress on Tuesday posted on Tuesday a screenshot on social media of a Daily Mail article reporting Wilson and Hanks appearing to have a tense exchange at the event.
The headline read, “Tom Hanks ‘Embroiled In Heated Altercation’ At ‘Asteroid City’ Premiere In Cannes.” Wilson and the “Forrest Gump” star were at the festival for the premiere of their Wes Anderson movie “Asteroid City.”
The actress captioned the screenshot, “This is called I can’t hear you. People are screaming. What did you say? Where are we supposed to go?'”

“But that doesn’t sell stories! Nice try,” she added. “Go see Asteroid City!”
Before Wilson responded to the report, headlines surfaced showing images of the “Cast Away” star pointing and making terse looks at the man, Page Six noted. In another photo, Wilson and Hanks are both gesturing in opposite directions, possibly appearing to get instructions about where to go.
Festival employee Vincent Chaplain (who has identified himself as the man on the red carpet with them) also responded to the reports, tweeting, “They just asked me if they should go back to the start of the mat with the rest of the film crew (I’m not security) wink.”
