Associates of then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton fed allegations to ex-British spy Christopher Steele, the man who created the salacious and unverified anti-Trump dossier, as he was compiling the dossier in 2016.
The new allegations against Steele came in an unclassified memo from Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who are calling for an “emergency review of their criminal referral [for Steele] so it can be made public, with limited redactions.” Fox News reports:
“It is troubling enough that the Clinton Campaign funded Mr. Steele’s work, but that these Clinton associates were contemporaneously feeding Mr. Steele allegations raises additional concerns about his credibility,” the senators wrote to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees the Russia probe, and FBI Director Christopher Wray.
“… there is substantial evidence suggesting that Mr. Steele materially misled the FBI about a key aspect of his dossier efforts, one which bears on his credibility,” the senators wrote.
Grassley and Graham are requesting that the FBI and Department of Justice (DOJ) “immediately review the classified referral in light of [Friday’s] declassification and provide the Committee with the declassified version by no later than February 6, 2018.”
These latest developments further discredit the anti-Trump dossier, which was paid for by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. The release of the House Intelligence Committee’s memo on Friday revealed that the anti-Trump dossier was the document that allowed the Obama administration to obtain a FISA warrant to spy on Carter Page, an associate of the Trump campaign. In the memo, it was revealed that Steele “was desperate that Donald Trump not get elected and was passionate about him not being president.”
