A dress that was worn by Princess Diana set a new world auction record last weekend when it sold for more than $1.1 million.

The black and blue Jacques Azagury ballerina-length evening dress with a matching illustration recently went for $1,148,000 at Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies “Hollywood Legends” event, Fox News reported. The sale set a new auction record as the most expensive Princess Diana dress ever sold. Princess Diana wore the garment in Florence, Italy, in 1985.

A description of the gown said it is “adorned with padded shoulder pads features a black velvet bodice with embroidered stars in metallic thread made from Jakob Schlaepfer fabric with a two-tier royal blue organza skirt with a sash and bow.”

“Diana would wear numerous dresses and gowns by Azagury, one of her [favorites] was an ice blue silk georgette minidress worn 3 June 1997 to Royal Albert Hall for a performance of Swan Lake,” it added, the Guardian noted.

The evening gown sold for 11 times its estimated price of $100,000. It beat the previous record held for an auctioned Princess Diana gown, a 1991 black velvet gown by Victor Edelstein, which sold in January for $604,800, Fox News noted.

The Moroccan-British fashion designer Jacques Azaguary spoke to People magazine about the late royal.

“I think she would be so happy because fashion was a big part of her life,” the recently retired designer told the outlet. “That might sound flippant, but she loved getting ready for an occasion, she loved stepping out and being seen by all these people; not disappointing anyone, that was very important to her.”

“I was really excited and quite emotional actually as this was the first dress I ever made for her,” he added. “I’m just so happy that it’s still loved so much.”

A pink chiffon David and Elizabeth Emanuels blouse at the same auction sold for $381,000, nearly four times its original estimation of $80,000, Fox News noted. The late Princess wore the blush-pink top during her royal engagement photo shoot with then-Prince Charles that was featured in Vogue’s 1981 issue.
