Following a major legal victory from a watchdog group, audio recordings of former President Joe Biden’s conversations with his memoir ghostwriter — which Special Counsel Robert Hur obtained during his classified-documents investigation — could be released as soon as August 3.
The U.S. Court of Appeals late Monday night rejected Biden’s emergency request to prevent the release of audio recordings of his conversations with ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer. The recordings, made while Zwonitzer was helping Biden write his memoir “Promise Me, Dad,” were obtained by Hur as part of his investigation into Biden’s handling of classified documents.
The Oversight Project, a conservative government accountability organization affiliated with the Heritage Foundation, is suing for the release of the ghostwriter tapes. In a statement sent to The Daily Wire, the group celebrated the win, stressing that the “American people deserve to know who was really running the White House” during the Biden years.
Last year, the Oversight Project secured the release of separate audio of Biden’s interview with Hur, which revealed Biden’s shocking mental decline that the group said “gave rise to the ‘autopen presidency.'” The former president reportedly used an autopen to sign pardons and other official documents while in office, apparently due to this mental decline. Congressional Republicans and the Trump administration have launched investigations into Biden’s use of the autopen, which remain ongoing.
“What’s striking is how desperately Biden fought to keep these conversations sealed, knowing full well they’d reveal more about his capacity than the defenders of the Autopen Presidency wanted to admit,” Vice President of Litigation Jeff Clark said in a statement. “The claim that the tapes were private family diaries or heirlooms is risible. Biden made $8 million from the book advance. He eventually used the book to springboard to a new chapter in his political career — one that even his lesser 2017 level of senility should have prevented from ever getting off the ground.”
The recordings became a focal point after Hur cited them in his report to explain why he’d declined to prosecute Biden. In the report, Hur described Biden as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
“This isn’t just about memoirs; it’s about whether Americans deserve to know who’s really running things,” Clark added. “The tapes will speak for themselves. Strap in for August.”
Oversight Project President Mike Howell said in a statement that the “evidence is stacking up that the sin was corporate in that the Democrat establishment, media, and power brokers knew that Biden wasn’t capable of being president but they pushed him anyways in favor of an unconstitutional governing strategy of rule by commission via a mechanical autopen device.”
Unless Biden successfully obtains further relief from the courts before August 3, the recordings are expected to be released after the court’s temporary stay expires.
