Public Votes To Name Ship ‘Boaty McBoatFace.’ Will The Dream Come True?

Back in March, Britain’s Natural Environment Research Council asked the public for help in naming their new $290 million dollar polar research vessel. After the votes were tallied, “Boaty McBoatface” won with 124,109 votes, which was more than three times its closest contender’s total.

Deciding instead to name the Royal Research Ship (RRS) after famed veteran BBC naturalist Sir David Attenborough, the NERC said they would still use the public’s top pick, but on the ship’s remotely-operated undersea vehicle, whose job is to collect samples from the deep waters of the Arctic and Antarctic.
