In the critical Senate race in Pennsylvania, where staunch pro-life GOP candidate Pat Toomey and pro-abortion Democrat Katie McGinty are running neck and neck, Planned Parenthood just spent $1.3 million on an ad attacking Toomey’s pro-life comments in 2009.
Interviewed by MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, Toomey had said, “I would support legislation in Pennsylvania that would ban abortion. And I would suggest that we have penalties for doctors who perform them.” As LifeNews reports, “When Matthews pressed him on the issue, Toomey said the penalties for abortionists could include jail. The ad claims that Toomey wants to ‘throw doctors in jail,’ which would be ‘dangerous’ for Pennsylvania women and families.”
Planned Parenthood’s $1.3 million buy is comprised of $1.1 million for running the ad on television and $200,000 in web ads. Planned Parenthood Votes executive director Deirdre Schifeling has said, “Pat Toomey is like a termite –– you don’t realize that he’s busy eroding all your rights until your entire house falls down.”
Toomey has a 100-percent pro-life voting record. His campaign pointed out, “Pat Toomey’s record on abortion is the same as a majority of elected Pennsylvanians in Congress and the state legislature, while Katie McGinty’s view is so extreme that she would have taxpayers paying for any abortion for any reason during any time of pregnancy.” Maria Gallagher, Legislative/PAC Director for the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation, echoed to LifeNews that Toomey is “securely in the mainstream” of Pennsylvanians, adding, “Senator Toomey has been a strong and eloquent voice in the U.S. Senate. Katie McGinty would be a mouthpiece for the abortion industry if elected this year.”
McGinty champions dismemberment abortion, in which an unborn baby is ripped limb by limb from the mother’s womb. She opposed H.B. 1948, which would have banned the infamous practice, saying, “We need allies who will stand up against attempts to interfere with women’s access to health care, and guarantee that we have a full court that will recognize the constitutional rights affirmed in Roe v. Wade.”

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the pro-abortion group Emily’s List has donated over $3 million through its affiliated Women Vote! Super PAC to support McGinty, and Planned Parenthood has spent another $300,000 attacking Toomey.
