The NFL suspended Las Vegas Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo for the first two games of the 2024 season over an alleged violation of the league’s drug rule.
Adam Schefter wrote Friday on X that Garoppolo “is being suspended two games for violating the NFL’s Performance Enhancing Substances Policy, league sources told ESPN.”
“The policy violation is related to him using a prescribed medication without having a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption, per sources,” Schefter’s post added.
Garoppolo — who signed a 3-year contract with the Raiders in 2023 — will reportedly not appeal the decision, ESPN reported.

A short time later, Schefter wrote on X that the “Raiders are expected to release Jimmy Garoppolo before the fifth day of the new league year in mid-March, when he would earn an $11.25 million roster bonus, per sources.”
The suspension from the first two games of the 2024 regular season will apply to Garoppolo regardless of whether he’s with the Raiders or not, ESPN noted.
Garoppolo signed on with the Raiders when it was being led by then-head coach Josh McDaniels and GM Dave Ziegler. McDaniels and Ziegler were let go mid-season and linebacker coach Antonio Pierce was made interim head coach.
In January, the Raiders announced that Pierce would be their full-time head coach with Tom Telesco taking over as general manager. With new leadership in Vegas there’s reportedly no commitment to keeping Garoppolo, ESPN noted.

The two remaining quarterbacks on the Raiders roster are Aidan O’Connell and veteran Brian Hoyer, but the Raiders are expected to draft a quarterback, with some expecting the Las Vegas team to trade up from its 13th spot they currently hold in order to get a high-end QB.
Garoppolo previously played for the New England Patriots as well as the San Francisco 49ers. His best year with San Francisco was the 2019-2020 season when he helped take the team to Super Bowl LIV against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs ended up beating the 49ers in the Super Bowl 31-20. Garoppolo took the team back to the playoffs and led the team to an NFC Championship in 2021. He signed on as a free agent in 2023 with the Raiders, where he finished the 2023 season with a passer rating of 77.7 with 1,205 yards, 7 touchdowns and 9 interceptions in 7 games.
