Washington, D.C., police have announced that Isis Jones, a 26-year-old woman accused of stealing a bottle of wine from Trader Joe’s and threatening a store employee with a crossbow, has been arrested.
D.C. police confirmed to The Daily Wire that Jones was a female and in a press release issued Monday, authorities announced that she had been taken into custody and is facing charges for assault with a dangerous weapon as well as theft:
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District announce an arrest has been made in reference to an Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Crossbow) offense that occurred on Sunday, December 26, 2021, in the 1900 block of 14th Street, Northwest.
At approximately 12:55 pm, the suspects were inside of a store at the listed location. One of the suspects concealed merchandise in order to steal it. An employee confronted the suspect and the suspect then brandished a crossbow and pointed it in the direction of the employee. Both suspects then fled the scene.
On Monday, December 27, 2021, 26 year-old Isis Jones, of Northwest, DC, was arrested and charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Crossbow) and Theft Two.
According to media, Jones and an unknown suspect had stolen a bottle of wine before using the crossbow to get away from the scene.
The arrest comes as the nation’s capital grapples with rising violent crime. According to official D.C. data, violent crime has risen 3% since the end of 2020, but homicides have risen 14%. Likewise, violent crime has jumped from 3,964 reported incidents in 2020 to 4,067 in 2021.
The Daily Wire has previously reported that D.C. broke records not seen since 2003 earlier this year after 200 homicides were reported in the city. That number has since climbed to 225. The Washington Post had reported that the surge in crime came after more than 200 officers had left the force for one reason or another:
D.C. Police Chief Robert J. Contee III said getting to 200 homicides was “very troubling,” stating “lives that matter in our city were unnecessarily taken away too soon,” per the Post.
The outlet added, “[t]here are nearly 200 fewer D.C. officers this year than last year, according to the department, the lowest in two decades.”
D.C. is not alone in its rising crime problem. CNN recently reported that at least nine cities have broken homicide records across the country:
At least nine major cities have broken their previous annual homicide records with about three weeks left to go in 2021. There have been 513 homicides this year in Philadelphia, higher than the previous total of 503 in 1990. There have been 230 homicides in Indianapolis, breaking the previous record of 215 set just last year.
These increases are not isolated to any particular region of the country. Other cities with record homicide totals include Louisville, Kentucky; Columbus, Ohio; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Tucson, Arizona; Rochester, New York; and Portland, Oregon. Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Nashville are also on pace to reach record homicide numbers by the end of the year.
Los Angeles recorded 352 homicides so far this year, and Chicago has seen 756, with year-to-date increases of 12% and 4% respectively. In Houston, homicides are up 18% from 2020.
D.C. police are asking the public for help in locating Jones’ alleged accomplice.
