UNITED STATES - JULY 24: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., tells a story about trying to call Rob Reiner, during a news conference to call for the extension of the federal unemployment insurance in the Capitol Visitor Center to on Friday, July 24, 2020. Reps. Danny Davis, D-Ill., right, and Dan Kildee, D-Mich., also appear. Pelosi dialed the wrong number when trying to call Reiner to offer condolences for his late father, Carl.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) said during an interview with USA Today this week that she would have been able to hold her own had she been forced to face off with the rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6.

“Well, I’m pretty tough. I’m a street fighter,” Pelosi said when she was asked whether she was frightened by the ordeal. “They would have had a battle on their hands.”

Pelosi reportedly then lifted her foot, showing her 4-inch-high stilettos, which she said she “would have” used as weapons to fight off the rioters.

“I was never personally afraid because I had so much security for myself,” she said. “I was afraid for everybody else, and I’ll never forgive them the trauma that they caused to the staff and the members.”

Pelosi said Congress’ goal is to find out “the truth” about the events that unfolded that day and that she wants to have a commission do the investigation.

Pelosi was in the news earlier this week over a biography that is coming out on her next week in which she reportedly mocks far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

Axios highlighted details from the book:

  • Pelosi unloads on the Squad, at one point adopting a child-like voice when discussing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and offers the Squad this blunt advice: “You’re not a one-person show. This is the Congress of the United States.”
  • Pelosi scoffs at President Obama for not being able to deliver his home state votes for Obamacare — “Why are we having a problem with Illinois?” — and bristles at Obama getting sole credit for the deals she got through Congress.
  • The speaker said she learned the art of politics from her father, Baltimore Mayor Thomas D’Alesandro: “What I learned from my father was everything … I breathed it in … Politics is every minute of every day. It is part of you.”

Earlier this year, Pelosi backed an effort by House Democrats to challenge the election victory of Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA), an effort that they ultimately decided against.

Pelosi’s majority in the House has shrunk down to just six seats, 218 to 212, now that new-Rep. Julia Letlow (R-LA) was sworn into office this week. Pelosi lost a member last week when Alcee Hastings (D-FL) passed away after his battle with cancer.

“Letlow won a crowded GOP primary on March 20 to fill the vacancy left by her late husband and secured an endorsement from former President Trump, who won the solidly GOP district handily,” The Hill reported. “Multiple other House seats still remain vacant. Former Rep. Ron Wright (R-Texas) died of COVID-19 complications in February, while former Democratic Reps. Deb Haaland (N.M.), Marcia Fudge (Ohio) and Cedric Richmond (La.) resigned to take roles in the Biden administration. All of those vacancies, as well as the one left by Hastings, aren’t expected to be filled by special elections for months.”
